We stroll to Poipu Beach from the front door in 10 minutes or less. We roll our bikes there and are in the waves in just a few minutes, and we drive in about same amount of time.
The house sits on an 11,200 SF lot and features a big lush back yard with a huge monkey pod tree that keeps the house and yard cool when the beach is too hot. Help yourself to amazing grapefruits when in season. We love to trade with the neighbors for mangoes, avocados, lemons or whatever else is going off at the time. We particularly enjoy the yard for barbecuing and relaxing in the evenings. The backyard is cool in many ways.
The interior is 1104 SF with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths and a smaller bunk room that comfortably sleeps 4 adults and 2 kids. We maintain a very clean, barefoot and sand free, house.
The kitchen is fully equipped and ready for making delicious meals. We love to go the fish market, hit the local farmer's markets, and cook at home. But if you prefer dining out, The Eating House, Keoki's, The Beach House Restaurant, Merriman's, Tide Pools, Tortilla Republic, The Dolphin, and many others are literally just a few minutes from the front door.
A lot of our returning guests stay for a month or more. They enjoy the neighborhood and the comforts of a real home while at the same time being in the heart of Poipu and walking distance to world class beaches and resorts.
We love our little blue green hale and we're always looking for a reason to come work on it, so we are continually renovating and/or updating to keep the house in tip top shape. We finished off the car port floor and closed it off to cars and built a new custom made outdoor couch. The trades winds blow through making it a cool spot for cocktail hour and/or barbecuing.
Linens and towels are included. We have an evolving and revolving supply of masks, snorkels, boogie boards, fins, chairs, and other beach toys that are on the honor system.
Within walking distance and directly connected to Poipu Beach is Brennecke Beach, a great place to learn to body board or body surf. We often watch spinner dolphins playing off Brennecke's Beach at sunrise.
The Waiohai Beach and surf break are connected to Poipu Beach just to the west. From The Waiohai, it's just a short walk along the coast to the super soft sands of the Sheraton.
For an adventure, pile in the car and drive to Ke'e Beach on the north side, hike the Na Pali Coast along the Kalalau trail, or shoot a round of golf and have dinner in Hanalei.
It is only a 20 minute drive to the overlook of Waimea Canyon. Mark Twain called it 'The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.'
For a Hawaiian style golf experience, check out 9 holes for 9 bucks at Kooks (Kukkuiolono). For a world-class golf experience, Poipu Bay at the Grand Hyatt is only a 3 minute drive from Hale Akamai.
When the beach is too hot, relax in the big back yard under the cool shade of the huge monkey pod. A grapefruit tree provides a fresh breakfast between Jan and May. The big sweet-tart grapefruits are remarkable.

Kauai is our favorite Hawaiian island and Poipu is our favorite spot on Kauai. We spend our winters in Colorado where it is snowy and cold. Poipu is perfect! Warm and Sunny!
We love all the benefits of a real home in a local neighborhood. We love to walk to and from the beach. We love to BBQ fish caught that day and playing games in the back yard. We love the grapefruits on our tree and trading our neighbors for mangoes and avocados. We love the Pacific Ocean, the clean air, and the wonderful feeling we have when we are there.
My wife and I spent 7 days at the Little Blue-Green Hale in Poipu Dec 1-8. We had a wonderful time. The house and the amenities were great. Really enjoyed being in a house in a neighborhood just a short walk to the beach. All of the water toys you need are there and the house is in outstanding shape. This was our first visit to Kauai and we definitely plan to come back and hopefully will have an opportunity to rent this lovely house again. Working with the owners, Steve and Kara was great and they were very helpful. Access to the beach at Poipu is a simple 10 minute walk and with the smaller size of the Island it is easy to get anywhere you would like to go. We very much enjoyed our stay here! The location was great and we loved that there was a washer/dryer and all the beach gear already there.
Would not hesitate to stay again or recommend. Everything just as advertised.
Location: about four block walk to Poipu Beach. On a residential street with minimal residential noise and traffic.
Size: Perfect for our family of four. Six would also be good. Kitchen was very functional and well stocked with necessities. Back yard was big. Plenty of space for meals inside at table or on outside deck. Appreciate common condiments and seasonings are kept for next guests rather than thrown out.
Value: Very reasonable fee for location and condition of property.
Overall: Property owner was super responsive and easy to work with. Clean, quiet and maintained. Towels, some beach items, a few games and books included. Enjoyed every day.
The house is exactly as advertised; it is a great option to a hotel. We usually prefer to rent houses since you have more room to spread out, can cook a little, and have more privacy. This house was very clean. The couch was comfortable. The kitchen was nice. It had everything you could need. The house was comfortable. The washer/dryer was a great convenience as we were coming from Oahu. We also enjoyed the kitchen and cooked breakfast at home and a couple dinners. It was also nice to be able to use the coolers to pack sandwiches for our day trips. We picked this house because it had a nice lanai as well as backyard. We did enjoy sitting on the lanai and relaxing some with the cool breezes.
Once my friend saw pics of the house, she decided to come to Kauai too. The house was big enough to have privacy and it had two full bathrooms. We stayed 6 nights and enjoyed our stay.
Location- The house is in a good location. You could walk to Poipu beach or drive a short ways into town to the grocery store, fish market, etc. We debated about staying on the north shore vs. south shore but since it was our first time to Kauai, we decided on the south since it was closer to the attractions. We were easily able to drive to Waimea Canyon, Port Allen, etc. We did take a scenic drive tour one day to the North and it was nice but I liked the south better. The beaches were calmer and things seemed more convenient.
Steve and Kara were happy to assist with any recommendations. The rental process was smooth.
In sum, I highly recommend this rental.
We had such a lovely time at Hala Akamai! We picked this vacation home because it was walking distance to the start of the Kauai Marathon but it turned out to be such a convenient location for everything! This was my first time staying on the south side of the Island and, honestly, I can t wait to come back! Everything you could ever want is right outside your door with other adventures just a short drive away! The house itself was cozy and welcoming with everything you could ever need for a week relaxing in paradise! My only regret was we didn't utilize the grill and eat in more! Hopefully, we will have the chance to do so again! We will definitely be returning!!
Our stay here was perfect. The house was in a great area and just a short walk to the beach . This was our first trip to Kauai and it was a great place to stay. We were busy every day and it was easy to base out of. We enjoyed the
Farmers Markets and cooking on the BBQ. Nice to get away from the tourist areas and just be in a neighborhood. Dreaming of the day we will be back!!!! Can't think of anything that wasn't provided.

We require a signed rental agreement, a copy of your driver's license, and a refundable $500 security/damage deposit before reservations are confirmed. The deposit is refundable and will be return mailed 7-14 business days after check out barring any damage or additional fees.
Payments made by credit card or PayPal will be responsible for credit card and PayPal processing fees.
Cancellations or changes to a reservation that are made more than sixty (60) days prior to the arrival date will forfeit the Security/Damage Deposit. Cancellations or changes to the reservation made within sixty (60) days of the arrival date forfeit all advance payments but may be eligible for a refund of the Security/Damage Deposit. Cancellations or changes that result in a shortened stay, that are made within thirty (30) days of the arrival date, forfeit all Rental Fees and advance payments but may be eligible for a refund of the Security/Damage Deposit barring any damages or additional fees.
If you have a legitimate reason to cancel like a medical or family emergency, we will work with you to re-book your dates. If we are able to re-book your dates we will refund any money that covers your cancellation minus any rate changes or time not re-booked. We can also credit payments toward future booking plus any rate changes or re-booking fees.
