About Gerard Birkhauser

Greetings, I am a single man and seasoned San Diegian since the 1980s, who loves to recreate and enjoys the outdoors, particularly all types of bike riding, kayaking, scuba diving, and hiking. My other passions are cooking, gardening, social dancing, enjoying meals with friends, and rich conversations. I believe you also will appreciate the lovely home in a safe, secure, friendly cul-de-sac neighborhood that gets much more sun and far less traffic than the beach communities. My experience and philosophy is simply to be available if needed, yet provide guest their space and privacy. Accidents happen, esp. when kids are involved; I am an understanding person. I truly desire that your stay is an amazing, hassle-free experience, intended to be concentrated on friends, family, recreating, and building fond memories. That what I would desire on my vacation!

Why Gerard Birkhauser chose Clairemont Mesa West

This has always been an absolutely non-smoking and pet-free home that folks appreciate. You'll appreciate relaxing on the raised patio in the morning while enjoying the singing birds or views from the backyard hill. It is a spacious, secure, private fenced backyard in a quite canyon with many lush gardens and different levels of scenery, including a view of SeaWorld fireworks display in distance. A partially-shaded patio with bbq and amble seating for a small group is great for outdoor meals, appreciating a cool canyon breeze, many birds, and occasional wildlife (lizards, rabbits, possums, and possible raccoon).

The house is located about 15-20 minute drive away from SD Airport and downtown, centrally located in the city. It is near all major Freeways (Hwy 5, Hwy 8, Hwy 805, Hwy 15, Hwy 163, Hwy 52).

The home and entire property is pet-free and non-smoking (inside and outside). There is Wi-Fi, but no TV; hopefully you have come to recreate and enjoy SD's beautiful scenery and mild climate.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Based on over 14 different stays with guests at my home, this is by far one of my worst experiences. Kausik and company asked to set up additional beds, which seemed odd since the place sleeps 8. Then they changed their ETA several times, many hours past the required check-in time, finally arriving after 3:00 am. Evidentially the reason was to evade my discovery of the size of the group, which they claimed was 8 adults. The maximum occupancy of 8 people (adults or children) is clearly stated. Turns out that they were a party of 12-14, failing to claim the children to avoid the stated additional guest fee (add $25.00 per night, per additional guest over 6). As a host it is a policy to meet the guests, as a welcoming gesture and offer any help which all guest have appreciated since it adds a ‘human’ touch. They intentionally avoided my multiple requests to briefly meet them on the property the following day at their convenience. I granted their request for a later departure adding extra 3 hours. On the day of their departure they agreed to meet me, although several from the group left the property with a vehicle. When I confronted them on the actual number of people they skirted the issue of additional guest, which neighbors and security cameras verified. Once I left, the other vehicle with many others returned as I watched from a friend’s home. They actually did not leave until over 4 hours after the normal 11 am check out, significantly delaying my cleaning schedule for next guests.

In good faith, I released their security deposit much quicker than the 7-day requirement and dismissed the granite countertop stain that the group caused. There was considerable clean-up and extra laundry (linens and towels) with these extra, unclaimed guests. I explained the rationale for the extra person charge, especially for children, who are usually responsible for more damage and wear and tear, and the increase in utilities and greater clean-up time required. Despite several requests to pay the additional guest charges for 6 additional people, they ignored my plea. I learned a valuable and costly lesson. Sadly I wrote this group off as the “outlier” and have faith in the greater good of previous guests.
