Island time on our time

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our week glamping and touring around Maui. The truck allows you to go all over without wondering if you can get back to the road. It came very well-equipped with different camping supplies which made our vacation even better. First time putting the tent up took us a little longer ( it was in the dark). After that night, we became real pros. Michael was very accommodating throughout the entire rental. He is a great host. Luckily, we were blessed with wonderful weather . If you want freedom and don’t mind a little effort, this is a great opportunity!

Highlight of our trip!

  • 5 of 5

The three nights of camping with this truck was by far the highlight of our trip. Camping on Maui was extraordinary, and this setup really allowed us to see the heart of Maui.

Mike outfits the truck with the camping essentials. The memory foam mattress was very comfortable and spacious. The tent went up and down with incredible ease and speed and the quality far exceeded expectations. The versatility of the tent was outstanding, it provided a warm shelter on the 30 degree night on the mountain and completely opened up for a warm breezy night ocean side.

Pro tip: If you have never used one of these tents, check out a YouTube video for “Tepui tent setup” before you head out. It’s very easy to setup, but even easier if you have seen how to do before you are at the campsite.

Another commenter mentioned that finding a campsite on Maui can be difficult. We had a similar experience, though Mike has some great suggestions in the listing. Absolutely recommend researching the campsites before you pickup the camper and asking Mike for his suggestions, and make sure to get specifics on the directions, as many sites are off the road and unmarked.

Best Way to See the Most

  • 4 of 5

Had this rig for a week and I really don't think there is a better way to see as much as I had in that time. Quick setup (5 min or less) and same for taking it down, way better to sleep in than a tent on the ground (it included a large size foam mattress), almost all of the camping/beach equipment was provided and it was cheaper than a rental car and hotel/rental combo.

That being said there was one major drawback and that was finding a place to camp. Maui doesn't have a whole lot of official campgrounds you can set up early on and take a walk to a nearby beach or other attraction (beaches usually had open showers to use, especially in Kihei). No Camping signs are posted almost everywhere you would want to camp, so at times we just ignored them. But for someone, especially a visiting tourist, who was new to the island you don't want to feel like you have to ignore local laws to enjoy yourself. That being said, I eventually started to feel like as long as you were tucked away somewhere discreet, setup after sunset and packed just after sunrise and leave the place as you found it I don't think most people would mind.

In any regard my overall experience was a great one, seen a lot, ate a lot, and did a lot. well worth my time and money

My recommendations

1. Stay at the Hosmer Grove Campground and catch the sunset and sunrise on the top of the mountain. But give yourself a little time to get there.

2. Fish tacos at Hulas in Whalers Village, now my official favorite food.

3. Rent some snorkels for your time there from a Boss Frogs, you can return them to any Boss Frog location and there is a fair number of them.

A heads up

1. The time I was there (January 10th, 2018) the Seven Sacred Pools was closed and no swimming allowed, get an update before you go. But you can still walk up to the waterfall further inland and see that.

2. Cell Phone reception didn't cover all of the island (I was with Virgin at the time)

3. Cab ride to pick up the rig was $80, if you look you might find cheaper deals

Happy Trails.

Exactly what I was looking for!

  • 5 of 5

This truck was the perfect home away from home for this trip. It was in great shape and could get me anywhere I wanted to go on the island with confidence. I honestly went in with low expectations of the tent and was blown away! The tent is large and comfortable. It has a rain fly if the weather gets bad or can be completely opened up to enjoy the breeze and the stars at night. There is a comfy mattress built in to the base of the tent and I slept like a baby.

I spent a couple nights camping just feet from the crashing ocean with no other people for miles around and my last night on a bluff overlooking the legendary Jaws surf break. I woke up each morning grinning from ear to ear as I cooked my breakfast and enjoyed the peace and beauty.

Mike outfits the truck with everything you need from cooking and eating utensils to bedding, camp chairs and towels.

Just be aware that Mike does not live super close to the airport, so it's about a half hour Uber or taxi ride to pick up the truck. Only the high end Ubers are allowed into the airport which can get expensive. If you get the shuttle to the Enterprise rental lot you can get a regular Uber for around $50 (other rental lots are still considered in the airport). A taxi cost around $85.

I am definitely planning on renting this truck again next time I'm on Maui. I can't imagine a better way to see the island and it's cheaper than renting a room and a car!

Great way to start our vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We loved being able to travel the island of Maui and stay in different locations! Mike is easy to work with and very knowledgeable about the island. You won’t be disappointed with this, the tent is huge and is easy to set up in about 5 minutes.
