About Freshwater Vacation Rentals
Freshwater Vacation Rentals Freshwater Vacation Rentals purchased this cabin in 2005 Why Freshwater Vacation Rentals chose Republic Cara (glancing through a real estate catalog while driving through Michigan's Upper Peninsula) to Mark: 'How cool. A private island for sale!' Mark: 'We can't afford it.'' (implying that as a teacher and steelworker, those ideas are crazy) Cara: 'But...... perhaps.....other people would find it just as neat of an idea and want to rent it. Mark: 'That's an idea.' Then, the owner let us spend the night on the Island. We realized that this 1800s cabin would take a lot of work to get it up to a good condition. Still, we figured we were up for the challenge, even though we lived 9 hours away. We have since developed many local relationships so that we are able to maintain the property. What makes this cabin unique: Not many people have an opportunity to stay on a deeded private island with no other cabins and a sweet sense of peace and tranquility.. We offer 4 simple boats, as a boat is the only way to get across the 300 feet to the Island. History buffs will love the real logs that were hand cut and placed to create the cabin. Privacy seekers will love the peace and tranquility. Nature lovers will enjoy seeing all types critters and small animals. I love when the eagle nests on the Island. Fishermen/women will love the ease of fishing right off the Island, or taking the boat just feet from shore. Adventure seekers will love the whole experience of an unpredictable vacation where you can truly make the fun your own.

Edward, we are happy to hear that you enjoyed Republic Island. It is a very special property - the only one on the island in fact. It sleeps 4, has a screened in porch and pets are welcome. Electricity, running water, a land-line phone, satellite (Direct TV) + DVD and WiFi internet are some of the creature comforts on this rustic island. We hope to see you again.
Great place wish it had a washer and dryer but other than that it was wonderful!
Very simple process!
Octavia, Republic Island is a very special place for those who really want to get away from it all. The island is only accessible by water. There is a jon-boat, a canoe and when the river runs high, a pontoon boat to serve as your taxis. Your pup is welcome on the island, and there is a screened in porch for guests' comfort. While we realize a washer and dryer would be a great addition, it would be difficult to install in this rustic property. We'd love to work with you again.
Loved the variety of boat options to choose from throughout our stay. Also enjoyed reading the guestbooks and some history about the cabin. The fire kept us nice and cozy during the cold rainy days. We did have to do some light cleaning upon arrival so we could feel more at home, but overall a very nice experience! Thank you.
Kathy, Republic Island is a unique property isn't it? Talk about being able to get away from everything! That big stone fireplace is perfect for cool or rainy days, plus the fire pit is great for evenings, even in the fall. We do hope that you come back again.
All around very dirty, bottom of toilet filthy, bottom of stove where lids to pans are filthy , behi
Needs to be clean it’s a dirty rental . When you charge for a cleaning fee it needs to be clean. A lot of things don’t work in cabin , heat is very important factor there , bedrooms were freezing in October , tv went out , bedroom with fireplace did not work , tv went out ,a lot of openings in the walls drafts all over , needs a lot of tlc.
We owe you an apology. I sincerely wish you would have call us and we could have resolved the majority of your concerns during your stay. If you didn't want to be disturbed, I'm confident we could have found a solution for you. Yes, this cabin built in the early 1900s always needs a lot of love, and we are constantly chinking and caulking between its natural logs. You are correct. Every inch of the cabin is supposed to be clean between each guest visit. We did not realize that the heater in the bedroom was not working. Perhaps no one had needed to turn it on yet this year. When we read your review, my husband immediately went to check on the cabin, found you were correct on both accounts. He confirmed your report that the TV in the living room was hit with a storm which fried the TV. We have replaced both the heater and the TV as a result. We take great pride in the Island. I'm sorry it wasn't the experience we always hope for our guests.
Great place to get away from it all.
We had a great time being in the middle of the U.P. and still having some of the creature comforts like WiFi and tv. The fishing was good and the pontoon was a great platform to fish from safely. There is a large small mouth bass that hangs to the left of dock, he got away twice before I could get the net on him. He had to be at least 20 inches. We walked a trail off of River Road and picked a bag of wild blueberries and raspberries. The island is also centrally located so we were able to take a couple of day trips and explore some of the sites of the U.P.
Peter, it sounds like you had a great vacation, and we're so happy that Republic Island was the perfect place for you. Small mouth bass, rasberries and blueberries sounds like the perfect meal! We look forward to seeing you again.
A very different experience. The cabin was quite secluded and peaceful. I enjoyed the amount of amenities available for the location and price. I would gladly stay there again.
We are happy you enjoyed your stay and am thrilled you enjoyed the depths of the property! Please consider renting one of our 54 other properties the next time you plan your Michigan adventure. We thank you for the compliments and appreciate your recommendation to others! Hope to see you soon!
The Island is on the Michigamme River, a wide part of the river where you feel like you are on a lake!
A beach with playground is a 1.5 mile canoe or car ride away.
34 miles to Marquette and Northern Michigan University.
20 miles to Ishpeming, where you can easily eat out or shop. Visit the National Ski Hall of Fame or the Historic Republic Mine. Plenty to do, or not to do, every season.
Fall: Immerse yourself in the Fall colors. Hunting:deer, duck, grouse and small game on the island or off the boat. Large tracts of public land, which are also available for hunting.
Spring: Fish for Small and Large Mouth Bass, Rock Bass, Walleye, Perch, Northern Pike, Bluegill, Crappie and Trout (boats provided),
Summer: fishing, canoeing, boating, bird watching and some swimming.
Other Activities: x-country skiing, Fall colors, canoeing, absolute relaxation, dog sledding, lighthouses
Golf: GreyWalls Golf is one of the most talked about golf courses in Michigan. The course has tumbling, rugged fairways with few flat lines, some awkward-looking shots and rugged rough and bunkering. Chances are, your ball is going to bounce off one of the granite walls during your round at Greywalls. This is not a pasture-flat golf course. The course has rolling hills to it but many outcroppings on the sides and in fairways. Greywalls is a course worth experiencing because it is one of a kind.
