Not what we hoped for

  • 1 of 5

I hate to leave a slightly negative review but I do hope to spare other renters a less than awesome trip. Upon checking into the home we Paid cash to the house cleaner. Who them turned around and told us that the owners would like us to clean the showers daily. Weird, since we are paying such a large fee for “her” to clean them. After checking out the home we noticed that the showers had not been cleaned for us and that used soap and old shampoo bottles were in each of the showers. Clearly if they had been cleaned then these items would be removed.?

The house is as it looks but right away as you walk in you are greeted by the heat. The house is a sweat box and when we were walking through were told that we need to keep the doors and windows closed due to high crime in the area. There is one AC unit in one of the bedrooms but was also told that we are to keep that door closed while staying there. I honestly don’t mind the heat but this was unbearable. They have a couple of fans but it was not helpful at all.

Before renting the home I spoke with Barbara and told her I was traveling with my 20 month old and would be needing a crib. She assured me that she would be purchasing a portable crib for our stay. When we arrived there was a pack and play. A pack and play is not a crib. It was inconvenient calling around to find a place to rent a crib. If I had known that no crib was available then we would have just rented a different home. There is a path to the beach but it had a very bad odor and there is trash on the trail.

Because of the high temps in the house it was muggy and the house had a musty smell most of the time.

The back yard is nice but there was trash in the landscape that we picked up. Not sure if the service is doing their job.

We made the best of it but wish the home was as described.

No crib and dirty showers, trash outside and basically if you have children find another home with complete AC and toddler items.

Owner's Response: The bad review for Kailau Ohana Escape came as a surprise to us. The house is listed on several web sites and we have only received good reviews so far. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to speak with Miranda in person. The couple that first arrived at the property, was not informed about the cleaning fee and was not prepared for it. There must have been a misunderstanding on the information about the house that was passed on to Miranda by the couple that arrived first. The cleaning fee is paid locally to the cleaning service. This is mentioned in the online description of the house and again in the last document we provide before check-in. Kailua Ohana Escape is located in a safe and upscale neighborhood. We recommend to lock the doors if guests are not at home or during a hurricane as you would in your own home. We never ask the guests to keep the windows shut at all times, since we benefit from the almost always ocean blowing Tradewinds which provide for excellent additional cooling of the house. We have mentioned that one of the showers can grow mold due to humid climate in the summer month and asked to use the squeegee after showering. Garbage in the yard: The yard is regularly trimmed by professional gardeners. I can imagine that some loose plastic bags eventually could have been flying around caused by the high winds of Hurricane Lane. Portable Baby bed: I am a mother of 2 grown children and had my children countless times in a portable graco pack 'n play. I must confess that the information it isn't safe is new to me. I have searched for the 10 best portable cribs on google and Graco pack n' play comes up as number 2 as one of the best portable cribs for infants and toddlers! Our goal is to make our guests vacation as comfortable as possible and we are sorry that this was not achieved with Miranda and her family. Hurrinca Lane was a big concern even before Miranda's arrival and we communicated on my private phone in addition to email. It would have been nice to have this information during her stay to address the issues.

Perfect home away from home for family with kids

  • 5 of 5

Oahu was the perfect summer vacation for our family. With two young boys the outdoor adventures were endless. Our Kailua home was a great base for our two week stay. The home is spacious and well appointment, with comfortable beds and furniture and a well equipped kitchen. Barbara, who manages the house, was very responsive and went the extra mile to help us out with any issues we had with the home. The beach is a three minute walk away down a private path and our kids loved boogie boarding in the warm ocean. The house also come with so many extras - it has boogie boards, sand toys, beach chairs and even a couple of surf boards for renters to borrow. We also made great use of the toys and kids books that were in the house. Kailua itself is no longer the sleepy town it was 20-years ago (which we missed somewhat.) But it has so many new restaurants, cafes and an amazingly stocked Whole Foods, that we really never needed to go into Honolulu. This was a great home away from home for our stay and we can't wait to come back soon. Thank you!

Perfect Island Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay in Kailua for my husband, three sons and parents. This house was in the perfect spot as it was very close to the beach (1 minute walk) and not over crowded. The house was beautiful and had plenty of room to fit a family of seven. The owners thought of everything and had so many unexpected amenities (beach gear, bikes, condiments, coffee, beach towels, etc.). I can’t say enough great things about this place. I only wish there was A/C in every bedroom. The main part of the house was comfortable as long as the windows and doors were open to let the sea breeze cool the home. We would definitely love to come back soon. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay at your beautiful beach house. We made the best family memories. Aloha and Mahalo.
