Historical countryside home
Great location and enjoyable stay. Great family time.
Three Rs: Relax, Recreation, Reunite
Donna’s property was the perfect setting for 8 friends from junior high school to gather for an annual reunion. The pool, porch, outdoor living room with fire pit table, the house's large dining room table and open kitchen allowed us to endlessly catch up both indoors and out.
We cooked 7 meals and remained on the property for 3 days with the help of kitchen and outdoor grill. The 5 bathrooms and 5 beds easily accommodated 8 women for the long weekend.
Great place for friends or family reunion!
Wonderful country retreat
We had a wonderful girls weekend. The home gave us plenty of room to spread out. Donna was incredibly responsive and never annoyed with even the smallest question. We enjoyed the pool. Wish there were more layout chairs but would bring some fold up ones next time so that’s an easy fix. We had everything we needed and cute downtown Morris was very close. Thanks Donna!
We rented the property to have a small outdoor wedding (with an indoor back up plan) and allow our families to have somewhere to stay. We could not be happier with the experience. The house is absolutely beautiful and we found a perfect spot outside to hold the ceremony. The owners are quick to respond with any questions. We would highly recommend this property.
A perfect spot for a family gathering
This beautiful old house was the perfect spot for our group of eight kids and adults to vacation together. The house is truly stunning with high ceilings, gorgeous wood trim, and carved brass features--and it has five bathrooms! The kitchen is well supplied for cooking for a group and the huge dining room makes you feel like part of the cast of Downton Abbey. At night, it is so quiet and dark. You can sit on the back porch and watch hundreds of fireflies light up the surrounding corn fields. In the morning, you are serenaded by the sound of doves. So lovely!
The kids enjoyed endless hours in the pool and, unlike at hotel pools, they could scream and laugh as loudly as they wanted. There are no neighbors within earshot to be bothered.
The location was perfect for our group of eight with varied and diverse interests. It was close enough to Chicago for a day or two, but we also spent a day at Starved Rock and another in the charming town in Naperville. On our off days, we enjoyed cooking and relaxing at home, and Morris offers several cute shops, restaurants, bakeries, and a bowling alley with laser tag.
Like the other reviewer, I got tripped up a bit by the photos. They show a washer and drier that are no longer there. And the bedrooms are sparsely furnished without bedframes and armoires as shown. I do think it's worth mentioning that, while the water is no doubt safe to drink, the sulfur smell is strong. We bought bottled water to drink. Also, note that there is no Wifi or cable--this actually turned out to be a delightful suprise. Everybody unplugged, and we fully experienced the spacious beauty and warm energy of this amazing old house.
MY DAD'S 80TH BIRTHDAY
THE TRIP TO THE COUNTRY AND MANSION WAS A BEAUTIFUL SURPRISE FOR MY DAD FOR HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY WEEKEND CELEBRATION. WE ENJOYED THE SUNNY WEATHER POOLSIDE, PRIVACY AND THE QUIETNESS OF THE HOME'S SURROUNDINGS. MY ADVICE IN REGARDS TO THIS PROPERTY IS TO READ THE DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY AND DO NOT TRUST THE PHOTOS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE PHOTOS HAD SHOWN TELEVISIONS IN EACH OF THE BEDROOMS HOWEVER, ONCE WE ARRIVED WE HAD LEARNED THAT THERE WERE DIRECT TV CABLE WIRES AND REMOTES BUT NO CABLE TV SERVICE, ONLY A DVD PLAYER IN THE FAMILY ROOM THEREFORE, BRING OR RENT DVD'S FOR LATE NIGHT ENTERTAINMENT. THE BEDROOMS WERE A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT BECAUSE THEY WERE QUITE BARE AND THE FURNITURE PLAIN, NOTHING AT ALL LIKE THE GORGEOUS PHOTOS. I AM EXTREMELY SENSITIVE AND THE SULFUR AND IRON IN THE WELL WATER GAVE ME A BODY RASH WHICH TOOK DAYS AFTER MY VISIT TO OVERCOME. ALL THE FAUCETS HAD A STRONG SULFUR ODOR AND I WAS GLAD I DID NOT WASH ANY OF MY CLOTHES DURING MY STAY. A WASHING MACHINE AND DRYER WERE ADVERTISED BUT NEITHER WERE FOUND IN THE KITCHEN AREA, AS IN THE PHOTOS. LASTLY, I WANTED TO GRILL OUR MEALS OUTDOORS, BUT NO GRILL WAS AVAILABLE, AGAIN AS ADVERTISED, SO I HAD TO COOK INDOORS WHICH DID NOT HELP WITH KEEPING THE HOUSE COOL DURING 90 DEGREE WEATHER. THE OWNERS WERE VERY SORRY ABOUT THE GRILL BUT THEY NEED TO UPDATE THEIR PHOTOS. WE DID NOT HAVE HOT WATER IN THE SECOND LARGEST BATHROOM. WE DID NOTIFY THE OWNERS AND THEY DID COME TO CHECK ON THE WATER HEATER PROBLEM BUT IT WAS NOT RESOLVED. IT WAS A BIT OF AN INCONVENIENCE FOR FOUR ADULTS TO SHARE ONE BATHROOM.
Our property is as advertised on the VRBO website. The advantage of securing a property through VRBO is you can read and familiarize yourself with the property prior to your stay. The amenities did not list a TV or washer/dryer. On any given day there can be equipment failure as was the case in one of the 3 upstairs ensuites. The problem was resolved by pushing the reset button on the water heater. This property was our home for 10 years and we removed some of the furnishings when we moved. The home is beautifully decorated and speaks for itself. The grill was not available because it was put away prior to a rain storm. We simply forgot to put it out and would have gladly done so had we been notified. We have our own well and have had the water tested many times. It is absolutely safe for drinking and washing. The plumbing in the entire home has been upgraded. My husband and I work extremely hard to prepare this home for our guests. We pride ourselves in working with our guests in order to provide the best experience possible from facilitating your early arrival to providing a cot for your 80 year old father in case he was unable to climb the stairs. Our goal is for our guests to experience this nostalgic beautiful mansion and the property and come back for a second visit. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience you experienced during your stay. We would only hope to have the opportunity to again welome you as our guests.
