Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

According to the Los Angeles Times travel section, Tanglewood House is the "perfect location for seeing the Wine Country of Sonoma/Napa." They also praised our "spacious guest suite, gourmet breakfasts, and beautiful garden setting."

Tanglewood House is a serene, romantic retreat in a secluded, park-like setting one mile from the historic village of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County. Located on a quiet country road and surrounded by over an acre of beautiful gardens, our Bed and Breakfast (B&B) is an ideal destination for couples who desire luxurious accommodations, complete privacy, and gracious hospitality when they visit the Sonoma Valley.

As our only guests, you will reside in one of the most spacious and elegantly appointed private suites in the Wine Country. Your sitting room is decorated with numerous works of art and features a fireplace, cathedral ceilings, satellite TV, wireless internet and refrigerator. Your adjoining bedroom overlooks a private patio and is furnished with country pine antiques and a queen-size bed, and the tub and shower in your bathroom are tiled in Italian marble. Your suite also has its own driveway and separate entrance.

In the morning, we serve gourmet breakfasts in your sitting room - fresh fruit and just-squeezed orange juice, French roast coffee, croissants, homemade bread, and entrees such as cheese and mushroom omelets with Canadian bacon, blueberry pancakes, or home fries with sausages. After breakfast, take a moment or two to stroll through our gardens as you prepare for a day of sightseeing. Nearby there are over a dozen fine wineries and Jack London State Park with its hiking trails, picnic areas, and horse rentals. The city of Sonoma, a short seven mile drive from Tanglewood House, is noted for its plaza, fine shops, and acclaimed restaurants.

It takes half-an-hour to drive to Napa Valley, fifty-five minutes to San Francisco, and an hour to the Pacific Coast. In the afternoon when you return to Tanglewood House, unwind by reading a book while you sunbathe by the pool, sip a glass of wine in the gazebo, or play a game of croquet on the lawn. We look forward to hosting your next visit to the Valley of the Moon.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Tanglewood House has to be one of our favorite places of all time. There is a certain magical quality to the place and the minute we step on the property we completely let go of our anxieties and enter into a calm, tranquil, beautiful setting that truly ministers to us deeply. We consider Tanglewood House our retreat center, our home away from home.

Tanglewood House? We're moving in.

  • 5 of 5

More like "Please adopt two grown-ass adults right now because we don't want to leave-House." No, but really, if you are reading this now, you are too late - we already moved in.

Ok, ok, fine, I'll be serious. We came for a wedding, and ended up being a bit late to each of the various ceremonies because we didn't want to leave this beautiful home nestled in the quiet Glen Ellen neighborhood. John and Mary are the most gracious hosts you could ever hope for. They keep Tanglewood House immaculately clean and well stocked with all the amenities and "creature comforts" you could possibly need. You want San Pellegrino but forgot to include it in your picnic groceries? They have that - and many other snacks in the in-unit fridge. Side note: They've got a bunch of wineries on a list that they have free "wine tastings for two" at.

Let's talk food. Mary is a magician in the kitchen. I honestly don't want to ruin the surprise with details because it is such a delight to wake up in the morning to a perfectly set table with coffee, tea, juice, fruit and amazing food. Btw, they ask you about allergies/preferences and then dream up the meals.

Circling back to the spot itself. The bathroom is updated and shower quiet nice. The bed is comfy. The sitting room is well lit and quiet. The pool is fantastic - perfect for layout out next to and taking a dip pre/post wine tasting in the heat.

If you are looking for a quiet spot, tasty breakfasts, privacy, pool and an amazing location minutes away from wineries...look no further. We'll be recommending this to all of our friends.

This was our second time visiting Tanglewood and were delighted to be back. John and Mary are the perfect hosts. The breakfast Mary prepares is exceptionally. Very conveniently located to wonderful restaurants and wineries. We will definitely return on our next visit.

Beautiful Glen Ellen Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

I have to be honest that I usually do not take the time to write reviews often. I know I have good opinions, but I often do not take have the time once I return from vacation to write a review. With that being said, I absolutely did not want to miss an opportunity to share my experience at the Tanglewood House. This home is absolutely beautiful! As you approach the home off the main road, you immediately realize that this will be a unique experience in wine country. There is a private drive and walkway through the native landscape that leads to the to French doors that make up the entrance to the guest quarters. The house is shaped like a large "L" with the guest quarters being positioned on the shorter side. The guest quarters have a spacious sitting room that is perfect for enjoying a book, or just looking out the floor to ceiling windows at the birds. The sleeping area has a queen sized bed. My wife complains that I often "roam" in my sleep, so a king bed would be nice, but overall the room was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom has one sink and a regular sized tub and shower combo, but offered more than enough room for my wife and I who are used to having a large bathroom. The grounds of the property is where you will really start to see the benefits of this property. Throughout the incredibly secluded grounds you will find everything from a gazebo, a pair of hammocks to relax in, and numerous outdoor sitting areas to enjoy. Our favorite area to enjoy was the pool area. What an incredible place to relax after wine tasting! Each day after visiting a few wineries, my wife and I relax by the pool with a glass of wine and just enjoy each other's company. The pool offered enough room to swim a few laps before dinner, dive head first into the deep end or just sit on the side and enjoy the northern Californian weather.

I must say that the one thing that makes this property a "can't miss" is the homeowners. I will be upfront that my wife and I are not accustom to staying at bed and breakfasts. We usually want to rent our own home and have the complete property to ourselves, so this aspect actually caused a moment of hesitation for us. WOW! The owners, John and Mary, were absolutely incredible people! Each morning Mary would make the most fantastic breakfast that would appease even the most critical culinary patrons. My wife and I love great food and each morning we were given an adventure of tastes to enjoy!

Do not miss!!

The perfect place to rest, relax and enjoy the Sonoma Valley Wine Country

  • 5 of 5

Hosts Mary & John Field clearly love what they do. The gardens and grounds are absolutely beautiful, and alive with the sound of the wind in the trees and birds nesting in their slice of paradise in Glen Ellen. And while alive with the sounds of nature, it is amazingly quiet and peaceful. So if you love being somewhat secluded and surrounded by nature, while relaxing in close proximity to excellent restaurants and wineries, I challenge you to find a better place. My husband and I could have stayed for another 5 days just floating in the heated pool, watching the birds, enjoying Mary and John's hospitality, and also that of their sweet Collie - Brooklyn. If you've been stressed out and are running on empty, this is the place to recharge your heart, mind, body and soul. It's also a very romantic little hide-away where your privacy is respected and your needs accommodated. Book it! You won't be disappointed, unless you prefer over-priced luxury hotels and the sounds of the guests on either side of your hotel room.
