Overview

About the property

Cozy, comfy 2-level condo, sleeps 6 comfortably, just steps to the slopes!

'Steamboat Retreat' is the perfect place to curl up with a cup of cocoa in front of the fire after a full day of enjoying Steamboat's legendary champagne powder in winter, or hiking in summer!

Do you love waking up slowly on a winter morning, snuggling under the fluffy comforter, and then cooking a leisurely breakfast before heading out for a fantastic day of sun and snow? Perhaps your idea of the perfect vacation is to spring out of bed early and be at the gondola as soon as it opens, so that you can be the first to break the fresh powder or groomers. Either way, we've got you covered!

Start your day with a cup of fresh-ground coffee and breakfast in our very well appointed stainless/granite kitchen. (I like to cook and have equipped the kitchen accordingly!) Slip into your ski/snowboard clothes - your boots are warm from sitting on the fireplace hearth - and grab your equipment from the heated garage, and then walk across the street (or take the free on-call shuttle) to the gondola and quick access to CHAMPAGNE POWDER!!

You may come back for lunch and a nap, or eat at any of the great restaurants on the mountain or at the base - don't miss the pho at Thunderhead!

At the end of the day, ski almost to your vacation condo, take the short walk back across the street (or take the free shuttle), shed your ski/snowboard gear, pour yourself some water or other beverage, and pop out the door to the hot tub or heated pool - right next to the condo! You may have chili simmering in the crockpot, ready for you to enjoy a hearty dinner in your cozy pajamas after a relaxing soak in the hot tub, or you may choose to take the free shuttle to any of the great restaurants on the mountain or downtown. We are happy to recommend our favorites for you.

Features of our vacation home:

This exclusive 1232 sq ft two bedroom, three bath condominium at the Phoenix features new carpet (updated from the green carpet in photos), stainless appliances, granite countertops, slate flooring, and rustic Mexican furniture. Large master has brand new queen bed, private bath, and granite-topped vanity, plus a patio with easy access to the heated pool/hot tubs a few yards away. Second bedroom has twin beds and private bath, and the living area includes a very comfortable pull-out couch with a brand new air mattress, and a private bath. Living/dining area overlooks the pool area.

The upper level also includes a heated one-car garage with ski racks; walk across Apres Ski Way to the slopes and ski/hike down to the gondola. After an active day outside, the free shuttle can take you to the ski area base or downtown for dinner at one of Steamboat's fabulous restaurants.

Pack and play available; condo certified kid-friendly by our two small kids. 'A' rated by management company.

Reservation policy: 3 night minimum stay. $300 deposit to reserve (refundable - converts to a security deposit). Cancellations/refunds by owner discretion.

About Rick Johnson

Steamboat Retreat belongs to Anne & Rick Johnson (AZ) and John & Mimi Catlin (MD and UK), who are Anne's parents. We regularly visit Steamboat with the kids/grandkids, (elementary-school age). Rick is an airline pilot (retired from USAF), John is an engineer, Anne is a recovering engineer and entrepreneur, Natalie is a fashionista, Ryan is a trip, and Mimi stays busy trying to keep track of the rest of the gang.

Rick Johnson purchased this condo in 2006

Why Rick Johnson chose Northwest

The Yampa Valley Curse got us! We went to Steamboat for skiing in 2002, and have been coming back ever since. The skiing is fantastic, the town is friendly, and the Phoenix is in a great location.

What makes this condo unique

The condo itself is beautifully decorated and well positioned in the complex, overlooking the pool. The slopes are right across the street, so we can easily walk to the base area, including ski school. The Phoenix has a BRAND NEW exterior, with all new windows and doors - come check it out!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an awesome vacation in Steamboat. We had easy access to Christy sports for equipment rental, easy access ( walk across the street) to the slopes, shopping and dining. Only time we used our rental auto was to get there from Denver, one trip to town for diner at Mahogany Ridge Brewery & a quick stop at Walmart and back to Denver. 3 baths were nice and access from the unit to the hot tub, sauna, and pool was the best at the Phoenix. Kitchen was loaded with anything you might need. Thanks R & A as this was one of the BEST vacations we have ever had! Your Friends from Ga. Go Dawgs!

Clean, convenient, and bigger than it appears

  • 5 of 5

This place was just perfect. It was our first time using vrbo and first time staying here. Every detail was covered. The instructions from the owner were easy to understand and everything worked as described. This place couldn't be located at a more convenient spot and was very comfortable. I don't want to spoil their surprises, but they provide more than they advertise. I hope all that follow have as good a time in Steamboat as our family did and find this condominium a great place to call home while you are there.

Enjoyed a very pleasant stay at Steamboat Retreat just prior to the 4th of July. Comfortable accomodations, very close to swimming pool and to Gondola Square (great for skiing AND summer activities, too). Would rent again.

Place is fine, but we had nightmare neighbors

  • 2 of 5

This condo is just fine. Not particularly flashy or spacious, but it was a good functional place to crash when we weren't outside enjoying Steamboat. HOWEVER, for 2 or our 3 nights, we had an absolute nightmare of an experience, since most of the units in the complex were rented out by Texan youth baseball teams that were in town for an annual tournament. They completely took over the complex's pool and courtyard for those 2 days/nights and were so loud, rude and even threatening (yes, I was threatened when I suggested to them to take their party inside at 1:45 am.), that we got very little sleep, no peaceful time to hang out on the balcony and certainly not ANY time in the pool or hot tub. One might think this was out of the hands of the owner, but he was well aware of the potential disruption but failed to disclose it. After several communications with him, he did admit that he "shies away from baseball tournament guests." Not disclosing the disruption of the baseball tournament was downright negligent. Rick did refund us $100, but that seems a pittance compared to what we had to endure. So, ask Rick point blank if there might be any disruptive neighbors before renting from him! I'd give the place 4 stars, but because of the negligence of the owner, I'm giving it 2.

Owner's Response: I’m sorry that our guest had such an unfortunate experience, but there is absolutely no way that we could have predicted that other guests in the complex would behave so inappropriately. Bad neighbors can appear anywhere, including exclusive high-end hotels, which are neither required nor expected to “disclose” the unlikely possibility of rude fellow guests. Like many condo complexes in Steamboat, the Phoenix has historically had some difficulties with a rare few of the many summer baseball groups, but the management company and the Property Owners' Association have discussed the issue at length and addressed it with solutions such as security and quiet hours. We have heard no complaints at all in the past couple of years about the behavior of other guests, so we had no reason to disclose a nonexistent problem. Very few, if any, of the owners who rent their own units will rent to large groups like the one you described. We have personally addressed the occasional loud groups in the hot tub during ski season, and they have always apologized and lowered the volume, particularly during quiet hours. Apparently the management company rented units this time to guests whose behavior was well below acceptable standards. We contacted the front desk numerous times and did our best to improve the situation by requesting immediate attention from security and alerting management, but unfortunately, we could not dismiss the unexpectedly rude contingent of visitors. The Phoenix will have a new management company in September 2017 and we will do our utmost to ensure that the new company is aware of the incident so they can screen guests better and ensure that security is ready to address any problem at any time.

Owner's Response: Our unit is not actually ski in/out. It is across the street from the slopes. We walk to/from the slopes.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. The guest before you checked out on the morning of your arrival, and I understand that the crew had very little time to refresh the condo. We are working to ensure that all future cleanings are more thorough, even on short turnovers. We’re glad that you had a great time in Steamboat!
