On the ocean, Oyster Bay is a tidal bay with great access to fishing, protected from the ocean waves. Nice for swimming at high tide. Low tide allows for exploring the harbour floor.

Charming and Peaceful Sunshine Coast Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Walter's Oyster Bay cottage was ideal for our nature-loving family of three (my husband and myself, our almost 12-year-old, and our Scottie dog). Having only been to the Sunshine Coast as a child, I did not really know the area so just went by what I'd read online and what I could see on Google Maps.

The location was perfect. We enjoyed the bay both at low tide (exploring critters in the mud and streams) and high tide, when we took the canoe out to explore the bay and surroundings. Swimming in neighbouring Ruby Lake, with its warm clear waters, and snorkeling at Smuggler's Cove and Baker's Beach (both also nearby) were also definite highlights.

The cottage itself is simply but thoughtfully apportioned, with everything we needed for a comfortable stay (the large sized washer and dryer were especially handy). Internet access was very good and fast, which normally wouldn't be so critical except that my husband had to work during our stay. Another unexpected bonus was the abundance of wild blackberries on the property – we so enjoyed being able to pick and enjoy them!

Walter was an excellent host, responding to SMS queries promptly and checking in to see if we had everything we needed.

I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Lovely cosy and calm getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the cottage. The house was clean and simple. The views were stunning and so lovely to have the water just there.

We brought our kayaks and paddle boards and used them pretty much every day. You have to keep and eye on the tide though as when it's out it is FAR out and even at high tide the bay is very shallow. My husband tried the canoe from the house and he loved it.

There are blackberry bushes surrounding the property and we picked kilos and kilos. I ended up making jam as we had so many and even though they were delicious, there is only so much you can eat.

The house was super comfortable and cozy. Our teens loved having the bunk house to themselves away from the grown ups . There was a DVD player in the bunk house too which made them very happy and we were happy to have the house to ourselves without listening to movies.

The house is a 5 min drive to the grocery store so that was perfect ( you can use the marina garbage and recycling depot for a $2-$5 upon the peir btw as we didn't know where to do that).

The house is so calm and has a great feel to it. Sitting on the deck watching the eagles, playing games outside or listening to the wind chimes while reading. It was just what we needed.

We drove all over the Sunshine Coast , hiked a fair bit, took the ferry to Lund, and the house is in a perfect place to see it all.

Thank you Walter for a lovely place to stay :)

Immaculate clean cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

From the moment you walk in you feel at home. This cozy cottage makes great use of every square inch of space. It is decoracted with modern Ikea furniture in the main cottage and the adorable bunkie. It is a great location to see all of the Sunshine Coast due to its central location. We enjoyed taking the canoe out on Oyster Bay, picking wild blackberries, and taking pictures of the deer that visited the yard. It is enjoyable to sit out on the elevated balcony to take in the smell of the pines and look over the bay. The only thing that I would add, is a small table to be able to enjoy meals on the deck.

Our host was easy to communicate with and ensured that we got into the cabin and that all was well. I would highly recommend this cabin for a couple, or a family up to 4 with older children as 2 would most likely have to sleep in the bunkie.

Because the cottage is located right off the highway there is some road noise during the day, but the traffic comes to a stand still in the evening so we never were bothered by traffic at night.

We enjoyed eating at the Lighthouse Pub in Shechelt and the Grasshopper pub closeby.

We would like to thank Walter for sharing his cottage with us. We are glad we choose to stay there and will be back!

See you next year,

Cathy and Brian

Great place, awesome host

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this cottage and while ocean swimming out front is silty, as you can imagine, it's the ocean, there are tonnes of places to swim (fresh water) and things to do within minutes of the cottage (I suggest Ruby Lake which is only a 10 minute drive and breathtakingly pristine and beautiful). Walter takes great care to make sure his guests have everything to make their vacation wonderful, we even arrived to a complimentary bottle of wine (Apothic at that!) You can tell he really cares about his guests. The cabin is cozy and well appointed and you just can't get any better than the location. Thanks!

A cute and comfortable cottage on a beautiful bay

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is clearly very old, but well maintained, with a nice interior, hardwood floors, nice furnishings, good bathroom, kitchen. The exterior has been recently painted and is super cute.

The best part is the beautiful bay and the gorgeous views. The yard is nice, the deck is great to hang out on, but it really is all about the location.

I drove 5 minutes to the center of Madeira Park to go to the IGA grocery and the liquor store, there is a cool BBB food trailer across the parking lot with great burgers. Also a great Japanese restaurant with really nice sushi is really close.

We went on a awesome hike to Skookumchuck, it is about 15 minutes from the cottage and unbelievably beautiful. You hike through old growth forest, past a beautiful lake, then come to a really cool experience, you must check it out!

We went to the beach at Sechelt and the kids loved it.

The funky thing about the cottage is the "bunky". It is a separate little cabin about 10 feet away that contains the second bedroom. It is nice, with the same look, floors, etc. with 2 beds and no bathroom. So it is private, but to get to the bathroom you have to go about 6 steps outside and into the main cabin.

The washing machine and dryer is under the cottage in the basement, along with storage space for the folding chairs, life jackets, and other stuff.

The BBQ grill is outside at the front of the cabin and it is ok but kind of old.

We used the kitchen a lot, it had everything we needed to cook, dishes were ok, wine glasses and all. We found the coffee is stored in the freezer, and there is drinking water in the refrigerator.

Getting to the cottage is easy, we came on the ferry from Horseshoe bay to Gibsons, drive up the Sunshine Coast Hwy about 65 KM, the directions are clear.

There is a book that the owner provides that lists everything to do on the Coast, hiking, biking, diving, fishing, golf, and the restaurants, it was great to find out where to go.

Internet is great, TV and cable are good, the DVD only had a couple of disks, but we didn't watch TV much.

It is a great Cottage and we will definitely be coming back.

PS, this is my biased review, and although it is real, I must let you know that I am the owner
