Just downriver from the Vieux Carre - the Faubourg Marigny was created as the first suburb to New Orleans’s famous French Quarter back in 1806. Faubourg Marigny was the one of City’s earliest suburbs on land subdivided from the vast plantation of one of New Orleans most colorful historical figures: Antoine Xavier Bernard Phillipe de Marigny de Mandeville. Marigny came into an enormous inheritance at a young age and is remembered for the cavalier style in which he squandered it, developing the Faubourg Marigny in his name, and introducing the game of craps to New Orleanians before the turn of the century. Back then, the Faubourg Marigny was largely populated by Creole families and immigrants, including many Germans. Designated as an official Historic District, the Faubourg Marigny is filled with Creole cottages and many ornamented shotgun dwellings; with a number of corner stores, 2‐story mixed use corner buildings, and fine Queen Anne or Eastlake style Victorian 2‐story residences. Today the Marigny is THE hot spot where locals and visitors alike flock for gourmet bistros, quick bites, bohemian bars, and authentic jazz clubs — especially along Frenchmen Street. Sidewalk musicians and brass bands add a block party vibe to the nighttime Frenchmen Art Market, which sells local artwork and hand-crafted goods. This vibrant musical enclave is the place to be, and comes alive at night. Quieter spots include Washington Square Park just across the street from the guest suites where the 2.54 acre park features lawns shaded by old mossy Spanish Oak and Magnolia trees, play structures and notable sculptural art installations.
Frenchmen Street is just a short 4 block walk over to the French Quarter so walking is best. The apartment is stocked with NOLA travel guides, maps, books, and suggestions for good walking routes. Bike rentals are available across the street in front of the park via "Blue Bikes," the New Orleans' bike share program. Or you may wish to rent a bike during your stay just around the corner at Bicycle Michaels, Alex's Bikes or A Bicycle Named Desire. Uber and LYFT ride-shares are on hand, as well as various cab services like United Cab, White Fleet or Bell Cab Co. This property has no private driveway and no parking spots reserved. All parking is street parking. Please be sure to carefully read the street parking signs. Public transportation via bus lines and streetcar lines is also nearby and easy to access.
Other things to note
When you have seen and heard enough of the ruckus on nearby Bourbon Street (about a 5 block walk from Frenchmen) — then its time to really downshift and explore NOLA life the way locals do. Immerse yourself in this historic neighborhood closest to the French Quarter called the Faubourg Marigny, and better known by locals as just “The Marigny.” Frenchmen Street is the epicenter for old and new, and where the lines between locals and tourists are blurred. Everyone here is having a grand time!
