Not for us
If you are on a tight budget and looking for a basic, no-frills, 4th floor, windowless crash pad in the middle of a high rise in Downtown Honolulu, this is the unit for you! For us, it was disappointing---so much so that we left after 30 minutes and rented hotel rooms instead. My wife is highly allergic to dust and mold, and she had asthma symptoms almost immediately after we left the unit.
We have family on the island and book accommodations through VRBO up to three times per year, and look forward to the comforts of an island home the units usually provide. This unit was described as a two bedroom, however, the front one of “bedrooms” is located just inside the door we used to enter the unit. The bathroom was musty and appeared to have mold around the faucets. The unit was sparse and tidy, but there were crumbs on the kitchen counters.
Louis, the owner, was helpful and responsive during the booking process. No issues there. He seemed genuinely concerned the unit did not meet our expectations. Hawaii is known for its tradewinds and views of mountains, ocean or sky. It was difficult to get over renting a unit with no windows, and I believe Louis got the point. The unit description on the VRBO web site has since been updated and says it is a “middle unit”.
I hoped I would receive at least partial reimbursement after we left the unit, but I was not surprised when I did not. Recommendation: proceed with caution.
We would not stay here again - bad instructions from owner, dirty place
Rocky start with check in process which was a red flag. Owner did not send info on how to check in. Sound like an inexperienced or first time VRBO owner. When we got there I had to call him. No instructions on where to park at all either. Told me that he'll have his girlfriend leave the keys for me under the front mat of the door. Then owner texted me if we needed parking? Ummm..hello, yes! I was instructed that one of us would have to literally walk up, get the parking badge and then walk back down in order to get in the gate. Well little did he tell us that when we are ready to check out we have to do the same. You would have to take the parking badge with you in order to get out of the parking garage and then have another member in your party walk back up to the room and leave the parking badge in there. If you do not have the parking badge, you cannot leave unless you pay. We ended paying for parking because we left the badge behind when we checked out. Bad instructions all around which caused alot of inconveniences. When we got to the suite, the owner had sticky notes posted with instructions. Unprofessional. The suite had two bedrooms but it does not sleep 5. It has only 2 full beds. The sofa is not a pull out sofa. It appears that someone must have stayed there the day prior to us arriving or perhaps living there because the fridge still had food leftover in there. Bathroom and shower was disgusting. Shower was filthy. We only stayed here 1 night because we got into town earlier than expected (Thank goodness!)
