A charming colonial era cottage circa 1760, simply refurbished to retain its historical identity as The Dowell House. Nestled in private acreage with a small working vineyard and views of the rolling hills and mountains of Central Virginia, just twenty five minutes from the University of Virginia, James Madison's Montpelier or Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Great access to many local wineries, hiking trails and the Shenandoah National Forest. This delightful one and a half story cottage has two bedrooms, original flooring and batten doors, two stone fireplaces and exposed timber beams. A recent addition added the modern comforts of a full kitchen, shower bathroom and laundry. Come relax on the front porch and enjoy the peaceful setting after a day of hiking, history tours or sampling local offerings.

We’re ready to move in!
I’m hesitant to write a review, because we don’t want to ever have this great place booked the next time we head to Charlottesville. We adored the house - pictures are exactly what it looks like - plus it’s in a really pretty, quiet setting - and, you don’t even see the main house when you’re in the house. Beautiful floors, doors and furniture. Great new kitchen and bathroom. The only thing I would advise- is if you have really bad knees or stairs are tough, to be aware that the stairs are steep and the bathroom and bedroom are not on the same floor. But - otherwise - we’re totally in love with this house!! Can’t wait to come back!
Best Kept Secret in Barboursville
Bob and Sue have lovingly spent time and energy on every detail of this wonderful home. Walking in is like being transported to a different time ... but the home also features all the modern conveniences that make your time here feel like a luxury. Every appliance is new and the touches are so thoughtful and fine. Close to town, but far enough that you feel immersed in nature, from the trickling creek to the deer (spy the white one?) to the turkeys that appear on the horizon. Don't miss it or tell too many folks about it ... we want to stay here again soon!
