Address: 274 Island Ave., Peaks Island, Maine 04108, USA

The Feathered Nest is a tranquil hideaway on Peaks Island, Maine, with a view of Diamond Passage. It's just an 8-minute walk from the Casco Bay ferry to/from Portland, and the beautiful, long Centennial Beach is just around the corner. Peaks Island offers boating, walking, bicycling, picnicking, birdwatching, plus some nice restaurants. There are several nice sandy beaches. Portland is convenient for entertainment and shopping.

Wraparound porch! If you're like us, you'll spend most of your waking hours on the spacious front deck - at the picnic table or in the generous hot tub - watching the birds (birders, ask for a list), the deer, and the boats go by. The living room has windows galore. Even when you're indoors you'll feel as if you're outdoors. If it gets chilly there's a wood stove to keep you cozy (oil heat, too).

The dining room has sliders to the deck - so you won't miss any of the action. The modern kitchen is well-equipped, including a convection oven (we love to cook!) and a dishwasher (who wants to wash dishes on vacation?!) there's a Weber grill on the porch.

Upstairs, the master bedroom is spacious with great windows and views. It has a queen size bed and a washer/dryer right at hand. The guest bedroom, which adjoins the master bedroom, has a double bed. Both beds have high quality mattresses so you can count on waking up refreshed. Plus, for overflow guests, the sofa is mattress quality (twin size). The sumptuous upstairs bathroom has a double shower to die for! It's made of beautiful hand-painted Talavera tile from Mexico. And, for those chilly mornings, the tiled floor has built-in heat! A half bath is conveniently located on the main floor.

PLEASE NOTE: In July and August all rentals are for a 6-night minimum (the 7th night is free).

About Allison Morrill

I have lived most of my adult life in Portland, Maine, USA. We love spending time at our island cottage (VRBO listing #118778). For several months each winter, we live at Casa Guadalupe in Merida, Mexico (VRBO listing #188785). Since we can't be in both places at once, it's gratifying that we can share our special homes with others!

Allison Morrill purchased this cottage in 2002

Great stay at a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This home is a perfect place to stay on Peaks - close to the ferry and the businesses on the island, but feels secluded with a beautiful view of the water from the back porch. The inside is charming, and everything we needed was there, with excellent instructions and lots of info on the area. The hot tub on the back deck looked inviting, but it was unseasonably warm so we did not use it. Just a couple of things to be aware of - as noted in the property description, the 2 bedrooms upstairs are adjoining, so you have to walk through the master to get to the smaller bedroom. (This was not an issue for us as were all family.) Both bedrooms have doors to the master bath upstairs which is huge and beautiful. The double shower with the tile is amazing, but just note that it does not have an enclosure or curtain around it. And if you have any physical limitations, the stairs to the upstairs are a bit steep as is common in older homes. We didn't do any cooking while we were there, but the kitchen was fully equipped and gorgeous also. All-in-all we loved staying there and would love to stay there again!

Great little cottage

  • 5 of 5

The owner was wonderful from the beginning! We had a really hard time finding the right house for our stay for a wedding we were attending on the island. Once we came in contact with the Feathered Nest everything was seamless. They answered our emails promtly and from deposit to checkout everything went smoothly. She had a PDF ready with everything we could possibly need during our stay. Great rental with great ownership! Hoping to make another trip back in the future.

Kind of cute, but a couple of issues

  • 2 of 5

Whether you'd enjoy staying here probably depends on your expectations for a getaway. This is a small, cozy, slightly renovated cottage that still needs a lot of work. It is well-located if you like to walk to the village for newspapers, milk, etc., and for access to the 2 or 3 restaurants/café in the village (and the only ones on the island). The kitchen is very well supplied and organized if you'd like to prepare meals there, with a large clean refrigerator like you'd have at your own home, and pretty much any kitchen utensils/dishes/cooking vessels, along with many basic ingredients I've never found at any other rental. The living room was okay, with a couple of side chairs that were pretty comfortable and a not-too-comfortable sofa which you'd be more interested in utilizing if you were there during the fall, as we were. The bedrooms are both on the second floor, up a very steep flight of stairs. The master bedroom bed was quite comfortable, as the owner says in her web listing. However, the only access to the second bedroom is through the master bedroom, which we don't believe was stated in the listing. This is an important oversight, we thought, since we had invited a couple we don't know that well to share the cottage with us and were quite glad they hadn't accompanied us when we arrived and saw the sleeping arrangement. There is a separate access to the very cute tiled bathroom from each bedroom, but if the people using the second bedroom want to get up earlier, go to bed later, or access their bedroom at any time, they have to walk through the master bedroom. Most of the second floor appeared as if it had been ripped out to make changes to the floor plan but not completely rebuilt or renovated, and was what I would call shabby.

The Mexican tiled bathroom was large, the heated floor great to walk on, but there was only enough hot water for one shower. We found that out when the second person tried to take a shower immediately after the first, and as soon as his hair was full of shampoo, the water turned ice cold. (The first shower was not particularly lengthy.)

The house was very clean, no complaints there.

The view to the harbor was nice but we realized that the view was predominantly through the branches of a tree that had lost its leaves, so in the summer, that view may not be available. There was a nice backyard with a large tree overhead, and in hot summer weather, this would be a pleasant place to hang out.

Owner's Response: Thanks for sharing your impressions of our eclectic island cottage! I have updated the photos and description to be more precise, and the hot water heater has been serviced (still takes a couple of minutes to reach the 2nd floor from the basement). Please come for another weekend on us!
