Meh...overpriced and not well kept
Overall, the property was ok. If it had been cheaper I probably wouldn't have a complaint as this is a historical town with old buildings. However, it was not cheap and I expected a bit better for what we paid. The overall property is old and it has a lot of paint to cover up the larger issue of repairs needed. The floors are all uneven and many of the boards feel like they are going to give and send you through to the bottom. Those with young children...look elsewhere. There was a large mirror just laying flat on a dresser with sharp edges hanging on and the instructions say not to move the furniture. The dressers or any furniture is also NOT BOLTED to the wall. The floors are all uneven and by the end of our trip we nicknamed this out the "topsy turvey" house. The dressers are all flush at the bottom and then have at least 6+ inches of a gap from the wall at the top and no effort has been taken to secure any of this furniture...even the table with the flat screen TV on it.
The windows all have spider webs in the corners like the place hadn't been cleaned well in months, and one of the windows had ants on it and what looked like insect eggs all in a crack on the window sill...another window sill had a crack in the bottom large enough to see the outside from it. We had to use a towel to block out the mosquitoes and hot air.
Oh...the mosquitoes...I had to carry my youngest child at a run in and out of the apartment because the mosquitoes were so bad on the porch you couldn't stand there without getting at least three bites. Our directions were incorrect on how to get into the house so we all stood there trying to get in while the mosquitoes feasted on our bodies. Please note: we are from the South bugs and especially mosquitoes don't phase us but we also can identify a house that does not take measures to deter them. There was also mold on the shower curtain which is horribly gross and for the price we paid, buy a new one!
It's also at the upper end of downtown and although there is a free bus service just a short walk (5ish blocks) from the house you do have to cross rougher neighborhoods (per the bus drivers who told us to keep moving and not to stop). Also, many of the restaurants at the upper end were reviewed to not be good for kids which we didn't realize until we got there. This ended up in really limiting the number of available places to go near the apt and because you were so far it was hard to get back on the bus to go downtown.
Bugs and rodents
This place upon first impression was cozy and charming. Though the drive/parking was hard to find at night and the address didn't come up on my GPS (just use address not unit number).
All three nights I stayed I heard mice in the ceiling of the South room where I was sleeping. When I emailed about the problem, they responded with "this has happened before" but it's just a tree or a squirrel. If you go out side and look you will see trees are not near the roof. They said they have bait boxes and exterminators that come regularly while I believe this they still have an issue with rodents in the ceiling.
There was also a strange Sandy substance coming from the kitchen cabinets and falling onto the counter as well as flying bugs that were shedding their wings all over the apartment. I also saw cockroaches in the bathroom. So clearly they're exterminator is not doing a good job.
When I emailed them the issues they offered to come check on the place though I did not feel that would be helpful. I asked for one day's compensation for the bugs and rodent problem and they did not respond to my email.
This place is pricey and you definitely do not get what you paid for I would recommend staying at a fancy hotel for the price you pay for this. It is also small, it advertises sleeps 6, one mattress is an air mattress and there is very little space that would accommodate for that air mattress.
Pros are that it is dog friendly and in a great location.
Andrea I am sorry to read this review. We take stuff like this very seriously and have had the home fully inspected after you checked out. There are not signs of rodents at all so you can rest assured. I am sorry you felt this way. Since you checked out we have hired an arborist to trim the trees back over the house. This will prevent the branches from rubbing against the historical metal roof. This will also prevent the squirrels from climbing over on the historical metal roof. We do a lot for our guests to make improvements. Thank you again for your feedback.
Old Charlston home feel
We enjoyed our stay here. Unit was very efficient. Two bedrooms separated by living area with couch and TV. The layout worked perfect for us. Really appreciated the off street parking near the unit, that made it very easy to come and go. The place had an outside spot to have a happy hour (bring bug spray!) Close Uber ride to spots downtown, leave the car at home, parking is hard downtown. Take day trips to Sullivan's Island and Folly's Beach. Good location. I recommend it! One more thing, great shower!
We loved it!!
We had everything we needed to feel like home. Very clean and fresh!!
This is a beautiful little spot. The home is set up very well and in a great location to shops, restaurants and bars. Highly enjoyed it.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in The Washington Suite. It is beautifully updated with all of the modern amenities needed without sacrificing historical Charleston charm! We will be reserving this one again in the future.
The house is located in the heart of the charming and trendy Elliotborough/Cannonborough district of downtown Charleston. With its friendly neighbors, cozy restaurants, and tree lined streets, our neighborhood will immerse you in Charleston’s classic charm. This house is perfect for a family or group seeking a fun, culinary and cultural vacation. Popular dining spots in the neighborhood include Hominy Grill, Xiao Bao Biscuit, Fuel, Goulette, Five Loaves café, R Kitchen and the Warehouse for drinks. Our guests and neighbors also rave about Wildflower Pastry located nearby. We recommend going here for a cup of locally-roasted coffee and the delicious cookies and cakes. The house is only a short walk from the very popular King Street where you will find a multitude of great shops – including antique shops, book stores and fashion boutiques – as well as buzzing restaurants.
