About Betty Meischen
Betty Smith Meischen is a native of Austin County, Texas growing up in Bellville and graduating from Bellville High School. She graduated from UT Austin and married a USAF pilot. She is an author who has written 7 books, mostly about Texas history. She is a 7th generation Texan and member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. 13 of her ancestors came to Texas during the Colonial period. Her 2nd great grandmother Rebecca Bell Cloyd was born in Austin County, Texas (then Mexico) in 1832. Several other ancestors came to Texas between 1822-34. One of them was a Texas Ranger and others fought for Texas Independence at San Jacinto. Betty is also a Realtor and had looked for a place like Trails West Retreat for many years. When she and husband Del found it with its rugged wilderness and natural waterfall, they knew that this was the place God intended them to move to. After our first little cabin was put in, others asked us if we would be willing to lease it and so Trails West Retreat grew from that point. Everything that exists on this 15 acres was planned and put in by Betty and the cabins, the Cottage, the Pavilion, the roads, septic systems, wells and our home. Betty designed every structure.
Betty Meischen purchased this Cabin in 2004
Why Betty Meischen chose Burton
The beauty speaks for itself. Very dramatic elevation changes, a gorgeous small creek with bridges across and an observation deck to view the natural waterfall. Tall trees and many walking trails as well as gardens and landscaping. The property is located in the historic Winedale early German settlement whose occupants had side occupations of winemakers. Del's immigrant ancestor Friedrich Meischen is buried in a nearby cemetery in Shelby. He came to America in 1867 and the Meischen family settled in the northwestern part of Austin County.
What makes this Cabin unique
Gorgeous bluebonnets and wildflowers in the spring. You can get back to nature hear, see the stars at night, view wildlife and birds (we have a resident red hawk). The serenity is possibly TWR's biggest asset. You do not hear ambulance sirens, trains or 18 wheelers here. But you might hear coyotes or an owl at night. We have had chaplains come to stay here for a contemplative sanctuary as well as many church retreats. It is a family place too. We have a playscape for the kids and horseshoes and bean bag toss, throw your frisbees or baseballs and a basketball hoop. We have had many family reunions here with our 4 cabins, a cottage and the covered Pavilion with its rock fireplace, kitchen and men's and women's bathrooms. It is a budget friendly place and we are always willing to work with our guests on pricing. Although our address is Burton, we are closest to the unique town of Round Top.

Great place for simple living in a great location!
Enjoyed our stay. Had a wonderful atmosphere in the middle of the woods with a great porch. Quiet and private. Easy access within minutes to the Red Barn and other sales. Does not have a stove. Victoria
Quaint setting and close to Round Top
No internet service in cabin, had to go outside up hill to get service. Cabin very dated.
We are sorry you were not happy with your accommodations. Normally we get 5 star reviews. The cabins are rustic and in a woodsy setting. They are not meant to be a 5 star hotel. We are very close to Round Top where most accommodations are running $250 per night. Not exactly sure by what you mean dated. Cabin has flat screen TV, microwave, coffee maker, full refrigerator. We decorate with antiques so yes they do look older. The WIFI--we just put in a costly transmitter and pay quite a bit extra to get service to the cabins. Sometimes the initial connection requires walking out a bit beyond the trees.
Peaceful! Cute & clean cabin.
Thank you for coming to our peaceful retreat in the woods. We are happy you enjoyed your stay.

Very nice place
Close to Round Top, but very quiet and scenic.
Thank you for staying with us. Enjoyed our visit as we sat on the porch of your cabin. It was a pleasure to visit with you and hope that you had a good experience in our cabin and the Round Top Antique show. Hopefully, you will return to visit us again.
A perfect rustic location for the Round Top vintage market
What a gem. My wife and I have stayed in various places around the Round Top area for the antique show but Del, Betty and most importantly Harley have won our hearts. They were most accomodating and made sure we felt welcomed. We had plenty of room for our box truck needed for our daily pick'n. The cabins are cozy and the whole property has a wonderful rustic camp feel. We so enjoyed the pavilion's kitchen, smoker and beautiful fireplace. This custom outdoor fireplace was the setting for great dinners, music, s'mores and even a little dancing under the stars. A truly peaceful place (within 5 miles of downtown Round Top) to unwind after a long day out at the fields. It is not the Four Season's if that is what you are looking for but it is a little slice of heaven that we look forward to visiting again next spring. Thanks Del, Betty & Harley!!
Thank you so much for your nice review. We try hard to be accommodating to our guests. Yes, we are not a hotel and we do not want to be. Nature and setting are very important to the experience. We are glad you got to take advantage of the Pavilion and fireplace. Thank you very much for choosing Trails West Retreat!

This was a beautiful place. We had coffee in the morning on the covered patio. The only hiccup was the AC. We were warm at night because we could not change the AC temperature. The controls were on the other side of the unit.
Round Top, Texas is the mecca of antique hunters! We are conveniently located 5 miles from many shops and restaurants. We are also only 1 mile from the Winedale Shakespeare Theatre and also 5 miles from the world class Festival Hill, a music venue with symphony orchestra and ballets. There are many wineries in our area and also we are halfway between two large lakes Fayetteville and Somerville. Round Top now has three antique festivals each year--January winter market, the huge spring show where there are 1000's of vendors and another big antique show in the fall.
