Explore Tokyo from the heart of Omotesando and Harajuku! You will be a 1-minute walk to Omotesando. You will be a 5-minute walk to Harajuku. Omotesando subway station is a 2-minute walk. You will be less than 5 minutes by subway to Shibuya and Shinjuku. The entire two-floor house is yours. You will have complete privacy - this is a house, not an apartment. We are very family & child friendly.
You won't believe the location of the house once you arrive - it's like living in a hidden residential village right off the Champs-Élysées - you're literally steps from the best shopping, sight-seeing, and dining in Tokyo. If you had kids, this is a very big deal - just park the stroller in front of the house on the porch, and load the kids up when you want to go out. No folding or storing the stroller, or stairs to carry it up and down. You don't even need to worry about taxis or subways most of the time because everything you want to see is a simple short walk away.
Our house was originally built in the early 1960’s, right before the Tokyo Olympics. While retaining the original character of post-war Japan, we completely remodeled and retrofitted our house with the latest in technology, building techniques, and earthquake safety in 2011. Our two-story restored traditional Japanese house is a unique find that is perfect for a family or friends making an extended visit to Tokyo. You can enjoy the ambiance of a traditional Japanese house while enjoying a modern American-style bathroom and kitchen, both modern Western and traditional Japanese-style bedding options, and a large sunny balcony.
Our house is in the center of the Omotesando-Harajuku-Aoyama area, widely considered the best neighborhood of Tokyo for living and dining. A famous Kyoto-style coffee and tea house is next door, as are world-class boutiques on tree-lined Omotesando. Michelin-starred restaurants sit next-door to mom and pop eateries frequented by locals, and the full range of convenience stores for which Japan is rightfully famous for are nearby, with a 7-11, Lawson, and a Family Mart all within a 300 foot radius. The 7-11 has an ATM which accepts almost all foreign-issued ATM cards, most with no handling fees. The house is 1 min to the nearest 7-11, 3 min to the Omotesando Hills shopping complex, and 2 min to Omotesando subway station. Meiji-Jingumae subway station is 5 min away, and JR Harajuku station is 10 minutes. You will be in both the most desirable area of Tokyo and also one of the best connected via public transit.
Upon entering the house, you will find a granite entry and storage for almost three dozen pairs of shoes. Stepping inside, the living room is equipped with a Toshiba HDTV with a DVD player, an AppleTV, and a Google ChromeCast. A full kitchen with a Bertazzoni gas burning stove, Le Crueset pots and pans, a full size Maytag convection oven (big enough to fit a Thankgiving turkey), a stainless steel Sears Kenmore dishwasher, a Panasonic microwave, a Zojirushi rice cooker, a coffee maker, and a full size Hitachi Japanese-style refrigerator add to the convenience of making our house your extended home away from home.
The bathroom is floored with granite and marble, with a fully automatic toilet (with English labeling and a self-opening and closing automatic lid), and has both a full-size glass-enclosed shower and a full-sized bath tub that can comfortably fit a six-foot-tall adult. A Hitachi combination automatic washer and dryer that both washes AND dries clothes in one cycle without having to move the clothes adds to the convenience. We provide towels, detergent, and fabric softener for your stay.
When you step up the original but fully restored staircase and open the shoji paper screen doors, you will find a large but cozy traditional Japanese-style master suite, complete with a separate tatami mat room and an exposed wood ceiling with ceiling fan and the original woodwork preserved. Two large closets with two levels of storage are perfect for an extended stay. The master suite can be separated into two separate spaces using removable Japanese "shoji" style divider doors installed in the room. There is also a sun room on the second floor, which can be used as another bedroom or an office, depending on your needs. This room get excellent sun and looks out onto the balcony and a small street below. All rooms open onto the expansive balcony, which offers an open air view of the neighborhood from which to relax or entertain friends.
If you have young children, you will enjoy the fact that you can take them for a walk along Omotesando in their strollers by just walking out the front door, without having to hassle with small and expensive taxis or crowded subways, many stations of which lack elevators and ramps. We have also recently child-proofed many areas of the house. There is a Lascal Avant retractable child gate on the first floor that can be used to prevent access to the stairs and entry way. At the top of the stairs, there is a Richell swinging wooden gate that prevents access to the stairs from the master bedroom. Both gates can swing or retract completely out of the way when not in use.
Every room in the house is equipped with modern and efficient air conditioning and heating units. The house is also equipped with a Swiss-made hospital-grade air scrubber from IQ Air, to make your stay as pleasant and allergen-free as possible.
The house has a gigabit optical fiber network connection with 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi. We also include a SoftBank 4G LTE wireless hotspot.
A bit about earthquake safety: our neighborhood sits on the highest and most solid bedrock in Tokyo; it is literally rock solid and over 100 feet above sea level. The house was completely retrofitted for quake resistance in February of 2011 and suffered absolutely no damage in the March 2011 quake. The area is also exempt from any power rationing in emergencies, probably due to the large diplomatic presence in the area.
Our house can accommodate six adults comfortably. We can fit a mix of adults and children up to eight people. We do not feel that the house can provide a good experience to groups over eight, and therefore we do not take groups over eight.
Our bedding is arranged as follows:
BEDROOM ONE: Master Suite
One Queen Bed (200cm x 160cm)
Two Japanese-style futons (210cm x 100cm each)
BEDROOM TWO: Sun Room
One Single Bed (200cm x 80cm) OR one Queen Bed (200cm x 160cm)
We can accommodate an extra Queen Size (200cm x 160cm) Air Mattress on the first floor, but this is not recommended.
Please understand that our house is built in the traditional Japanese style. That means it is primarily built of wood and paper. Therefore, absolutely no smoking is allowed in or around the structure. If you are a smoker and cannot live without lighting up inside the home, please look elsewhere. The Japanese take the threat of fire seriously, so there are no exceptions to this rule. Absolutely no pets or animals allowed. There are also no shoes allowed inside the house, and the trash needs to be separated between recyclables and all other trash as is the custom in Japan.
Our home is professionally cleaned and managed. The entire home is professionally cleaned before and after each stay. If you are staying for more than one month, we will provide once-a-week cleaning at no additional charge.
To reiterate, guests will have the entire house to themselves. This is not a shared house. This is not an apartment. This is not a flat. This is a single-family detached house. Minimum stay is one month.
Thanks and enjoy your trip to Tokyo!
