Grindstone Island : Grindstone Island is one of the most unique places in the world. There are around 1000 residents in the summer time and about 12 hearty souls that spend the full year. Wild life abounds; there are dirt roads great for biking and walking. Potter's Beach is a fun spot to swim and picnic, as the water is warmer than most other places on the St. Lawrence. Much of the island is protected by the Thousand Islands Land Trust, so there are walking/ATV trails to many parts.
Thousand Islands Area: HISTORY: A truly fantastic place, the Thousand Islands was the playground of the rich and famous. It rivaled Newport, RI in the early 1900’s as the place to be. There were yacht races and these boats can now be seen at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton. Castles built by such men as Charles G. Emery, a partner in the American Tobacco Company. Two castles, Boldt and Singer, are now open to visitors. Boldt was the manager of the Waldrof-Astoria in NY City, while the Borne Family of Singer Sewing Machine fame built Singer Castle. A visit to the Thousand Island Museum in Clayton will put it all into prospective. Visits to these and other islands can be arranged with the various companies offering Thousand Islands boat tours.
Transportation to Grindstone Island: FAQ: What transportation is there to the Island? The best way is your own boat. Many of our guests have their own boat, which they may bring on a trailer. The nearest boat launch is on our neighbor island, Wellesley, at the New York State Park. There are boat launches in Clayton also. Please check with the Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce for advice. The next best is to rent a boat at Clayton Marina, visit their website. Wellesley Island State Park's launch is the most convenient to us.
Please Remember That Grindstone Is An Island - There Is No Bridge!
Iggy Biggy can not be reached by car!!!
There Are No Stores On The Island; It Is Remote And Private.
