About Clay or Kathy Hodge

Kathy and I met at Emerald Isle, NC. We love to golf and fish at the ocean. We purchased our cottage from Rosie's daughters after her passing. Rosie and Kathy were neighbors and friends for over 25 years and together enjoyed the wildlife, golf and quietness River Bend had to offer. Therfore it wasn't hard coming up with the name 'Rosie's Retreat' for the cottage. Kathy was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA but moved here in 1978. I was born and raised in Raleigh, NC and moved here in 2005. Come see why others have fallen in love with 'Rosie's Reteat' and the River Bend area.

Why Clay or Kathy Hodge chose New Bern

We love River Bend and the River Bend Golf & Country Club has been voted for the last five years the #1 Golf Course in the county. The location is very quiet, loaded with wildlife and very safe. River Bend residents are probably over 50% retirees. In the three years we've owned 'Rosie's Retreat' we've had clients stay and then buy or move into the area. Both winters we have had clients come here to get out of the cold and snow and our worst day, weather wise, we are told equals their best day back home.

What makes this cottage unique

'Rosie's Retreat' has everything most people have in their own homes. Screened in porch with gas grill, wood deck and benches for outdoor seating, bicycles, canoe availability, great walking/riding area throughout River Bend, fireplace, kitchen with all the gadgets needed, washer and dryer. When we first opened 'Rosie's Retreat' we stocked the home with all bath, kitchen & laundry needs, including condiments in the fridge so clients don't have to pack and bring those items. All we asked is if you use it up replace it for the next family that arrives (Our form of pay it forward). Oh, one last thing about staying here is all utilities and yard maintenance is included. It is the clients responsibility to get plenty of rest and relaxation and that's an order!

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Adorable home in a great neighborhood! The house could easily sleep 10 and the setting was great - right on a golf course. The house had everything you could need - fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer and a great family room. We had a great time, just wish it had been longer!

Just Like Grandmas House

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Rosie's Retreat during my brother's wedding at the Abelina Plantation. The moment we pulled up, it instantly felt like home and was even more so that way upon entering the house. It was clean, things were easy to find and our gracious hosts, Clay and Kathy checked in to make sure we had all we needed. We saw some beautiful wildlife (including the golfers on the course) and enjoyed the nightly feedings at the deer feeder. Clay and Kathy couldn't have been more welcoming or accommodating and SUPER friendly and kind. We loved our trip and stay at Rosie's Retreat and will definately be back again!!

Beautiful home in a quiet and safe neighborhood.

  • 5 of 5

When I first saw the picture of Rosie's Retreat it just pulled me in. Clay and Kathy have stocked everything you need to be able to cook, do laundry, relax, and feel like you are in your own home. Nicely decorated and the books and magazines are a nice touch. So nice to be able to do laundry and not have to haul dirty clothes home. All beds were very comfortable.

My younger son enjoyed fishing nearby and riding one of the bikes provided. We all loved the nightly deer visits, hearing the tree frogs and cicadas, and seeing all the turtles. Found some great places to eat in New Bern, including MJs in the historic district and Panichelli's pizzeria in the neighborhood.

We enjoyed meeting Clay and Kathy. We would definitely rent again if we returned to the area. We left feeling rested and happy.

Clean and convenient to New Bern

  • 5 of 5

Lovely stay at Rosie's Retreat for the National MS Society ride weekend in and around New Bern. Three bedroom, pull out couch, and two baths was plenty large enough for four adults (partners couldn't make it), one a bed.

We used the cottage only to shower and sleep so we didn't take advantage of the back porch (enclosed facing the golf course) or the kayak dock in the neighbourhood. But they sure looked fun!

We were pleased that the cottage was easy to find and get to from New Bern, our event's home base. After cycling 50-100 miles, no one was up for a trek home to shower!
