Woodbine Cottage & Bliss House

Two historic Victorian properties can be rented as a House Rental. We also have a studio apartment at a nearby location available for weekly rentals.

The Victorian Mansion featured is located in downtown Newport with just a short walk to the mansions, Thames Street, Easton's Beach or Cliff Walk. Just one block off Bellevue Ave, we are located in the old historic hill of Newport. You will be right in the center of the island's major attractions. If you are a history buff, nature lover, gardener or antiques, you will appreciate this home for its beauty and sophistication. The house has an incredible history as being the home of George Champlin Mason (Newport's first architect), the home to the Brown and Vanderbilt Vault families, as a working guesthouse known as Architects Inn for nearly 50 years, and now it is available for rental to you and your family. It is great for large groups who need multiple bathrooms and bedrooms. Please inquire with your group size and sleeping situation so we can best determine if this house would work for you.

Many people ask about chef services for the property for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Since you have a kitchen, many people bring a private chef or we can arrange for a private chef to come in to cook for you so you can recreate the historic feeling of a Newport gilded mansion with servants or the old time bed and breakfast feeling just for you and your family. If you want a recommendation, please have ready any allergies or dietary restrictions and how many meals the chef will do and what the menu would be. Depending on the scale we might recommend a caterer versus a private chef depending on what kind of stay you are looking to have. You pay them directly and will deal with the final negotiations however, if you let me know what you are looking for, I can recommend which company would be best to help you.

The Victorian House is a smaller house 1800 sq feet located off historic Broadway which is the more hipster side of Newport. It is a small three bedroom and 2.5 bathroom home but if you don't mind sharing bedrooms it is great for bachelorette parties or intimate families. Can sleep 10-12 people maximum.

We also have a studio apartment with a queen bed that is great for a weekly rental for two.

'The house is big enough to get lost in' say many of our guests.

Corporate Retreats, Conferences and Meetings are all welcome. Girls Weekends and Man-cations are also very popular here at our beautiful establishment. Rent the house for SuperBowl, Christmas, Birthday Party, Anniversary Party, or a family/ friends reunion.

About Nick

Brian is a nurse with a gentle spirit. His passions are gardening and cooking. He is a Master Gardner and designs and maintains the grounds. Nick is an entrepreneur with a few small businesses. He works hard and plays hard. He is a naturalist and likes to travel.

Nick purchased this house in 1996

Why Nick chose Top of the Hill

I chose Newport to live because it the only place in the world that has everything. It is an island in New England so it has four seasons but the seasons are mild. Newport is a busy, bustling city in the summer time but in the winter it is a quaint New England village. Rhode Island has over 400 miles of pure sand beaches with pristine, clean waters. You will see the air is fresh and the sounds are freshing. Newport is a fantastic walking and biking city. For years when I first moved here, I never even owned a car. I just walked everywhere because it was so easy. The locals range from your average, boat-builder 'Joe' to the yuppy, billionaire 'Winston'. The conversations you will have when you sit down at the docks or in one of the many local bars is just unbelievable. It feels like a European town. You will notice how many people are trim and healthy. People dress nicely and treat everyone with respect. Newport is out of this world.

What makes this house unique

The greatest thing is our location is perfect. You can ask anyone who lives in Newport and they will all say that our neighborhood is the most ideal location. It is a relaxing, safe, quiet residential street filled with big, old, early Victorian mansions, yet it is an easy walk to either side of the island. We are located right in the center of Newport. In a jiffy, I can walk to the beach for a healthy jog on Cliffwalk in the morning or I can just as quickly stroll down to Thames Street for a delicous dinner at a wine bar. It is safe and secure so it comfortable to walk home at night from the nightclubs and bars.

The house itself is a masterpiece. It is 99% genuine antiques from the Gilden Age of Newport. The architect built it as a summer home so it requires very little air conditioning in the summer to keep it comfortable. The bannisters and crown moldings are just exquiste. The rooms are terrific. The yard is completely screened in with natural scrubs and trees providing a private space to decompress. You will feel so at home when you are here, sipping wine on the verandah watching the birds, rabbits and squirrels.

Great location, big house, nice amenities

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here with a group of eight people. Great location for Newport--easily walk to shops, restaurants, bars, stores, etc. Older house and was very cold in the winter--we tried to keep the temperature up but it was just too drafty. It was so cold that the hot tub also froze and did not work. The property manager is very nice and helpful. He has plenty of material available to help you with your stay in Newport. All in all, great experience, nice house, perfect for large group gatherings or relaxing getaways.

Cute house good for a large group

  • 4 of 5

A group of 11 of us very much enjoyed staying at 10 Bliss Road. It was a convenient location for nearby activities and picking up groceries either by walking or uber/lyft. The house was cute and just the right size for us. Nick was very easy to get in contact with and responsive, he even made us cookies when we first arrived. There were no surprises when we arrived compared to what was detailed online. We enjoyed cooking in the kitchen, which was well supplied with pots and pans as well as spices. The hot tub was also a plus and we utilized the board games provided. Though we enjoyed our stay, we thought a couple of things could be improved. First, many of us had strong allergic reactions to the sheets or furniture, perhaps from the dust. Especially sleeping in the beds, many of us woke up with stuffy noses and swollen eyes. Second, the internet was very slow and streaming entertainment on the TV sometimes frustrating. Lastly, the fire alarm was overly sensitive the first night we stayed there and it was hard to figure out how to stop the alarm and we could not find instructions on how to do so. Perhaps that could be something put in the book of instructions provided ("the bible"). Overall, we had a great time at 10 Bliss Road and in Newport - it was the perfect spot for our vacation.

Amazing stay, exceeded all expectations

  • 5 of 5

Nick was a wonderful host from the time of booking until after the stay. From answering questions before and during our stay, to helping me sort out a left package after our stay - he made every second stress free.

The house was great! Spacious, clean, and equipped with all the amenities you may need. We had 18 guests for a weekend stay and will be back next year! It's location was also superb, with lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance.

I 1000% recommend this VRBO!

Great location!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Inn Bliss for a girl's weekend in August. Nick was very accommodating to our arrival time, as most of our party could not arrive until later in the evening. Each one of us had our own bed, which was nicely made up with sheets, pillow cases and blankets! We also each had a towel set to use for the weekend. We didn't have to pack any linens- it was great! The entire house has AC, which was a pleasant surprise upon our arrival. It definitely made sleeping very comfortable! The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, utensils, dishware, etc- everything you could ever need is provided!

Upon arrival, Nick showed two of us around the entire house. He made sure we knew how everything worked. He even sat with us and explained a map of the area, suggesting things to do and places to go for the weekend. There was even a plate of home made chocolate chip cookies upon arrival :)

There was an issue with the mail delivery and Nick receiving my check. Long story short, my check got lost in the mail, and Nick even covered the $30 stop fee I was charged from my bank!

Nick was accessible by phone the entire weekend. We happened to blow a fuse. I texted Nick, and he responded quickly telling me how to fix the problem. Power was restored!

Thanks for a great weekend!!
