4 Beds, Living Room and formal Dining Room
I am a lover of old houses and moved from Edinburgh City Centre when I fell in love with what was then a very dilapidated house with a lot of potential. Having spent all my spare time (and money) on the house for 5 years, I got a job in Italy and had to leave it behind in 2010. Not being able to part with it, I decided on holiday rentals. I have since returned to the West coast of Scotland and now enjoy regular holidays in the house myself. Since 2013 I returned to the UK, but now I live in London. I still try to get back to Portobello as much as possible, which isn't often enough.
Owner purchased this House in 2005
Why Owner chose Portobello
It's a real home. Many guests have commented on that. This could be because of all the dedication and love that went into its restoration! It's bursting with character and many original features have been retained or reinstated, along side modern twists with lighting and art.
What makes this House unique
It's difficult to say what in particular I fell in love with when I first saw the house. It may have been the stairs and the light. There was a lovely feel to the place. The first floor living room with 3 big windows and original fireplace is a favourite, as is the wee room at the top with a view across the water to Fife.. Or the big bedroom at the top with a view to Arthur's Seat.

Comfortable homely walking distance to beachfront
Parking a bit cumbersome
Out family of 7 could have not asked for a better or more lovely place to stay while in Scotland. It is exactly as pictured. The stairs can be somewhat challenging for us older folks, but nothing that I couldn't handle. Patrick was very prompt answering any questions we had.
The house was well appointed - bathrooms were large and up to date. Go out the front door, turn left, go to end of block, turn left and the beautiful beach is straight ahead. Great restaurants and grocer within 3 blocks.
Beautiful courtyard in back where we gathered each night. Don't sit on the snails!
Patrick: we fed a very persistent multi-colored cat that wanted in the house. I hope that was okay.
Thanks for allowing us the use of your house. Portobello rocks!
Easy bus in to Edinburgh.
Big thanks to Patrick (owner) and Roslyn. Accommodation did not disappoint. Enjoyed walking the beach and "Porty high street". Parking was a challenge but we were forewarned. Bus to city center was excellent. Highly recommend.
Loved the house with all its original artwork & fabulous shower. Loads of places to eat & drink within walking distance. The only thing that people might like to know if they’re taking an elderly relative, as we were, is that the toilets are all up or down a few stairs from the bedrooms apart from the en-suite!
This was a great holiday for a three-generation family group. Patrick's house is lovely. The communal rooms (dining & sitting) are comfortable but a bit scruffy - perfect when our group included a toddler and a terrier. The bedrooms are clean and freshly decorated. The beds are very comfortable. Two really decent showers and an amazing bath meant there was no queueing or conflict when we were getting ready to go out. The stairs are good exercise! The situation is perfect - halfway between the high street and the beach.
Portabello is a little gem - the beach an endless stretch of sand with a pub, cafe, ice cream stall and two children's play areas. The high street is full of great food and drink outlets - particularly the Twelve Triangles bakery, the Beer Zoo bottle store, Anna Thai and St Andrews fish and chips.
We relaxed so much that by the end of the week we felt we lived here.
Thank you for the lovely review. I am laughing at the scruffy part, I've just been doing some decorating in the Dining Room today, but still haven't been able bring myself to replace the scruffy sofa in the Living Room that I'm very attached to and no one has to worry about. I'll need to improve that and some other things soon though, but make sure the house remains suitably homely in the process!
Glad you enjoyed your stay and I agree Porty is a gem!
Comfortable, spacious and well equipped house
We stayed with family over the Christmas holiday, the house was clean and the kitchen well equipped. We cooked our Xmas dinner here. The house was about a minutes walk to Portabello beach and a twenty minute drive to the centre of Edinburgh. Spent a few evenings in the Espy pub on the beach front. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Portobello is a charming and distinctive part of Edinburgh with a busy, traditional high street offering fishmongers, delicatessen, fine wine shop, award winning butcher plus various restaurants and takeaways - everything you need for a self-catering holiday! There is a wide variety of interesting architecture within the conservation area and a stroll through the local streets never fails to reveal something of interest.
The sandy beach, which is approximately 2 minutes walk from the house, boasts beautiful coastal views, good pub/restaurants and cafes, boats and canoes for hire, restored Victorian swimming pool with Turkish baths and gym, soft play area, outdoor playgrounds plus additional seasonal art installations and attractions. Portobello is very well connected to Edinburgh city centre with several regular bus routes operating day and night on the 3 mile journey between the two locations and a taxi ride.
This traditional seaside resort, with a vibrant community spirit, is a fantastic location offering peace and calm from which to explore the city of Edinburgh as well as the surrounding countryside and attractions.
