Many famous restaurants highlighted in Magazines like “Southern Living” and on television programs such as “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” are close by including Early Bird Diner (less than a mile), Bessinger’s BBQ (less than a mile), The Glass Onion (1.2 miles), Swig & Swine (1.2 miles), Boxcar Betty’s (1.3 miles), and Three Little Birds Cafe (3 miles). Harbourview Restaurant & Lounge (3.4 miles) in the high rise Holiday Inn Riverview offers scenic views of the Ashley River and downtown Charleston.

The trendy Avondale area (2 miles) offers an abundance of restaurants from casual (Triangle Char & Bar, The Roost Bar N’ Grill, Mellow Mushroom, Verde) to upscale (Al di la, Pearlz Little Oyster Bar, VooDoo Tiki Bar) to specialty (Avondale Wine & Cheese, Gala Desserts). The most popular area plantations are along Ashley River Road, including Drayton Hall, Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, and Middleton Place (10 miles). Even closer is the McLeod Plantation Historic Site (4 miles); also popular is Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens in Mount Pleasant (16 miles).

I grew up on Long Island, attended college in North Carolina, then lived near Annapolis, Maryland for 30+ years. Once the kids were off to college, I decided to sell the family home and choose my retirement location.

My love of the beach developed during childhood, coupled with an appreciation of a historic colonial city and a desire for a warmer climate that still experienced seasons of the year, made Charleston an obvious choice.

How do you define “good location?” Perhaps one measure is the number of hotels nearby. If you look on a web site like Trivago, enter the address 1644 Savannah Highway, Charleston SC 29407 (half mile away), with a “distance from” of 3 miles. There are a minimum of twelve. This will also give an idea of what you would pay for a hotel.

Less than 4 miles (10 minutes) from downtown Charleston. 9 miles (15 minutes) from Charleston International Airport. 12 miles (25 minutes) to Folly Beach. 25 miles (40 minutes) to Kiawah Island. 14 miles (25 minutes) to Sullivan’s Island. 17 miles (30 minutes) to Isle of Palms. 10 miles (20 minutes) to Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant.

Fort Sumter and Harbor cruises operate from near the South Carolina Aquarium (6 miles, 20 minutes). Charleston City Market, The Battery, Rainbow Row, Waterfront Park, King Street, The Citadel, College of Charleston, MUSC all within 6 miles.

Clean, comfy, and close to downtown!

Wonderful stay in this renovated cozy home! The bathrooms are absolutely BEAUTIFUL (upscale hotel quality), the beds are very comfortable with the softest sheets you'll ever sleep on, and the kitchen is spacious and easy to cook in without bumping into each other. The owner is quick to respond to any questions or concerns, which is unlike other home owners I've dealt with in the past. Thank you for a wonderful experience! We WILL stay here again!

Our family came to visit Charleston for 4 day. The house was roomier than we thought it would be, and a comfortable place to relax after a long day of touring Charleston.
