We loved our stay in the rainforest. Very remote but well worth the drive.
Kelly, so glad you enjoyed your stay at the Treetops Guest House at our Better in Belize Eco Village.
Hope you had a safe journey home and thanks for being wonderful guests.
Interesting stay in the Jungle
Our 2 night stay at TreeTops was an interesting experience; some good, some not so good.
There was lots of great information provided in advance on how to get to Better in Belize and activities to do while we were there.
We informed HomeAway that we would arrive at 3 p.m. and were given good instructions where to go. We arrived on time and nobody was there to welcome us or sign us in.
A nice neighbour showed us where TreeTops was and the key had been left in the door.
The person who was supposed to greet us had some other emergency and showed up a few hours later. He gave us a great overview of the cabin and how to use things.
The cabin is very nice and comfortable. The kitchen needs small sharp knives and a big cutting board, otherwise well appointed. We enjoyed sitting on the deck in the evening and listening to the jungle sounds and howler monkeys.
One day we hiked down the road to the river and back up which was quite strenuous but good.
One thing that made us a little uncomfortable was the advice from several people on site not to go out after dusk on the roads because of the danger of venomous snakes. It made us refrain from hiking in the woods even during the day.
We unfortunately had to cut our visit short by one day due to a family emergency at home.
We had hoped to do the pontoon boat cruise but had to cancel that.
We had a 4 wheel drive vehicle - definitely a good vehicle to have for the 40 minute bumpy ride from the nearest village as well as getting around in Better in Belize.
Glad the great info we provided in advance about Better in Belize and activities in our area pleased you. The day you arrived our caretaker, Jorge, had a family emergency and was delayed in greeting you. Jorge had left the keys in the front door to Tree Tops so that your access to the cabin was assured. Our neighbours were aware of your arrival and provided a great back-up plan. I'm sure you respect and understand how family emergencies can cause an otherwise fine plan to go haywire since you, too, had a family emergency and had to cut your Belize vacation short and return to Canada.
We do not know to whom you spoke about snakes. However, you allowed yourselves to be led by fear-mongering. To have refrained from hiking in the woods in Belize for fear of snakes is like refraining from hiking in the woods in Canada for fear of raccoons.....or bears.....or rattlesnakes....or coyotes. Or, to go for a seaside vacation in Florida and not go swimming in the ocean for fear of sharks or jelly fish. Instead of just sitting on the deck at Tree Tops and hearing the howler monkeys, you could have actually seen them in action in the tree tops throughout the community including Rainbow's Roost, our spectacular ridge view lookout.
As for the road from Benque Viejo to Better in Belize, the last-clocked trip time was 20 minutes. We do advise everyone to rent a 4-wheel drive as the road (as with many roads in Belize) is gravel and has its twists and turns and bumps. It is certainly not the I-75 or Highway 401. :-) Traffic jams consist of cows on the road.
The approximately 5-mile network of roads throughout Better in Belize has just undergone three weeks of major maintenance with work commencing along Forest Hill Drive, a scenic crossroad that leads to 3 beautiful areas in our community - the waterfront lots and homes along Riverview Drive, the rainforest lots along Parrot's Cove and the splendid 6-mile long Vaca Lake that straddles our vibrant Belize eco-village. Lovely areas to wander, hike, walk, birdwatch, and enjoy nature.
We thank you for coming and sorry that you
had to cut your vacation short due to your family emergency.
