About Susan and Richard
We are both originally from California, Susan traveled around the world and Richard traveled through out the United States. Hawaii was one of my first adventure when I was in my twenties. I occasionally would visit Hawaii, it being one of my favorite places to live. Knowing this was a unique and magical place, we moved over and built our home, that was thirty two years ago. Always busy with improving our home, rental property and passionate about growing beautiful tropical plants to landscape property. "Green thumb" that's me! As your Host we welcome you and will assist and accommodate you with Aloha.
Susan and Richard purchased this Cottage in 1986
Why Susan and Richard chose Captain Cook
Quite and convenient for the explorer and adventurous fun in the sun. We have sunny mornings with some afternoon showers and cool evenings. This cottage sits alone on our property with lush tropical plants surrounding it for a feeling of privacy. We have Coffee trees, Macadamia nut trees, oranges, limes, lemons, bananas, passion fruit, avocado and coconut trees on property. We love to share the fruit with you when in season. This property is a beautiful natures private retreat . It is minutes away from Pu'uhonau o Honaunau National Historical Park with white sand beach, hiking trails, picnic benches and BBQ pits. It has a welcome center with lots of information about Hawaiian culture. Historical Painted Church (services are still being held every Saturday and Sunday). Kealakekua Bay where snorkeling is the best on the island. We have snorkel gear you may barrow and Kayak rentals are available at the Bay as well. I suggest making a picnic lunch to take with you and Kayak to the Captain Cooks monument. Usually you will encounter dolphins swimming along side of you. then you can snorkel once you get to the monument. You will have a great time.

Charming cottage, gracious hosts
This small cottage was perfect for 2 people. It even had a resident bright green gecko who showed up on the windowsill as mealtime entertainment next to the table. Everything was clean with unusual but interesting furnishings, gorgeous plants outside (so sad I missed mango season) including a huge macadamia nut tree with all the nuts we could crack. Richard and Susan were extremely helpful, and Richard has a fascinating life story. This is a place with lots of wildlife like jungle fowl and coqui frogs - both extremely loud at night and in the early morning, but a pair of cheap foam earplugs I fortunately had with me took care of the noise. It's also quite close to 2-step at the Place of Refuge, where the snorkeling is fabulous and spinner dolphins performed for us. Lots of fruit, Kona coffee, and mac nut stands on the side roads nearby.
Loved staying here. Very private, yet so close to beaches, grocery, restaurants and coffee shops. Extremely well equipped, so comfortable, felt like home. Beautiful gardens and wonderful hosts. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.
Comfortable, well equipped rental with great location!
We loved our stay at Richard and Susan's cottage. Hosts were very helpful with orienting us after our arrival and ongoing helpful local information during our stay. Cottage was incredibly well equipped. Everything you need both at cottage (bedding, utensils, etc) and away (snorkling gear, portable chairs, boogie boards etc.). Place very clean. Perfect size for two people. Loved the location. Close to so many great spots, but not centered in congested tourist area. All thumbs up! Thanks Susan and Richard for great stay!

You two were a pleasure to have and a plant went in the cottage yard as a reminder of the both of you, it’s nice that we know resorts aren’t the only way to stay while on a vacation! Thank you for the wonderful review on the Cottage hope we meet again in the future. Aloha and Mahalo. Susan and Richard
