About Kathryn Belsher & John Nichols
John grew up in Toronto and spent his youth racing Sailboats, he relocated to Vancouver where he's been for many years since, I grew up in Calgary and spent my youth downhill skiing and riding horses, remaining a prairie girl my entire life until now. We met in Nelson, BC during the winter of 2014 where both of our sons were playing Junior hockey. John has one son who is 21, I have 3 sons who are 25, 21 and 20. When the boys are together our grocery bills quadruple! I moved to the island for work in the summer of 2016; John's job changed later that year, at which time he also became an Island resident. We were incredibly fortunate enough to find our dream home on the water in Maple Bay in early spring 2017, moving in a few months later. John currently works from home, his business is commercial industrial heating, ventilation, and air quality control equipment for BC's many mills. I have a background teaching yoga, as well as accounting. I gave up accounting work to follow a passion and dream in health and wellness, going back to school and studying Registered Massage Therapy. I'm now a BC RMT and work from home practicing my massage, also working in Duncan doing massage and teaching yoga. We love our island life, and pinch ourselves every day that we are fortunate enough to live in this magical place. We truly cherish the friends, neighbours and colleagues we've met who are all so friendly, open and eager to welcome us. We hope you find the same enchanting experience when you come to visit us at Seaside Casita Maple Bay.

This little casita is situated on a picturesque part of Maple Bay, directly on the water. We spent a large quantity of our time on the deck by the ocean, exploring amongst the rocks (purple sea stars and crabs galore!)
The Casita offered everything we needed, the bed was very comfortable and the space was spotless. We had easy access to everything, however I would recommend a car if you wish to explore other areas. (There is free parking at the Casita)
Kat & John (and pup Mimic) were friendly and hospitable but were also quick to give us privacy.
I would definitely stay here again! Thank you John & Kat for a great weekend stay!
A Great Getaway!
We had a great few days at the property. It is exactly as described and felt like home right away. The view from the suite is very peaceful and relaxing - just what we were looking for. John was a great host and made us feel very comfortable. There is a lot to do if you're so inclined - we did a couple nice hikes with terrific views, rode our bikes and used the kayaks that the hosts generously provide. Morning coffee and breakfast in the red chairs was also a highlight! Hope to return next year.
Lovely view and quiet accommodation that will consider your canine companion.
This place is actually a bit larger than it seems in the pictures. The bed is very comfortable. The towels are abundant and clean. The hosts are helpful. The location is fabulous. Lots of hiking and other attractions nearby, which are great if you can pull your eyes from the peaceful view.
Thx Stacey, enjoyed having you. Please visit again.
A beautiful oasis on the ocean
I started work in Duncan on short notice in March of 2018 and needed a furnished place to stay until I could get more permanent housing, and was I ever lucky to have stayed here for my first couple of months. Kathryn and John are incredibly kind and friendly people and the place is just gorgeous. Every day I woke up from that very comfortable bed to look out at that amazing view through those big windows. Just breathtaking and I miss it already.
The place itself is perfect for a couple or one person like myself (and I am a big guy at 6'2). I loved being able to turn on the little fireplace, sit in the chair and just read and look out (very regularly there would be seals or birds swimming close by). The kitchen is well laid out for cooking and the bathroom, shower, laundry and dishwasher all worked great.
The one thing I sadly never got a chance to try was kayaking and using there BBQ. I would have loved to but in March/April this year it was pretty rainy every weekend and my weeknights I was often working late in my new job. Still, being able to BBQ and kayak and seeing the place in the summer would only make the place more amazing.
Did I mention how quiet it is there. It is incredibly peaceful. I would walk out of my quiet suite and outdoors it would be even more quiet! Just the sounds of the water gentle lapping on the shore, and the occasional sound of a bird or something. Magical.
I moved into this unit without knowing Kathryn or John (or really anyone in the Duncan/Maple Bay area) and boy did I luck out. I would highly recommend this place to my friends and family in a heartbeat. I hope you love it too.
Beautiful place with great people very relaxing
This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed at. With the ocean just steps away to a gorgeous patio on the water where i could relax in the south facing sunshine. I was able to use kayaks provided if I wanted to explore the surrounding coastal area. Turn around and start walking and you will find your way up one of the many hiking paths on maple mountain. There is a restaurant about a 5 minute walk away that has amazing food and live music if your there on the right night.
This property was immaculate and very hard to leave. John and Katherine were very accommodating while still giving me privacy. The fact that i was able to have my dog there was enough to decide to stay there. I didnt know that they love dogs more than me! All in all I look forward to booking my next stay with them and would recommend anyone to do the same.
p.s. Katherine is a great masseuse! And being able to simply go upstairs for a massage was like the cherry on top. Thank you guys so much for the wonderful experience Ill be back soon!
Thanks Riley for your kind words. It was awesome having you and Miss Saki here, you've become a friend we'd be happy to see anytime. Next time you are here, we'll get you out for a sail. Thanks, John & Kat.
Seaside Casita, Maple Bay - The Advertised View
Our stay at the Seaside Casita in Maple Bay was as advertised & met our expectation. First, the community of Maple Bay is lovely and made more special by our hosts Kathryn & John. It was a pleasure to stay in their studio and be entertained each morning by a family of sea otters. As well, it was delightful to prepare meals in a kitchen that looks out onto the views included in the pictures. Kathryn & John also provided dighnys & kayaks of which we took full advantage. Overall, Seaside Casita is ideally located for wine tours, hikes, and whale watching expeditions. Kathryn, John & the two labradors were great hosts and we hope to return.
Thanks so much for your kind words Dave and Deb, we look forward to your return in the future... have a good winter, the west coast is always here if you need a get away from the snow... K&J
