About Michael and Leanne Sharp

We are musicians and educators who have spent the last twenty years working in schools and churches in the New Orleans area. We have enjoyed visiting the Smokies during our breaks over the past few years. We love hiking, biking, and rafting, as well as poking around in antique shops.

Michael and Leanne Sharp purchased this cabin in 2016

Why Michael and Leanne Sharp chose Townsend

Townsend's nickname is "The Peaceful Side of the Smokies," and we love the tranquility and beauty of Laurel Valley. We never get tired of sitting on the front deck and drinking coffee while breathing in the fresh mountain air. From our cabin, surrounded by woodlands, we often enjoy seeing deer, wild turkeys and other wildlife.

What makes this cabin unique

Our three grown children and their families all live in the area and we enjoy having them hang out with "Nana" and "Papi" at the cabin. The floor plan is great when everybody is around, and the covered front porch/deck is a favorite spot. Being on a cul-de-sac also gives us room for extra parking. During fall and winter we have a clear view of the nearby mountain range. We are near all the major attractions of Pigeon Forge, Dollywood, and Cades Cove. Townsend has a quaint feel to it, with restaurants which are locally owned and operated.

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I along with our two kids ages 16 and 14 stayed 5 nights during the last week of March. We were extremely pleased with the layout, decor and overall comfortable feel of the cabin. I was concerned about the bed in the open area upstairs, but our kids actually fought over who got to sleep there. The whole place was so nice we even FaceTimed our parents to give them a “tour” around. Townsend is a nice, quieter town and close to the National Park near Cade’s Cove. Overall it was a fantastic place to stay and we’d highly recommended it!

Perfect setting for our first Christmas in the Smokies!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Perfection is the understatement for Higher Ground. We had everything we needed for our stay for the Christmas holidays. All we had to do was provide the food and we were set! The cabin is beautiful, perfect for adults and kids. We took 2 of our grandchildren with us, ages 7 & 5, with the youngest being in the autistic spectrum. Any change to his routine and he has problems. At Higher Ground he did great! He had a good time exploring and doing new things while at the cabin. We were worried about his experience but our worries were relieved once we got there and he didn't seem bothered by anything. The relaxation factor at the cabin I know helped him adjust easily. The owners have made this cabin feel so much like home its difficult to put into words in a review. If you are looking for the perfect place to spend your vacation time, this is it! Also the owners are friendly, accommodating beyond what you expect. Leanne made sure of 2 items were at the cabin for us that was so nice to have for the time we were there. Our Christmas here is one for our memory book that wont be forgotten. We will be back :) hopefully next year for Christmas and possibly more often than that. God bless you and thank you for helping us have a wonderful Christmas.

Relaxing and inspiring environment!

  • 5 of 5

We took a group of songwriters from Nashville to write some songs at this incredible cabin. It was the perfect getaway away in this secluded, inspiring place. We can't wait to come back to Higher Ground!

Townsend, Tennessee is a gateway community to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Visitors to Townsend enjoy the Peaceful Side of the Smokies. Townsend is rich in wild life - most visitors come with hope of seeing the ever popular Black Bear that inhabit the Park and surrounding areas.

Higher Ground' is nestled into the woods and is extremely private. You'll feel you have arrived at a tree house getaway! There is an abundance of wildlife in Laurel Valley, including bear, deer, wild turkey, hawks and owls - just to name a few.

If cabin sightings are not enough, you can take the short trip to the Cades Cove Loop for another round. You can hike the trails, ride your bike, take photographs, fly fish or tube down the Little River. There are several tubing providers on the river. Most outfitters will hook you up with a tube and river access. You can float down the river for an hour of so. They will pick you up and bus you back to the starting point, only to do it all again. What a way to cool off on hot summer days!

There are dozens of day-rides from Townsend. One of our favorites is to leave Townsend and travel through the Park to Gatlinburg. Take a right at Sugarlands Visitors Center and you can ride to Cherokee, North Carolina in just an hour or so. Enjoy lunch and head back...time to burn. Don't forget to stop at Newfound Gap and Clingman's Dome. DON'T leave without your camera!

The Foothills Parkway is closer to home. Only a couple of miles from Townsend, this ride takes you across the ridge of the mountain with spectacular overlooks, to Chilhowee Lake. At the end of the Parkway, take a left and you're on the Tail of the Dragon --- 318 curves in 11 miles --- not for the faint of heart.. A longer ride will take you to Tellico Plains for lunch at the Tellico Plains Bakery, a great place to enjoy a meal before heading back to Townsend or across the Cherohala Skyway. I could spend hours talking about this; so just ask when you call.

A short, 30-minute ride from Townsend will land you in Pigeon Forge. A great place to visit but NOT the quiet side by any stretch of imagination. It's the center for entertainment and shopping in the Smokies. Home to the Tanger Outlets, countless restaurants and entertainment spots and the ever popular Dollywood.

Come join us in Townsend! On the Peaceful Side of the Smokies.

We look forward to hearing from you.
