Overpriced and Poor Excuse for a Rental
Our stay at this property started with opening a door to what smelled like urine and the air conditioner off in 80+ degree weather. As we had an infant with us, this made things that very uncomfortable in temperature and questioning the cleanliness of the cottage. We found bugs, cobwebs and a lack of items to be able to use this as a getaway such as cooking pans, utensils and actual cabinets that opened, if they even had doors on them. The Dutch oven was scraped and peeling so that it was a questionable item to use. We never got the internet that was advertised, having complained about it to VRBO. There was a section of the porch where the screen was not attached alongside a wasp nest with ant hills on the second-level porch. There were no dressers for clothes, which is fine but there were also no hangers in any closets to hang clothes. When using the dish washer, the underside of the countertop seemed to dissolve into the dishwasher! UGH! The master bath had the showerhead unsecured, coming from an open hole, while the area to the left of the shower (access area?) appeared that someone tried to secure it through a combination of paint and screws, that when the door to the bedroom opened, the panel came loose. The owner, due to our complaints upon our arrival, did come by but shrugged off bugs as being normal around the beach and wiped the floor saying there were was no sand in response to lack of cleanliness, missing the cobwebs in ceiling corners, the peeling paint on the ceilings and sliding doors that clearly needed cleaning. To his defense, he did bring a new grill, but never tested it, only for us to find out that only half of the grill was functional for grilling. There were holes at the entrance door and other doorways where both light and bugs had unimpeded access and holes in the building's outer "shell" left us feeling less than protected from unwanted creatures. Having stayed in OBX over the years, we did not expect to be left with a welcoming mat, but having simple instructions where we knew that trash pickup was the day we were leaving would have allowed us to assist in disposing of our trash, instead leaving it for someone else to push to the curb. This is the only place that we have stayed in OBX that did not have trash instructions! A hotel would have been cheaper, as we wound up buying the things we needed to make the stay reasonable and then brought them home. We have pictures to support the review. Don't rent!
Honest is a virtue this guest is unfortunately lacking, as true motivation was the desire to not pay for 3 day rental, although guest declined offer to vacate property for a full refund, rather, deciding to complete their stay.
Guest complained to VRBO very early the first morning, and owner came to house right away to address concerns, only to find most of the complatints they shared with VRBO were completely false. Grill was missing (apparently stolen from under house), so we purchased a new one and delivered to house that same morning. Internet was temporarily down, and we contacted provider to learn they were having a network issue beyond our control which was fixed within the day. We never heard another complaint for the rest of their stay, and inspected the property immediately following stay, only to find that issues reported in review were almost all completely fabricated or exagerated. I suspect they didn't realize that owner is a local, and would be able to quickly respond to their false complaints.
Nice house within walking distance of the beach.
Enjoyed the home and the easy walk to the beach just two blocks away. We used the beach chairs and umbrella. Relaxing neighborhood and screened deck - we could hear the ocean. Nicely decorated. Wish there was a washer & dryer.
