Traditional Vt House, 200 years old, 4 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 7)
Enjoy your summer holiday in the small, friendly village of Jamaica, located in the West River Valley. Big garden, outdoor grill, brook, and the Jamaica State Park is just down the road with playground and swimming.
The house is on a ploughed road; it is a ten minute drive to Stratton Mountain, twenty to Bromley.
This is a traditional white frame house (built 200 years ago) full of charm and character, on a side street just off the Main Street. The big red barn is where we store the firewood and park two cars, and has a door leading into the house.
The house has four bedrooms and two and half bathrooms, all with traditional country furnishings, ideal for a family.
The house has been our family vacation home for forty years, The house is well set-up for visitors with a detailed instruction book, guide book, bird book and history book. A popular feature is the way in which the living room and the country kitchen provide one big open space. They are distinct separate areas, but are open to one another. Thus the person cooking is also a part of the group sitting in the living room or dining room.
The fire is a wood-burning stove in the living room. However, the house has an efficient oil-fired central heating system. Major investment has been made to insulate the house and keep it cosy.
The TV room provides a separate playroom.. TV has a DVD built-in.
The two bathrooms are off the kitchen. One has a shower, the other a shower and an old-fashioned claw foot tub. Upstairs is a toilet with hand basin.
A mudroom with a covered entrance off the driveway enables all sports gear to be left out of the way. The laundry room is off the kitchen, with a washer and tumble dryer.
The house can be entered by the front door, through the dining room, from the deck, by the mudroom, from the barn, or the kitchen - children love the ins and outs of the old house.
House has been lovingly maintained, is very well equipped, and retains its character. (The furnishings reflect the English background and extensive travels of the owners with pottery, paintings, and wall hangings from around the globe, but especially from Britain.)
The house has Wifi installed, and for those with ATT, cell phone reception is excellent as the relay station is nearby.
The Village of Jamaica has a range of small shops and a restaurant - and the gathering place for everyone is the Jamaica General Store which sells just about everything including Vermont cheese (and they will hold your newspapers for you.(Wall St. Journal, New York Times, Boston Globe, Brattleboro Reformer.)
The Master Bedroom is at the back of the house, has a queen size bed, ceiling fan and wash basin. It has an ante-room with a desk and wardrobe. The second back bedroom has twin beds, handbasin and ceiling fan. In front is a double room with a queen size bed plus a twin. It also has a handbasin and ceiling fan. This bedroom is connected to a small room with a single bed; this room is ideal for a child but also is comfortable for an adult.
Summer activities include mountain biking, tennis, horseback riding, hiking, swimming, canoeing. Buy fresh fruits and vegetables nearby. Enjoy antique shops, country auctions, music festivals, and discount shopping (Manchester is a major outlet center, 30 minutes away).

About E. H. DENTON
Nearly 40 years ago, this was intended as the 'retreat' from academic life in Boston. Over the years it has been our family holiday house, the children have grown up, and now the grandchildren consider it their vacation home.
E. H. DENTON purchased this House in 1976
Why E. H. DENTON chose Jamaica
This is place where you can relax- and have a group gathering or independent activities. Lots of space for each person to do their own thing. It was been a haven for artists, writers, and musicians. And it's the perfect base for skiing (downhill and cross country). (It is available a a seasonal rental in 2018-2019.)
What makes this House unique
This house has character. After a day out of doors, unwind on the deck, in front of the fire, or gather in the spacious dining room. The living room and kitchen are one large space. Children love the house, because from an early age they can be independent. They can explore the area but stay on the sidewalk, with no roads to cross. They can walk up to the library and to the general store - which are just up the road. They can also walk to the State Park which has both long and short hiking trails (good for cross country skiing) plus a sandy beach and good swimming in the West River, and scramble down to the brook as wooden steps lead down from the garden. There have also been numerous games of hide-and-seek in and around the house and barn as there are so many ins and outs. Skiers enjoy sitting round the log-burning stove, and can leave all their equipment in the mud room, out of the way. It is peaceful and quiet, yet only a short walk to shops and post office.

The perfect family ski house
Many fantastic holidays
I always like to hear from folks who have enjoyed the house and the surroundings as we do. September/October is a particularly lovely time of year. However, please note that the house sleeps a maximum of eight - it has its own septic system which cannot cope with larger numbers.
Do come back again.
Perfect Stay, year after year
Great for family get-together!
