Built by a local businessman and community leader in the 70’s so his family could enjoy time at the beach, Herbie’s House is a charming three bedroom, 2 ½ bath cottage with a spectacular oceanfront setting. A modified a-frame design, Herbie wanted the house to be cozy with comfortable bedrooms and spacious common rooms but with a real focus on the outdoors. The main deck off the living room provides glorious sunrise watching, comfortable sunbathing during the day and a delightful end-of-day gathering place to enjoy the unique light on the ocean as the sun departs. Lower decks lead to a grass covered area, ideal for lawn games and a sandy area with a horseshoe pit. Walk through the gate and you are at the stairs leading to an uncrowded beach for walking, swimming, tanning, shelling, fishing and general relaxing. All this a short 15 minute drive from downtown St. Augustine with all the restaurants, shopping and historical sights it has to offer.
Herbie wanted to maximize the opportunity for his family and friends to interact so he designed an open living room, kitchen, dining area with high ceilings and big windows to allow everyone to have an ocean view – even when fixing dinner, washing dishes or watching TV. Recently updated with a 55” TV, new floors, new windows and a new deck, this area will be where everyone “lives” when they are not outside.
Originally two rooms (one for each of Herbie’s children), the center wall has been taken down to make room for a new king size bed and 40” TV. Two large closets and two wicker dressers provide ample space to store clothes and the short distance down the hallway makes this bedroom at the backside of the house a comfortable retreat from the “action” of the living room.
2nd Floor Bathroom
As with all beach cottages, space is at a premium but the main bathroom between the living area and the master bedroom is a full bath with tub, shower, toilet and sink. Recently refreshed with new paint and lighting, the bathroom has all that is needed for a vacation at the beach.
A spiral staircase off the living area, leads to a third floor bedroom. Originally, the master bedroom, the room has been converted into a bunkroom with new twin over full and twin over twin beds. A full size lower bunk was included in case two adults are using this bedroom.
3rd Floor Bathroom
The 3rd floor bathroom is small but complete with a sink, toilet and unique shower created by the sloping a-frame roof. No doubt a little tight for most adults, the shower will be a fun place to clean up for the kids who will most often be using this room. However, adults will be unable to resist the temptation to get their picture taken (clothed of course) standing in the tight space.
Lower Bedroom/Sitting Area
A third large bedroom is on the first floor. This room is not accessible directly from inside the house and requires entry through either the outside lower deck door or the garage. However, once inside guests find an outstanding oceanfront view through new large windows, a queen size bed and a second TV viewing/sitting area complete with a 55” TV with DVD player.
This bedroom also has a small half bath.
