North Carolina Waterfront Vacation... The PungoHouse
About Robert Nelson
The PungoHouse was completed in the year 2000 by a "Dream Team" of custom builders for our family. My wife, a potter, has her small studio in the lower section of the house and is inspired by the living river she watches as she works with clay. After living in the house for 18 years, we have decided to share this environment with a limited number of people. You, too, can experience a little "paradise on the Pungo River" for your next vacation getaway... book your stay today!
Why Robert Nelson chose Belhaven
You will love it! Simply put, there is no other place like the "Paradise on the Pungo" atmosphere in beautiful Dowry Creek! It truly is a hidden gem that our family is so thankful to have. Fall on the Pungo is special: Of all the seasons here on the Pungo River, Fall time offers some of the most breath-taking sunrises and sunsets, along with wonderfully mild temperatures. The air is crisp at night and warm during the days. Spring Time on the Pungo is "a rewnewal season" and a promise that summer fun is on its way! It brings LOTS of birds, and hundreds to thousands of hummingbirds (Ruby Red Throats) to the Inner Banks area. They're all amazing to watch as you sit on the porch. Winter time on the Pungo is the quiet calm season of ducks, and sometimes ice in the river that reflects the moon’s rays at night...a sight to behold…then there are the never-ending breath-taking sunsets that make you stop whatever you're doing, pour a glass of wine, sit down and feel the humbling effect of where you are! Winter is a time for the photographer, the writer, the artist, the musician to be creative...Winter on the river can be the best of the best for those of us who need a quiet place to just be still and think! Now, for those not familiar with the Intracoastal Waterway, (ICW), it's host to a parade of boats each Spring (heading north for summer) and Fall (heading south for winter) they ALL go pass the back yard of the Pungo House! (Yes, it's exciting!)
What makes this House unique
Located in beautiful Dowry Creek, the Pungo House is just 6 miles from the Town of Belhaven (4.5 mi. by water) so groceries, post office, drug stores, quaint shops and some excellent restaurants are a short drive away. Not only is this a waterfront property on the Intracoastal Waterway, but the house has wonderful living spaces, both indoors and outdoors. The Dowry Creek Marina, with "water toy" rentals and a small store, is within walking/biking distance from the house, which is a rare find in vacation rentals! The choices for daytrip sightseeing are numerous. Ferries run from Swan Quarter, NC (a 30 minute drive away) to Ocracoke Island during the summer months. (Anyone who has never been to Ocracoke for its beaches, shopping, and food are in for a treat!) The Roanoke Island, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills area of the Outer Banks is a 2 hour drive, The Morehead/Atlantic Beach area is a 2 hr. Drive. The Washington Waterfront is a 45 minute drive. Greenville is a 1 hr. drive. The Aurora fossil dig and museum is a 30 minute drive to the ferry, and a 30 minute (free) crossing. Your only problem will be trying to decide whether to stay at the Pungo House to "play" or to take one of the many daytrips from which to choose.

Beautiful home and property! Lots of room and amenities! Property manager/owner was wonderful!
Gorgeous house, nicely stocked, had an amazing time
Awesome family vacation, we caught crabs, saw dolphins, went kayaking, and relaxed by the pool
The property was amazing! The view was absolutely beautiful! We loved the humming birds and little frogs that came out nightly (they were adorable). We enjoyed relaxing in the pool, fishing off the dock and watching a movie in the home movie theater. The kids loved seeing the crabs and little fish that were seen by the dock daily. Would definitely like to go back!
Very nice place to call home for a week ❤️
Enjoyed the pool, dock and so happy to have Dowry Crrek Marina in our backyard. DCM and owner was nice enough to hook us up with a weekly rate for kayaks at the dock . It was nice to take long trips out in the kayak .
peace and quiet
The area and neighbors are very laid back and friendly. House is beautiful, with great amenities in the kitchen. Pool is wonderful. Only downside is the pier never had more than 2 1/2 feet of water around it.
Thank you for your feedback.. The depth of the water around the property can be shallow depending on the wind direction and tide. By contacting the neighborhood Dowry Creek Marina, our guests can have access to a deep water pier and boat dock.
Glad you enjoyed your stay at the PungoHouse. Regards..... Robert
I can’t say enough about the Nelson’s beautiful home. We have stayed at plenty of VBRO homes and I must say this home was beautiful yet very homey. The kitchen was by far the most well stocked of all the homes we’ve stayed in. How wonderful it was to sit by the beautiful pool and not only taken the Pungo river but also the beautiful sunrise and sunset you can take in from the same seat! The hummingbirds were such a treat and very plentiful! Robert was very efficient in checking in on us to make sure our stay was perfect. The only thing I can think of that he left out of his description of this beautiful property was all of the lovely deer that we also saw. This home is definitely out of the hustle and bustle, but at the same time it had everything you could ask for to enjoy a peaceful vacation without ever having to leave the property. We look forward to returning someday for a longer stay.
