By the early 1900’s Tryon was a bustling village drawing the attention of the movers and the shakers of that time. The likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, George Gershwin, Lady Astor and David Niven among others retreated to our area. It soon became a mecca for artists seeking the beauty, quiet solitude and temperate climate that Tryon became known for. Built in the late 1920’s Waller Cottage was home to such an artist, George C. Aide. In his book Paris in Tryon, Michael McCue had this to say about Waller Cottage: “The great stock market crash occurred in the autumn of 1929, which caused more attractive rentals to become available in the Tryon market. By the next spring the Aids were living in the heart of Tryon at the Waller Cottage on Lyncourt Drive. It is just off Melrose Avenue, then the favorite street of artists and intellectuals. Old timers can remember when on almost any nice day one could spot some artist out on Melrose Avenue painting the scenery plein air. The Aids’ home was just a block from Oak Hall Hotel and Lanier Library in the center of Tryon’s active social life.”
While retaining all the charm of yesteryear Waller Cottage was brought into the 21st century with an attentive remodel. All the modern comforts abound in this gem of a property; gourmet kitchen, custom tile work with heated flooring, office with computer and printer, exterior sound system, multiple fireplaces (gas and wood burning), Charter Spectrum Network and Wi-Fi to name just a few. Attention to detail was given when furnishing the home, small touches that will make you feel right at home immediately; comfortable mattresses and bedding, plush towels, well equipped kitchen, new HE washer and dryer, plenty of comfy seating in the great room and a separate living room for quiet conversation. Out of doors you’ll find a to die for sprawling front porch outfitted with vintage wicker furniture. The patio out back will remind you of a Charleston garden with vintage wrought iron settees and dining set. An adorable corner pergola is straight out of a romance novel. Both spaces are equipped with exterior speakers to further set the mood and a gas grill makes al fresco dining a breeze.
As an architectural buff’s dream, Waller Cottage will arouse the imagination of the times that were had in this great old dame. Come see all that our area has to offer and begin making memories of your own by calling Waller Cottage your home away from home.
