Beautiful property, great spring break getaway
My family and I had a wonderful time on our spring break trip to Ruskin FL where we stayed at the Harbor House. It is located in a quiet neighborhood on the Manatee river, with a great little dock for fishing and relaxing by the water. We saw different wildlife every day from multiple manatees to stingrays and water fowl like ospreys and grey herons. The lovely beaches on Anna Maria island are a short car ride south and Clearwater just across the bay. My family loved this vacation home. Hope we will be going back for years to come.
Peaceful beautiful setting... spacious clean home...
Our family had a wonderful relaxing stay! This is a hidden gem... secluded location that is still easy to access everything in the Tampa - Clearwater - St. Pete area. Thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor space on the water and the upper screened porch. Plenty of fresh towels and comfy beds. Kitchen has everything you need. Perfect!
Would do this again!
We stayed at this property for three nights and four days. Everything was wonderful! It was exactly as we expected; descriptions are 100% accurate. DeeAnn was quick to answer any questions we had beforehand, and very accommodating. A cold Front was passing through so we did not see any manatees; but we did see dolphins. Spending time down on the dock was a favorite activity. Our 10-year-old loved looking for lizards and crabs. Bring some sort of repellent, however, as the gnats/Noseeum’s become pretty atrocious at dusk. We caught a few fish off the dock, including a puffer fish, snapper, snook, and pinfish. If you’re looking for a quiet retreat, this is the place for you!
Loved the house...we saw dolphins & manatees every day! Owner Dee King is wonderful. If they add dock chairs and water toys, it’s a win-win! The surrounding area is quite rural but nearby Apollo Beach is a gem with great restaurant “Circles”!
Quiet retreat in rustic neighborhood. Clean and newly updated.
I debated long and hard about my rating of this property. 4 or 5 stars? Why? Well, there is one issue that you need to be aware of (I'll get to that later), but don't let it stop you from renting this place! We stayed here for 2 weeks and absolutely loved it!
The Neighborhood: The home is located in a fairly rustic area. Just off of Hwy 41, so it's easy to get to I-75 (Tampa, St. Pete, Sarasota are all about 30 minutes). But, it's also far enough off the hwy to enjoy very quiet, peaceful evenings on the dock. This isn't a "posh" Florida neighborhood where everything looks the same, but a real "old Florida" neighborhood. Some nice mobile home parks as you drive in, some homes in need of attention, too. There's a cow pasture, as well. But then there are some newer, nicer homes.
The home: The home was very clean. The "bug guy" came to spray while we were there, and he must be doing a good job, because we didn't see one bug in the house! The home has clearly been updated. New appliances, new flooring, newer furniture, new (55" or 65"?) TV in the living room, fast internet, new bedding and towels. A huge screened in deck overlooking the river (this was my office!). The beds and pillows were very comfortable. It was nice to have soap dispensers at each sink. There was plenty of toilet paper and garbage bags. We were glad to find ample towels and washcloths. Tupperware containers, pots and pans, plenty of silverware…all these little things that make the stay really pleasurable.
The river: We did not rent any water equipment while we were there, but talked about it often. The dock offers an opportunity to have a boat, but we could have had as much fun with a kayak, canoe or Sea-Doo. There is a semi -private boat launch (neighborhood only, from what I was told) right next door, so there was some activity there. We were fortunate enough to see Manatees swim by almost every day (right past the dock!) and a school of Sting Rays greeted us one morning!
The "issue": Again, I cannot stress this enough, do not pass on this home because of this issue, but I feel it has to be stated. The water for the home is supplied from a well. Since no one had been at the house prior to our arrival, the water had been sitting in the pipes for a while. The first couple of days, the water really smelled bad (in the shower and out of any faucet). It got better and finally disappeared, but it was pretty strong at first. We used bottled water for coffee and drinking
