About Mat and Nicole Thorburn
Mat and Nicole purchased this property in 2017. Mat retired from a private engineering company as a map maker almost 10 yrs ago. He started his own handyman business at the time and retired from his business about a year ago. Mat enjoys using his handyman skills at Pete's Cabin, updating and improving the property, making tables and lamps from juniper wood found in the surrounding area (you will see these items on the porch and throughout the cabin), and just generally enjoying doing the things he loves to do in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings around Pete's Cabin. Nicole grew up in Portland and met Mat when they both worked for the same mapping company in Portland. After they had their 2 girls, Nicole decided to return to school to become a registered nurse. She currently works in Portland. They have two college aged children who live in the Pacific Northwest and two cats who still live at home.

Why Mat and Nicole Thorburn chose Prineville
It is simply beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. If you are looking for a vacation location to "get away" with beautiful views of Central Oregon, this is your place. Mat enjoys adding fun things to keep you busy while at Petes cabin. For example, hanging a comfy hammock where you can read your books or take a snooze, a trail to our new horseshoe pit, and a swing to just "while away the hours". We also really enjoy exploring the area. Hiking all over, visiting the Painted Hills (there is a sample you can see from the porch! ), kayaking at the reservoir, and exploring nearby towns. The little town of Post, Oregon, just 14 miles from the cabin, is Oregon State's geographic center.
What makes this Cabin unique
Star gazing in the hot tub is simply the best. The sky is amazingly large and the stars and planets are so bright. We love looking at the Milky Way and tracking the constellations as they travel across the night sky. Occasional shooting stars certainly add to the enjoyment.

As previous reviews all suggest, this place is just flat out phenomenal. It is the most camera-ready desert location I'm aware of. The house itself is situated perfectly on a large piece of property that defines remote, at the end of a half-mile gravel road, beyond which is wide open public lands ready for exploration. From one of the comfortable chairs on the veranda, you gaze down on an elegant section of Prineville Reservoir and across a wide swath of the Ochoco Mountains. Our timing was superb, as we were treated to three afternoons and evenings of spectacular thunder and lightning, hail and rain, occasionally interrupted by bouts of sunshine and calmness that allowed for rare photography. Spectacular roses, reds and pinks. Wicked contrasts of bright whites and near-black grays. On video, I caught a juniper, about a mile distant, getting tagged by a bolt of lightning. The tree instantly went up in flames and burned and smoldered throughout a rainy night. The power went out, and instead of panicking, we toasted our good fortunes. Kitchen well stocked, furniture comfortable, clean bedrooms, wonderful shower in the main-floor bath, great fireplace. When we weren’t staring at the weather or hiking in the mornings, we played 8-ball on the pool table. We’re coming back.
For peace and quiet, photogenic scenery, and all the comforts of home, Pete’s Cabin fills the bill! The owners obviously love this place and have filled it with unique and spot-on decor and furnishings, inside and out. (We jokingly want to give a 1-star rating so no one else finds out about this gem!). We’re hoping to make this an at least annual getaway, knowing we will be refreshed and renewed!
The house was just as described. The location is perfect and the view is amazing.
We didn’t want to leave!
I’ve stayed in many different rental homes in central Oregon, and this is far and away my favorite. The home is comfortable and inviting. It is very well stocked. It has everything you would need in the kitchen, plenty of firewood and kindling for the indoor fireplace and outdoor fire pit. My kids loved the swing and hot tub. We all loved the hammock and the views from the porch. And those views are breathtaking, the sunsets beautiful, and more stars than I have ever seen before. I was able to see the Milky Way for the first time during our trip. At night you are seranaded by the crickets, owls and coyotes.
We saw deer, lizards, tons of different birds including blue heron, and bald eagles. They have binoculars available to get a closer look at all the critters. But the best thing about this home is what you don’t see or hear, and that’s people. It is not that far from other homes in the area, but the way it is situated in the property you really don’t hear or see anyone other then an occasional boat on the lake.
This home is the true meaning of rest and relaxation and I cannot wait to book another trip here.
We had a great time at the cabin. It was very remote and quiet. Loved the fire pit outside, hot tub and the horse shoes. It was a very relaxing and the views were amazing!! The only negative were the beds were not very comfortable. Otherwise the cabin met all of our needs.
Thank you for your kind words about the Cabin. We have recently added new mattresses to the cabin, and of course mattresses are such a personal preference. Firm, soft...etc. We tried to go middle of the road. Most people sleep like babies on them, sorry you did not! Again, Thank you for coming to and taking such wonderful care of the cabin. Please come back!
Jimmy and I wanted a quiet, private place to unwind and this is exactly what we found at Pete's cabin. The views were amazing and the cabin so comfortable with lots of fun stuff to do.
