About the property

Historic Algiers Point Grand home custom built in 1910 on Oak Lined Avenue!

Our historic home is a 2600 sq ft classic New Orleans home built in 1910. Enjoy your visit with plenty of space and comfort in our 3 bedrooms, 2 bath, kitchen, living room, dining room and office/sun room. You will have access to our tropical backyard with a garden table, pond and cypress swing!

Algiers Point is New Orleans' hidden gem! NOLA's 2nd oldest neighborhood is a quaint village of historic homes and locally owned businesses. Only steps away from the Algiers-Canal St. Ferry, French Quarter, and Downtown Central Business District area! The neighborhood is a safe, quiet retreat that allows guests to be able to walk to all the action that New Orleans has to offer! Algiers Point was voted New Orleans neighborhood of the year in both 2015 and 2016!

The home is located on the entire second floor of a 110+ year old home that has been the residence of some of Algiers Points' most renowned and respected families. The entire structure was renovated between 2010-2015, with a focus on keeping all of the original architectural features!

Our home is great for families, couples, or friends who are looking for a home away from home. Since our home shares the historic building with two first floor apartments, we do ask that you respect your neighbors. New Orleans has plenty of spots to party and get wild, we are offering you a cozy, historic home to relax and get some rest from all that fun! You'll love the historic neighborhood & close proximity to the French Quarter. It's about a 10 min walk to the ferry, which whisks you away across the Mississippi River in about 5 mins, it runs every 15 mins from each side and if you get tired of walking, a Uber or Lyft is around $10.

Our neighborhood also has a number of local bars and restaurants if you feel like staying close to home one night. Algiers Point is also one of the safest neighborhoods in New Orleans, ask us for more details or links if you like. Usually the Mom's with Strollers walking down the Oak lined streets give it away, but we are happy to forward documentation.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions. We provide all the basic necessities to ensure a peaceful & comfortable stay!

About Russell Blanchard

Russell is a 9th generation Louisianan who traces his Acadian roots in Louisiana back to his Cajun ancestor Benony Blanchard landing in Algiers Point in 1785. He is a licensed New Orleans tour guide, so he knows the city well & is eager to provide recommendations in and around New Orleans. Penelope has lived in Louisiana her whole life, starting in Lake Charles, then moving to Baton Rouge to attend LSU and she has made New Orleans her home for the last 5 years! We love New Orleans and want to make sure our guests have a great time! We currently split time between New Orleans and Los Angeles.

If we are in town and not staying in the main home, we might be in one of the downstairs apartments and we are happy to assist our guests with recommendations on activities, restaurants or just share a cocktail on the porch or in the tropical garden!

Russell Blanchard purchased this house in 2010

Why Russell Blanchard chose McDonough

My journey to Algiers Point began in 2010. I was invited to Algiers Riverfest, an annual festival by the ferry terminal. I was browsing the internet that morning and saw a few properties for sale. Since I hadn't explored that area of the city properly, I headed over a bit early to seek out these homes and get a feel for the area. Living Uptown at the time, I decided to make a day of it and take public transit. I walked out my door on St. Charles Ave and hopped on the Historic St. Charles Streetcar, which I took to Canal Street. I transferred to the Red Canal Streetcar down to the foot of Canal to the Canal St.-Algiers Ferry Terminal. I fell in love with the short relaxing ride across the river on the ferry. Once I walked off the ferry and began to seek out the homes on my list, I immediately fell in love with the quiet, beautiful neighborhood. The unique architecture and vibrant colors on every home really stood out to me as I walked the quiet streets. I had traveled back in time. Upon seeing the home and large white columns at 811 Opelousas, despite a bit of dirt and wear, I could tell that she had once been the grandest home on the block. After a great day with family by the river listening to some of New Orleans' best musicians I felt this neighborhood could be my home. After a up and down six month process, I was now the proud owner of the grand home on Opelousas that I found that first morning. We immediately went to work renovating the two downstairs apartments and replaced both bathrooms upstairs completely. The rest of the main home was still in good shape, so I embarked on a careful process of fixing the cracked plaster walls and slowly renovating the home room by room. I am proud to say that the process is complete. I travel a bit for work these days and am happy to open our doors and share our home with visitors to the city we love. (Since my ancestor landed in 1785, I joke that it's taken us 200+ years to travel 5 blocks!)

What makes this house unique

We love Algiers Point because it gives you a small town feel in a big city. We know all our neighbors and every business is locally owned and operated, no franchises or chains!

Algiers Point offers a rich mix of history, architecture and small town charm only minutes away from the world famous French Quarter. Enjoy a short walk to the ferry past historic creole cottages, shotgun doubles and majestic Victorians and take in the best view of the city from the Mississippi river levee.

The Point is home to locally owned and operated restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and a blown glass studio, all located in buildings dating back over one hundred years. Algiers Point takes its name from nautical maps that identify the bend in the river as it curves around the neighborhood. Algiers Point was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and designated a local historic district in 1994.

A few or our neighborhood favorites (all less than a 10 minute walk from the apartment):

-Crown & Anchor English Pub (traditional English pub)

-Tout de Suite Cafe (breakfast/brunch/lunch)

-Tavolino Pizza & Lounge (pizza, small plates, cheeses, wine & cocktails)

-Congregation Coffee Roasters (coffee & snacks)

-Old Point Bar (live music)

-John's Seafood (Locally caught shrimp, crabs, crawfish, best Po-Boys around, trust me, I know!)

-Appetite Repair Shop (great take out food)

We loved the house and hospitality!

  • 5 of 5

We had spent several nights in the city then finished our vacation in this lovely home. We enjoyed the porch every evening. People would walk by and say hello. A great neighborhood. The ferry was just a short walk away and a couple good restaurants. Johns seafood was awesome. Fresh crawfish was excellent.

The house was cozy and roomy. The kitchen was stocked with everything you might need. The beds were comfy and most of all it was relaxing. It was the perfect way to finish our visit to NOLA. Thank you for making our stay feel like home!!

A Perfect Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

Russell could not have been more welcoming, from a note "hello" to a binder with ideas, shampoo, conditioner, all the amenities of your own home. Whenever I needed to reach Russell, he promptly responded, for assistance and suggestions. The area of Algiers Point was lovely, a perfect way to truly experience the "feel" of New Orleans. The area was very walkable - we did not rent a car. We walked 10 minutes to the ferry that took us across the Mississippi directly to the French Quarter. We booked several excursions that we connected with by riding the ferry to meet up. We could not have had a more gracious host for our first trip to New Orleans. Thank you, Russell and Penelope.
