Many of my ancestors were members of this church which was de-consecrated about 15 years ago. We bought it complete with pulpit, pews and songbooks, bell in the tower, dishes in the kitchen, etc. The original church was dedicated in 1877 and my relatives attended there until the end. There are stained glass windows in the sanctuary which are nearly 100 years old, two of which are in memory of my great grandparents. The sanctuary has not yet been remodeled, and it is not included in the area you will be renting.
The town of Hastings still appears on some maps but is no longer a real town. The main claim to fame for this small community is that John Dillinger stopped at the post office/general store to ask for directions to Warsaw on his way there to rob the bank. The original post office/general store is just down the road from the church and has also been turned into a family dwelling. The town was located in the middle of a swamp on a clay island. This is the reason that you will find Island Chapel, Island Cemetery, Island Lane Farm, Holstein Island Farm, etc in the neighborhood. In years past the swamps were drained and are now productive farmland, but the rich heritage remains.
We invite you to come enjoy yourselves and embrace the pace of years gone by in the country.
