About the property

My Old Kentucky Home...

Built for each of our parents, that used to live in Alaska, so that they had a place to relax while on extended stays.

Located on our property (far from the house) is one of Boone Counties Historic grave sites for the Smith family The Shack is located directly behind our main house, and we live here year around. We have 5 dogs with us on our property that love chasing the birds, deer and rabbits that show up.

We felt like it would be fun to build what looked like the “old Smith shack”, but with all the modern luxury. We think we accomplished our objective. The house uses old barn beams that are from a barn in Indiana that housed Morgans Raiders in the Civil War. http:// war/general-morgan-s-raid-on-indiana. We used tobacco sticks from a local families barns as the isles for the railing of the loft. Even the stove is “old timey”. We combined this with custom built cabinets in the galley kitchen and an old school shower head that ‘lets water flow’.

The shack will take you back to a bygone era as you curl up and read a book in front of the wood burning stove, relax on the porch rocking chairs, or sleep in late after a full day enjoying the activities of Northern Kentucky.

This cabin has a loft where we can fit another double sized blow-up mattress or you can put the blow-up mattress downstairs.

We provide luxury quality linens on the bed for maximum comfort while you stay. 1000 thread count linens in 100% cotton on the beds.

*NEW ADDITION! Just added a double bed to the 2nd downstairs bedroom. Moved the day bed with 2 twin mattresses upstairs to the loft. Loft has queen size blow up mattress that can be set up to be used upstairs or downstairs!

You will be greeted by a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies when you first check in to our cabin.

WE ARE 14 MILES FROM THE CREATION MUSEUM AND 31 MILES FROM THE ARK ENCOUNTER!

**Please note: the loft has very steep stairs and if you will be considering using this space, make sure you can are fit and able to use these steps. Not recommended for families with very young children**

Excellent place for visiting creation museum and the Ark Encounter.

  • 5 of 5

The Shack is located 10-15 minutes from the creation museum and about 30-40 minutes from the Ark Encounter. There is a Kroger about 5 minutes away allowing to buy groceries there before arriving to the shack. April and Chuck were very welcoming and made us feel like home during our stay. We will definitely stay here again when we make more trips to the ark.

We absolutely LOVED staying here!!

  • 5 of 5

My Old Kentucky Home Cabin was absolutely perfect! We were on a delayed anniversary trip to see The Ark Encounter, The Creation Museum, and The Cincinnati Zoo. Wanted a special place to stay and enjoy the beautiful Kentucky rolling green pastures. We found the right place! The Whitlock family was so welcoming. Starting with homemade chocolate chip cookies and a beautiful congrats card on my new job that I accepted on the drive up. The cabin was perfect. Clean and comfortable and decorated like we were at home. We loved their dogs running in the pastures. Saw deer late in the day. Great restaurants within minutes. This is the most perfect place to stay to visit these attractions. All were within like 30 minutes of the cabin. This was my first VRBO and we could not have been more pleased. We will be back to stay! I'm telling my friends in Alabama about the Ark Encounter and where to stay in northern Kentucky. Thank you, April and Chuck! Wonderful family. Wonderful place to stay. Wonderful memories. Doug Marshall

Best mix rustic and modern!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect cabin getaway if you're looking for place to stay in Northern Kentucky. In owner's back yard (but a huge yard) and they are very accommodating. Rough hewn beams, exposed plumbing, barn-door style doors and hardware. "Shabby chic" antique furnishings--yet comes with towel warmers in the bathroom, thick terry bathrobes, a Keurig machine, central heat and air, and all the comforts of home. Cute antique stove, that really works. Would definitely stay here again.

Adorable cabin with wonderful hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to the warmest welcome from April and her family. It was dark and they came out to greet us, carried in our bags in and showed us around. There was even a welcome letter explaining all the best local places to eat and visit. The cabin is in close proximity to April's house, both are down a long driveway 1/4 mile off the road. It is a very private setting yet the amenities of town are just a few minutes away. If you love dogs, this is the place for you! There are 5 resident dogs on the property who were all very friendly and fun to play with. We enjoyed having morning coffee on the porch with one of the dogs and ventured off to explore the rest of the property. There is a sport court with a basketball hoop and trampoline in the yard that we were allowed to use. Although the cabin looks like an old, original settlers cabin, it is new and comfortable on the inside. The kitchen had everything we needed including a Keurig coffee maker with k cups. No TV, but plenty of cards and games for entertainment.

Note: The steps to access the loft are steep so not appropriate for young kids. The loft is a bonus area furnished with a table and chairs. My adult son used the loft as a bedroom and slept on the inflatable mattress which he said was comfortable.

April and her family were very outgoing and friendly. It felt good knowing they were close by if we needed anything. They even gave us a jar of honey made from the bees on their property!

Welcoming hosts, friendly dogs and a cute and comfortable stay!!!
