We arrived at this property to find it uncleaned - squalid and grimy. As a result we had to spend a day and a half cleaning this entire house to any adequate satisfaction.
Worse still when we called the owner - Mark Andrews - about this , he called a friend who occasionally cleans the property to come clean the house but when she arrived she only had an hour to spare. More so she was equally horrified and angry at the state the house had been left in for any guests arrival. She even called the owners herself to say it was filthy and disgusting and that they needed to do something about it.
Just to mention a few of the awful things we as paying guests were faced with on our immediate arrival:
Filthy terrace with cigarette butts
Full cigarette ash trays
Grimy greasy oven with old food
Dirty linen on the beds with blood on them
Washing up left in sink
Floors not swept or mopped
Dust and dead flies
No instructions were left of what to do with all the stuff. No cleaning materials and utterly worn out cleaning appliances to work with.
We also found an uncovered live fuse board in the bedroom and leaking gas cylinder in the kitchen.
Worse still when all this was brought to the owners attention he agreed that it was inadequate but failed to take any adequate measures.
When finally he did come to see us on the second last day of our visit he acted like it was nothing serious, suggesting he would waiver the cleaning fee despite the fact that we had done all the cleaning and really it was him that owed us!
When we suggested this was all unacceptable he acted as an entirely irresponsible business owner saying it was not his fault, that someone let him down.
We then asked him why when we notified him of all this he didn’t take action, but he merely shrugged this all off, even saying it didn’t really matter, it was all over. He did not seemed to care that he had severely disrupted our holiday. And even suggested that our standards were too high!
As such he behaved in an utterly irresponsible and disrespectful manner towards us as his guests. He did not seem to care that his attitude towards his business cost us a day and a half of our holiday in cleaning his house! He was rude, bullying, highly inconsiderate and arrogant. It was truly shocking.
We are very shocked that having booked a holiday through the reputable Home Away company that we would have the misfortune to meet such a terrible irresponsible owner.
Large, quirky property in a beautiful area
The accommodation is situated in a beautiful area of France and provides plenty of room for large family, or other gatherings. There are several bedrooms with two or more beds and most bedrooms enjoy ensuite bathrooms (only one toilet ensuite), mostly with showers but some with a bath/shower. The garden is large and there are sufficient places to sit in or out of the sun. The balcony is a pleasant place to sit, with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside and towards the Roche de Vergisson. There is a lot of room for parking cars.
The accommodation is built on the side of a hill, is on three floors and quite quirky in design. All of the living rooms are of a good size, although the weather was so good during our stay that we did not need to use them all. There was quite a lot of clutter around the house and this must make the house almost impossible to clean. When we arrived, the house was not perfectly clean after the previous visitors. Most of the facilities we needed for 14 of us were available but there were very few tumblers for drinks – plenty of very small glasses but almost no larger ones.
In the garden, there was no provision of sun-loungers – we did find some and used them but they belonged to the person who lives in the other house on the plot! There were actually none provided at the property that we could find. In addition, several of the plastic seats for sitting around the garden tables were weak, brittle and, in a couple of cases, dangerous.
None of these issues spoilt our holiday in any way. We thoroughly enjoyed the immediate surroundings and the wider local area and the size and layout of the accommodation was good for us. We enjoyed meeting the owner, Mark Andrews, who was very interesting about the area and seemed to be a very nice man. The cyclists, swimmers, wine drinkers and walkers in our party very much enjoyed the area with plenty of opportunities for all of these activities nearby.
We don’t usually return to areas or properties but we might make an exception in this case!
I enjoyedreading your appréciation, you should have told me you needed some more glasses.yes i need to throw away a couple of chairs.I enjoyed meeting you And your family ,Mak
