About Neil Halvorson

I'm an attorney in Birmingham, Alabama. I've been a pilot for many years, so for me the flight to the northwoods takes about as long as driving from Milwaukee.

Neil Halvorson purchased this house in 1994

Why Neil Halvorson chose Iron River

My parents took me to the Northwoods as a child. I have fond memories of fishing, swimming, sitting by the camp fire, hunting and hiking. I've never lost my love for the Northwoods. When you arrive and smell the pine air, see the eagles flying overhead and experience the wildlife and purity that is this pristine wilderness, you'll know you've arrived at a very different, truly unique kind of place.

What makes this house unique

The peace and serenity are exceptional. The stars at night - especially the milky way - absolutely breathtaking. The warm days and cool nights, the crystal clear water, the pine air, the eagles overhead and the fox that runs through the yard, the many deer that saunter by to drink at the lake, all this makes this place spectacularly beautiful, truly magical, and totally enchanting. You'll never forget it.

Hardest part of vacation was leaving

  • 5 of 5

First I would like to thank Neil for sharing his lovely property with us to enjoy a relaxing week in the woods. The scenery was spectacular and the water was crystal clear. I don't think I have ever seen a cleaner lake. Although a large lake, it was quiet without a lot of boaters. I don't ever remember hearing a neighbor or seeing one.The house was beautiful and the lake view was astounding. Fishing was great. Although we rented a pontoon boat the kids also fished from the pier. It kept 2 adults busy at all times, one putting on night crawlers, one taking off the fish. The action was non stop. Fishing was also good from the pontoon boat. We had a trophy for the largest and smallest fish. A young girl who never fished, touched a worm or fish won for the largest fish. She learned to bait her own hook and take off the fish. Quit a accomplishment. I won't say who won for the smallest. Swimming was also great and the kids who were allowed to, loved swimming out to the raft. The yard was spacious. Everyday they would have a ball game or 2. One cooler day we set up an obstacle course with 10 different events. It was fun watching the families compete against each other. Although most of our time was spent outdoors, after the bonfire it was nice to retreat to the lovely home. There was plenty of room and everything you would need was provided for you. Dwayne and I were lucky enough to get the lower level when we picked straws. When we retreated for the night the sounds of the 6 kids and 6 other adults were not heard. It also gave us our own door so when I went out at 5 in the morning with my coffee I didn't wake anyone. I enjoyed watching the deer cross the yard and the eagle fly off to start its day. Most of all I loved hearing and seeing the loons. There was so much to do outside and in the area that I am sorry to say we never used the hot tub, maybe if it was cooler. I am usually a camper and this was my first time renting a home. It was not a disappointment. Actually it was a lot easier. I liked having a washer and dryer available. I wouldn't have needlessly brought a suitcase full of clothes. It was hard to see our vacation come to an end. Tried winning the lottery so we could buy it. My only hope is that this property will still be available next year for us to rent again. Thank you again Neil for the use of your lovely place. Linda

What a wonderful lake!

  • 4 of 5

Our family stayed in Aug. for a week. It is a very private location with the most wonderful lake. The water is clear and weed free. The kids spend everyday in the water including in the rain. The swim platform was great and it is very quiet. Few other boaters. The house is large and worked well for us. However while we were there the house was for sale and people came down to the house unannounced to look at it and we were not very comfortable with that. The house has some deferred maintenance in all the doors to the decks are inoperable, the steps outside are in need of repair and the hot tub was not functioning at all, there is no pizza oven as advertised. The kitchen was in need of a deep clean and you have to hall your own trash to the landfill. But overall we had a great time. The weather was good, the lake was BEAUTIFUL and we got enough good fish for a fish dinner on the last day. I don't like to give any negative comments but we rely heavily on the reviews left by others so we wanted to be honest.

Owner's Response: As to the deferred maintenance, we can only work at the Lodge during the off season. This guest, unfortunately, was scheduled at the end of a VERY busy season at the Lodge, so we do not doubt that there was deferred maintenance to be done - there always is at season's end. The first we heard of the unwanted "buyers" driving in to look at the Lodge was when this guest said so in their review. Had we known this was an issue, it would have been addressed before it became part of the guest's review. We have changed our for sale signage to indicate "by appointment only" to resolve the issue mentioned by the guest and if we have to we will take the Lodge off the market during the Summer rental season. In our more than 10 years of Lodge rentals, only one guest ever was denied the use of the hot tub due to mechanical failure. A new spa heater will be installed and no guest will be denied use of any of the Lodge's amenities. The balance of the reviews are much more accurate as to the Lodge experience than was this last review.

David A. and family

  • 5 of 5

We were there from June 25 thru July 2nd. We are from just outside Dallas where the temp. is regularly approaching 100 degrees. There were six of us including my 14 month old granddaughter. At first we were a little disappointed because there was no cable or satellite for the television and we virtually had no signal for our phones or laptops. But after a few days we realized this place was perfect, our family actually talked and did things as a family. We went to Iron River , Mich. for the absolutely best Pizza we have ever had and we went to Phelps, Wis. for broasted chicken in a little bar next to a gas station. The people were fantastic and the owner of the Jewel was very helpful in every way. The home was super, we would however recommend that you take strong horse fly spray if you head out on a boat. We rented a pontoon boat for the week and really enjoyed the lake. We even saw two bald eagles that make their home across from the Jewel. If you fly into Green Bay be sure you put Phelps Wisc. in the navigator. All in all it was a very peaceful and relaxing week. Can you imagine sleeping with the windows open with 40-50 degrees at night and 60's & 70's during the days. Loved it and would highly recommend Jewel of the North.

Owner's Response: David A and family were fantastic guests. We often get feedback from our guests about the reconnect with their family that they experience while at the Lodge. Its such an enchanting place, you can't avoid being impacted by the natural beauty and peace you experience in this place. Since David's stay, we have installed a faster modem and upgraded our wifi service. With so many things to do at the Lodge, TV is really the last entertainment option. Our guests can stream video through Netflix and other online services. Thanks David A & family for vacationing with us at the Lodge on Smoky Lake!

Even Better Than Advertised

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a true Northwoods experience look no further than Smoky Lake Lodge. This beautiful home was everything we were looking for and more. We recently spent a week here with 3 families including 6 adults and 10 children. There was plenty of sleeping room and the kids loved the spacious loft with bunk beds. The house was stocked as if the owners lived there themselves. The owner was a pleasure to deal with and was quick to respond when we had some questions while we were there.

The water was crystal clear and you couldn't throw in a fishing line without pulling out a fish. We loved the fact that the home was surrounded by the beautiful forest and the privacy was unmatched. The kids especially loved the huge yard where every day at 3:30 they held a whiffle ball game.

We definitely recommend this home for a family getaway. We can't wait to vacation at the lodge again next year. Thank you Neil.

Owner's Response: With a place as amazing as the Lodge at Smoky Lake, its easy to exceed guest expectations. I have been to the Lodge countless times and I can honestly say that there's at least one new amazement experienced with each visit. It will be an experience as unique as the Northwoods. What will you remember from your stay?

Awesome Vacation !

  • 5 of 5

We just finished our week at your beautiful lake home and it was everything that you promised. Our entire family agreed that it was a great vacation home for us, and the property was beautiful. We were glad to be there instead of Gulf Shores. The weather was perfect..we are sooooo tired of 100 degree days and 90 degree nights.

The boat was awesome and we had no problems with it...caught almost 50 fish. My son saw a bear a few miles from your place. I watched and watched, but never saw We saw several deer, eagles, a falcon, and the usual ....but I really wanted to see a bear.

We were usually the only ones on the lake which was awesome. We spent most of our time fishing and swimming. The beach was perfect for the little ones. My grandson has it all figure out. He will trade his house for yours, and I can come and see them all of the time.....he's 4. How do you feel about St.Louis?

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. Our vacation was perfect.

God bless you.

Owner's Response: It warms our hearts to get feedback that our guests truly enjoyed their stay at our Lodge. I have to say that the most enchanting aspect of the Lodge is the wildlife! We have seen a dozen eagles playing in the sky overhead, 4 baby raccoons stumbling into the yard, herds of deer on the front lawn at night or running down the frozen lake in winter, a huge turtle that looked like a dinosaur as it sauntered through the yard, a red fox with a bushy tail chasing chipmunks, huge muskies, large schools of fish, the list goes on and on. Bear are very skittish and even I haven't seen one at the Lodge yet. The wildlife is only a part of the enchantment of the Lodge at Smoky Lake.
