This newly-renovated and solar-powered historic schoolhouse overlooks our family's regenerative organic farm. The Schoolhouse is bright and open, with a modern-rustic feel. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a country setting with views of the Green Mountains in every direction. Come to unwind, paint, frolic, cook, and enjoy a quintessential Vermont experience.

We've just finished renovating the Schoolhouse and began welcoming guests this summer. This 800 sq. ft. house is open and filled with natural light. It has vaulted ceilings, wood floors, concrete countertops, bright windows, and a large deck that looks out over the farm and the mountains to the west. Most nights, the sunset view from the deck is spectacular.

There are two queen beds in the house: one in a private downstairs bedroom, and one in an open loft bedroom above the living area. (The peak of the loft bedroom is just over 6 feet, so taller guests might be more comfortable in the downstairs bedroom.) There is also a full-size futon in the living area that can be made up to accommodate an additional two guests.

The house has wifi and a "Smart TV" (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, HBO, etc. streaming for your devices). There is no cable/live TV nor DVD. We also have small portable speakers so you can listen to music indoors and out.

Outside, there is a large deck with a sectional for lounging, and a table and chairs where you can enjoy a meal. We have a propane grill set up, and our pasture-raised meat for sale, if you'd like to prepare your own farm-to-table dinner. The yard has a fire pit and seating, as well as room for yard games.

The house is located 3 miles down a well-maintained dirt road. It is a 10-15 minute drive to Bennington where you'll find dining, shops, and groceries, and a 25-30 minute drive to Manchester.

The Schoolhouse looks out over our family's 4th-generation farm—5th if you count shepherds under the age of 5. We use no chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, etc.) on the land. We practice regenerative agriculture—using our sheep, chickens, turkeys, bees, and perennial fruit and forage crops to make sure our farm's ecosystems and animals remain fed, protected, strong, and resilient. If you're interested in regenerative agriculture (aka carbon farming)—and if time allows—we'd be happy to give you a tour of our farm and practices. Guests will have access to the whole Schoolhouse and its surrounding yard. We can also direct you to some scenic trail walks (with views of the Green Mountains) throughout the farm.

The Schoolhouse is a private building with its own parking and driveway. It is a comfortable house with modern amenities, but we do want people to expect to hear the sights and sounds of a working farm. You'll occasionally hear tractors, sheep, chickens, turkeys, and a donkey in the distance. And all kinds of wildlife as well.

Why Caroline McDougall chose Shaftsbury

My Great-grandfather bought the Schoolhouse just after it closed in 1936. It was one of several one-room, rural schoolhouses in our little town of Shaftsbury. Since my family has owned it, it's housed farmhands, friends, and family members, but hadn't had a major update since the 1940s.

Starting in 2015, we began the process of renovating and reimagining this space for the next phase of its life on the farm. We took the building down to its original frame and rebuilt from there, vaulting the ceiling and exposing the beams as we went. The project took us two years to complete and we began welcoming guests in the summer of 2017. It's been a hit! We are delighted to share this special place with folks from all over the world.

What makes this cottage unique

The Schoolhouse is an incredible mix of old and new. We've kept the farm-cottage feel, and married it to a contemporary design, efficient building materials, fixtures, appliances, and heating. You're welcome to explore our 270 acre property of open fields, forest, and trails. And, if you're interested in meeting our flock of sheep, chickens, bees, and learning more about our regenerative land management, we'd be happy to give you a tour. This is a secluded, peaceful place to relax in the countryside, with dining, recreation, and activities within 15-30 minutes. Outside, the house has sweeping views overlooking our hillside farm, and the Green Mountains surrounding it.
