About the property

2 Master BRs, 2.5 Baths, Lg. Family Room & Kitchen, Massive Covered Porch

Chipmunk Mountain Cottage is located between the towns of Cashiers and Glenville in western North Carolina's Great Smoky Mountains. Because the home is situated at an elevation of 3,800 ft., spring and summer temperatures are cool and comfortable. What's more, autumn's lush foliage are particularly spectacular in this part of the US. This charming, cozy - and recently updated - home is a perfect getaway for people who enjoy the serenity of its private setting, but also want to be close to grocery stores, beautiful waterfalls, farmers' markets, marinas, golf courses, hiking trails, antique shops, and more. In fact, it's only a short five-minute drive into downtown Cashiers and just 20 minutes to lovely Highlands, NC.

About David & Mary Scarborough

We feel fortunate to have lived in many wonderful places throughout our individual and collectives lives - Michigan, Connecticut, DC, Maryland, South Carolina, Arizona, Germany, England and more.

And while we enjoyed them all, we fell in love with this area, and after spending summers here in NC and winters in AZ, we decided to pull up stakes in AZ and make this area our permanent home.

But with five grown children with families of their own - all of whom love to visit the mountains (and us:>) - we simply needed a bigger year-round home. But we couldn’t bear to sell our little gem and over time we realized that we weren’t spending enough time in our home so recently decided to offer it to others - so they too, can experience the joy, peace, beauty, and fun this area has to offer. As such, we consider this property a home - not a rental. We want it to be just as comfortable for you as it is for us.

We are independent business & marketing consultants - as well as writers/authors with three published books - and as long as we have computers and an Internet connection, we’re in business! So, we get to sit on our porch, listen to music and laughter from folks enjoying their time on Lake Glenville, breathe in the cool mountain air, watch critters, and view the lush foliage that comes with our deciduous rain forests area. We are lucky people!

David & Mary Scarborough purchased this house in 2006

Why David & Mary Scarborough chose Glenville

We looked at a lot of houses in the area before we bought - some were bigger, newer and had a few more amenities than this home. But we fell in love with the view and knew we could make it a very special place for ourselves and our family and friends. We hope you love it as much as we do!

What makes this house unique

We've given this home a lot of tender love and care because it's very important to us - and we recognize that it is to others as well. Our sophisticated, "shabby chic" home comes with a well-equipped kitchen for those who love to cook; beautiful, wool Persian rugs; wood floors; two king beds; a small gold-fish pond; huge covered deck with outdoor seating and fire table (great on cool mountain nights), and more.

Perfect mountain cottage

  • 5 of 5

Just returned home from a relaxing impromptu trip with my wife to the NC mountains. Staying at this cabin for two nights was an absolute treat. My wife wouldn't stop gushing about the cute and cozy style of the cottage which had everything you could need for a mountain getaway. The view from the back deck of the lake was fantastic and the location was very close to Cashiers, Highlands and some nearby waterfall hikes. Great if you wanted to get out and be active or just stay in and relax by the fireplace. I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay or a better host to deal with. David provided clear instructions on everything the well-appointed cottage had to offer. We couldn't recommend this place enough! Loved it, and hope to return someday soon.

Owner's Response: Thanks Matt, we are so happy you had a great mountain weekend get-a-way. We too love sitting on the deck and taking in the wonderful views of the lake and mountains - it's what inspires us to share this experience with others. It was a pleasure having you and your wife. Our family of four had a wonderful time staying at this home while exploring the surrounding area. The owners have really put a lot of extra thought and care into making their guests have a comfortable experience. It’s a lovely home. Thank you!

Owner's Response: Hi Lauren, Thank you for staying with us this past weekend and your wonderful comments. I know it was a little cold this past weekend - I noticed the pond was still frozen over yesterday - but winter in the mountains next to a cozy fire is a great get away. We look forward to you visiting with us again soon. Best David and Mary Scarborough

The cabin was very spacious and cozy. The location of the cabin was near Cashire and Highland so you have many nearby activities to do during your stay. Thank you Mary and David for such welcome, we had a great time during our short stay unfortunately. We will definetely be back.

warm, comfortable mountain home with great views and local natural sites

  • 5 of 5

This was the third mountain cabin/home we have rented in the last 6 months. The house was great, fully equipped kitchen and great outdoor space . Everything as advertised.

Covered porch area was great even in late November and view is beautiful. We had a problem with the gas fireplace( which is primary heat source) and David was over in a hour or so and had it resolved in 10 minutes.( Batteries for igniter had died).

House was close to Cashiers shopping- 2-3 miles with good roads in and out.

House was not as secluded as I initially thought, but this was not an issue as most of our time was on the outdoor rear deck or around the fireplace.

House was very clean and all the necessities were there to make for an very enjoyable stay.

Hot tub would have been nice.

I would highly recommend this home for any stays in the Cashiers/Glenville area.

Well deserved, and needed rest !

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, clean and peaceful !

The first couple days was rainy, windy and cold. However, we enjoyed just sitting back by the fireplace and watching Christmas Movies on the Hallmark Channel. Home was easy access from the main highway and close to town and a really nice Ingles Grocery Store. Nothing else needed for a mountain get-away !
