About Penny Mason
I have been a 'local' for 40 years. I recently retired from my career as the librarian at the Joshua Tree Library. My husband Tim is also a long time local, retired electrician and avid hiker and climber. Together we can give you the inside info on the BEST there is to see and do in the magical Mojave!! We have enjoyed our totally unique home, which Tim built, for the past 8 years. We have experienced first hand the relaxing, comfortable and rejuvenating environment here and we are delighted to share this incredible Joshua Tree experience with you.
Penny Mason purchased this House in 2008
Why Penny Mason chose Joshua Tree
My husband, an electrician, built this unique custom home on 2.9 acres when he retired. He specifically chose this property for it's views of the hills of Joshua Tree National Park, for the dark of the night skies, the beautiful sunrises and sunsets and the peaceful quiet neighborhood.
What makes this House unique
Quail Haven is secluded from the touristy areas of Joshua Tree without being out in the hinterlands! Close to downtown and all Joshua Tree attractions but just enough off the beaten path to allow guests to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the desert as it is for locals.

Quail Haven Heaven
Quail Haven was a fabulous place for 3 sisters from 3 corners of the U.S. to reconnect and relax. We enjoyed exploring Joshua Tree National Park during the day, and enjoyed the desert views at Quail Haven in the evening. The house was filled with amenities like a hot tub, a telescope for star viewing, a humming bird feeder filled to overflowing with gorgeous humming birds, interesting artwork and books. The list goes on. Very charming place. We could all live there. Watching the sun set from the porch in the evening was stunning!
Clean, well equipped!
We felt very welcomed by our gracious hosts at Quail Haven. It was a perfect location and a beautiful place.
Fabulous Home in True Desert
Our family loved Quail Haven. My husband and I stayed for eight nights with our 16 year old son and 13 year old daughter.
The house is in beautiful condition and is tastefully decorated. The showers are excellent and the heated floors kept the house warm even when temperatures dipped into the 30s. The house is very well equipped-- there are abundant, excellent towels for example, which one cannot necessarily expect in a rental. Outside, hot tub is fabulous. We enjoyed it at night, under the stars. We also enjoyed the zero gravity recliners-- we watched a truly memorable sunset reclining together, under quilts, as the cool evening set in.
My husband and I enjoyed coffee outside every morning with Gambel's quails, black throated sparrows, lesser goldfinches, and-- amazingly-- a Costa's hummingbird who joined us near the table on the hummingbird feeder.
There is a stunning view of a snow capped mountain visible from the living room and outside. This was a small, unexpected bonus that I just loved. The windows offer plenty of light inside and great views of the mountains. It took me a few nights to adjust to that there aren't shades on the living room windows, but you are truly in the desert-- there's no house nearby and no need for shades there.
Penny, the owner, is extremely welcoming, helpful and responsive.
My family loved our stay at Quail Haven. I never imagined that I would love being in the desert but I grew very attached to it during our stay here.
We stayed at Quail Haven during December 28-30 and we had a great time. It is a great spacious, comfortable, clean and beautiful home. We enjoyed the indoors space with it's big kitchen, the dining area with huge windows to enjoy bird watching as well as the outdoor space with gas grill, fire pit, jacuzzi, telescope! Penny was very quick to respond and very accomodating. Overall a great home to relax and spend quality time with family.
Clean, organized, relaxing place
This is a well thought out house that is of new construction.
My wife, little one, and myself stayed three nights to do some hiking in JT. The house location is pleasantly secluded but close enough to the park. We were able to use the new, clean, hot tub one night and the fire ring another... the most amazing stars ever.
The owners put a lot of thought into this house and seem to be very accommodating. They left a bag of coffee out for us and a little toy rabbit (they new we had a little one). They also let us use the high chair and pack-n-play so we didn’t have to pack ours. Again, all extremely clean...
A Wonderful Property at Joshua Tree
Quail Haven is indeed a haven. One of the cleanest, nicely appointed, well equipped and stocked VRBO's we have stayed in. Everything from spa towels to olive oil, a selection of spices, and hiking guides. Really, just the best! Private, but very close to the center of Joshua Tree and the Western Entrance to the park. Don't miss the Noah Purifoy Sculpture Garden and another Sculpture Garden which are both nearby. We did have to ask for a little assistance with the television, but the owner was quick to respond. We had some problems but finally figured out how to open the futon in the second bedroom. Directions for that maybe should be included in the very complete book of instructions that the owners have put together. The only thing we were not crazy about was the water bed in the master bedroom. If you like water beds, no problem, but we are not fans. Sadly, that may preclude another visit to this very desirable property.
We are so glad to hear that you had a positive experience staying at Quail Haven and enjoyed your stay in Joshua Tree! The Noah Purifoy Museum is definitely a highlight of the area. We can certainly add futon instructions to the Guest Manual. We are sorry you didn't feel the softside waveless mattress was a benefit.
A softside mattress has layers of padding and quilting that dampen and isolate the water-feel, yet many people report health benefits and a feeling of general well being as a result of sleeping on a softside waterbed.
Located in Joshua Tree, the gateway to Joshua Tree National Park. Internationally renown for it’s world class rock climbing, hiking and unusual landscapes and fauna Joshua Tree National Park is truly a unique travel experience.
