About the property

House, 6 Bedrooms, 5 Baths, (Sleeps 12)

Location, Location, Location! The best of all worlds! Come enjoy our beautiful victorian home previously operated as a Bed & Breakfast. We are located one block from the beach near 6th Street, which houses one of the few public bathrooms on the boardwalk as well as the Civic Center, where the fireworks take place on the 4th of July and New Years Eve!

Walk the short distance to the beach - turn right and you enjoy the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk complete with Gillian's Amusement Park & Water Park at your fingertips - turn left and leave the hustle and bustle behind to relax on a more family-oriented, low key beach! Families with kids won't mind a quick trip to the boardwalk when the kids are anxious to get moving! We are also a very short walking distance from the town and local restaurants. We have off-street parking available, but at this location, you'll be able to forget about the car for the week!

When it's time to relax, walk home and shower in our outdoor shower before heading inside to 6 private bedrooms and 5 baths where there is plenty of room for large families to enjoy time together while still being able to get some 'alone time', a much needed reprieve on busy family vacations! The house is beautifully decorated, completely stocked with all the necessities including cable tv with premium movie channels, free domestic long distance and free wireless internet access, and boasts a gorgeous newly carpeted wrap-around porch complete with wicker furniture and new awnings, perfect for family dinners, relaxing, and watching the world go by! We love our time at our 'Victorian Lady' and are sure you will too!

Our Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

We have been staying here for a week in August since 1999, and each year there are 10-12 of us, four adult sisters and our families sharing the house comfortably. Obviously, we love the house, its location and the responsiveness of the owners. Walking distance (one block) from the Boardwalk and beach, and a mere three blocks to downtown shops and Farmers’ Market make it an ideal location. The best feature is, obviously, that wonderful porch – it is like having two extra rooms, no matter what the weather. In addition to the porch, some of our best times have been around the dining room table, which fits all of us! We hope to keep coming back for many, many years!

Very deceptive photos!

  • 2 of 5

This house looks fine in the photos, but the reality is not so fine. What was once a beautiful Victorian B & B, in now a badly maintained and not so clean place in dire need of updates and TLC. It's heartbreaking to think of how this place must have looked in its heyday compared to how it looks now. The shag carpeting throughout the house looks as if it hasn't been steam cleaned in several years. Many pieces of furniture have stains on them and the wallpaper is peeling in every room. There are bizarre things in the bedrooms, like a bathtub in the middle of a carpeted area. There is no central AC (obviously since it's an old house), and the window units are so loud, my poor husband, who is hard-of-hearing, heard very little of what was going on around him. The kitchen floor was sticky from the day we arrived.

Our bedroom had the only first floor bathroom, so in order for anyone to use it, it was necessary to walk through our bedroom. Speaking of our bedroom, the blinds were so dusty and dirty, I was afraid of what would come raining down on us if we opened them. The lamps were coated with dust as well. The front of a dresser drawer came off in my hands when I tried to open it (this also happened with some doorknobs). There was mold in our shower and, worst of all, I found pieces of red and black hair in our shower (my husband and I are fully gray-haired), and we were the only ones using it.

The wraparound front porch was a nice place to sit, and the stained glass windows on the wall going up the staircase were gorgeous. The house is very close to the beach, which I suppose is why the owners can get away with the steep rental fees they charge. They must be raking in the money; it's too bad they don't think it's important to reinvest it in restoring the house.

I would NOT stay here again, and I'm being generous with a two-star rating.

Great location, but tired property in need of major maintenance and updating

  • 2 of 5

We had high hopes for the Victorian Lady. There are very few 6+ bedroom single family homes in OC capable of hosting a large family, and this seemed like a great fit. The location and size of the house are great, but the positives end there. Unfortunately, what was likely once a lovely home now suffers from deferred maintenance and lack of upkeep. From the moment we arrived, we noticed peeling wallpaper and paint, door knobs literally falling off in our hands as we opened doors, bedroom doors that wouldn't stay shut, mold in the bathroom, and dust on surfaces and windowsills. Also, the bathrooms are oddly arranged (e.g. bathtub in the middle of a carpeted bedroom).

Also note that the VRBO description leaves out a key detail about the washer and dryer - they are coin operated! This was an unwelcome surprise, requiring a scramble to find quarters to wash the kids' clothes and bathing suits. We found this odd and really unacceptable for a home in this price range.

Finally, a word to the wise if you plan on renting here: be sure to photograph and document the condition of the home upon arrival. We made the mistake of going with the flow and accepting the house for what it was, only to have part of our security deposit held for "damage" that truly existed when we arrived. I also recommend cleaning the home yourself instead of relying on their cleaning service. We were told cleaning was included, and thus didn't clean the home fully upon departure. This was also used as an excuse to hold part of the security deposit, even though the house was not terribly clean to begin with and wasn't left in bad condition.

Unfair, and unfortunate. Our group has stayed at many rental properties around the world and has never had issues, problems, or any security deposit monies held. Sadly, we would not stay here again.

Great week at the beach!

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for us! The house was clean, lovely and comfortable. The kids loved the stained glass window and every morning raced to see the rainbow colors the sun made on the stairs. Plenty of room for the kids to watch DVDs while the adults talked in the dining room or relaxed on the porch in the evenings. The owners were great about answering questions and offering suggestions. The beach was very close so popping back to the house for a forgotten toy or towel or for afternoon naps and lunch was easy. The large front porch was perfect for relaxing after a great day at the beach. I highly recommend this house for your summer vacation!
