About Doug & Diane Walkley
A well traveled couple with too many trips to Europe to count. Adventurous experiences traveling in the '70s in a VW Van through Mexico, traversing Costa Rica in search of exotic birds and canoeing down branches of the Amazon in Ecuador. In real life: a nurse and CFO now retired from big city life returning to small town and country living.
Doug & Diane Walkley purchased this House in 2017
Why Doug & Diane Walkley chose Regional District of Nanaimo
Yearning for BC, water, fresh air, friendly people and a village big enough to meet your every need. Why not choose Gabriola Island? We were very fortunate to find one of the very few executive homes on the ocean. From the moment we were shown this home, the view beyond and the stairwell to the ocean floor, we knew it had to be ours... and yours for select portions of the year.
What makes this House unique
The home is back to nature for sure, yet at the same time provides all the creature comforts of home and more. Whether its walking the many established trails on the Island or simply sitting in front of a warm fire as you gaze out to the ocean, this place sends you home rejuvenated and refreshed.

Our fabulous 50th anniversary!
We chose Doug and Diane’s home as the perfect place to celebrate our 50th anniversary with our family - and perfect it was! In a way, the whole experience is summarized in the feeling you get when you walk through the front door and into the living room to see the ocean spread out before you. We enjoyed that view waking in the morning, as we took our morning coffee on the patio, as we read our books on any one of the patio, garden swing, Emily Carr deck or on the rocks below. The other thing that defined our stay was that Doug and Diane had prepared a wonderful welcome in the dining room with a large table, set for 12, festooned with ribbons and, in the centre, a gift basket with wine, cheese, crackers, anniversary teacups, a card and other gifts. The neverending spectacular views combined with this personal and enthusiastic welcome made this celebration one that can never be duplicated. Many many other things were revealed throughout the week - a crib and high chair for our 14 month old granddaughter, music from the 60s when we were married, Trivial Pursuit cards at the table. The kitchen was very well equipped and was perfectly designed for 12 people (all cooks!) living together - lots of room to move around in. Little notes, sheets of instruction and labels made our transition to this temporary home very easy. We are a family of musicians and the living room and patio were often used for playing. Our 15 year old granddaughter enjoyed the nearly 360 view of the ocean from the Emily Carr deck as her personal music studio. There were lots of places to be together and lots to find solitude. The three kayaks got a lot of use. The coves and rock galleries were thoroughly explored from the water. The cottage is perfectly located close to almost everything on Gabriola - the beautiful twin beaches, the town centre with grocery store, BC liquor store, coffee shop, etc, Saturday market, really great local restaurants like the Woodfire. Doug and Diane had modified the layout of the bedrooms to suit our needs - an office was converted to a perfect bedroom for one granddaughter and a TV room became a bedroom for our daughter and son-in-law. Other rooms were perfect as they were - we loved the luxury of the master bedroom and Alec was completely taken with the very special Harry Potter room. Every member of our family said, over and over, that this was the perfect holiday - relaxing and exhilirating, decadent and completely comfortable.
Our family has stayed in VRBO's all over the world but this one was our favorite. Hard to know where to start -- first, the island itself is pretty magical. You access by a ferry and enter a small world of terrific, welcoming people and an island populated by artists, deer and friends you never knew you had. The house is close to the ferry, up a hill and down a side road - and when you open the front door, the extraordinary view greets you. It is truly breathtaking. Doug and Diane are great hosts - we had a welcoming basket waiting and the house is beautifully laid out with directions everywhere. The rooms were lovely and the kitchen perfectly equipped. The stairs leading to the water are spectacular - especially to linger on at sunset. We saw an otter, a few seals, multiple bald eagles (including an immature one who visited often) and even a pileated woodpecker.
When we could pull ourselves away from the view and the comfort of the house, we hiked all over, exploring beaches and parks, went to the farmer's market, went fishing (also amazing), took a whale watching trip from Nanaimo and made a special visit to some of the artists
homes (we called a little in advance).
All in all -- it was really magical. We are already trying to figure out when we can return.
Many, many thanks to Doug and Diane.
Beautiful location / wonderful Stay
The views were beautiful. The house was large and perfect place to enjoy Christmas , we loved all the personal touches left my the owners .
Very accommodating guests. Despite tough weather conditions over Christmas this year, these guests had nary a complaint.
Our family spent Thanksgiving weekend at this beautiful property. The house is lovely and extremely comfortable.(nice gas fireplace in living room for chilly fall nights) The view is spectacular...always lots to watch out on the water. The kitchen is really well designed and very well provisioned making it perfect for preparing a Thanksgiving dinner. The hosts were really helpful providing lots of information on things to do on the island and generously left wine and Nanaimo bars and a beautifully set table for Thanksgiving dinner...also loved the caramels & Werther's! We loved Gabriola Island too. We enjoyed beautiful beach and forest walks, nice restaurants, the farmer's market, the cidery, and the Artists Studio Tour. The dogs loved the island too! We will definitely be back!
Just spectacular! Beautiful home complete with stunning, mesmerizing views of the water.
Loved every minute and will definitely be back to Gabriola soon!
Simply a beautiful house in an amazing location. Well worth the drive!
From the moment we walked into this amazing house on Gabriola Island we were blown away by the view and the setting. The house is wonderfully appointed and it was spotless. We were a group of 7 and the house was perfect for all our needs. You can't beat the back patio BBQ nor the epic sunsets every evening. The house is close to some great shops, two food markets, two liquor stores, a library and a few nice places to eat. Don't miss the sunday farmers/artists market. The house has a very nice TV with tons of channels...but we never turned it on. With that view you just don't need it. Next trip we will definitely remember to bring our mountain bikes. We plan to come back again.
