Why Rick Laporga chose South Oahu

During our vacation, my husband and I were captivated by the Ocean, Diamond Head, canal view of this penthouse. After the vacation, we ended up purchasing this unit from the owner. We have recently fully transformed this condo throughout into a luxury penthouse. We hope you enjoy our beautiful vacation home as much as we do and ask that you please take great care of it. Mahalo!

Wonderful view but with drawbacks

  • 3 of 5

There was a mix up to being able to get into the property which was hard to take after an exhausting trip from the UK. The views are stunning but the property is a little tired and in need of a refurb. It was not as clean as I would have expected. It was a good location to walk into town. We had a car and the parking at the hotel was very expensive at 25 dollars per day. There wasn't as good a view of the fireworks as I had anticipated from the description given.

Owner's Response: Aloha! We take input seriously and always strive to get better. For every rainy day we can look forward to sunshine! To help our readership, I copy and paste to respond to specific concerns: 1. "There was a mix up to being able to get into the property which was hard to take after an exhausting trip from the UK." reply: Check In Instructions is given about a week prior to arrival. For about 4 years now in offering this as a vacation rental we have made "check in" as a "self-check in". We also preregister guest with the building security office which is available 24/7 to assist in any programming of key card if needed. But, this being said, we offered to do a courtesy "meet and greet" to help you. The call was made upon your arrival and we got there within 15 minutes or less finding out you did manage to get your card keys in the lock box and got in your Penthouse unit with no problem. So, I went up to your room to check if you made it in ok. Which I am glad you managed. Good job! 2. "The views are stunning but the property is a little tired and in need of a refurb. It was not as clean as I would have expected." reply: Thanks for mentioning about views which makes the unit special. You can change the interior of the unit, but you can not change it's views! Views of the Ocean, Diamond Head Crater, the Ala Wai waterway and city is unsurpassed and probably one of the best views in Waikiki! It is an upgraded unit with most of the main areas like the new flooring, kitchen is completely upgraded with new cabinets, granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances, and walls painted with a nice color scheme that is soothing, and also new sofa bed in living room that is stylish (with a comfortable mattress). This was a substantial cost and not just touch up work. But, your mention of rehab has some merit where we can always improve even on the improvements. Regards to cleaning, we take very seriously and now do not depend on the cleaners only. We have a dedicated inspector who is doing a 45 item check list. Just think, we are not "Trump Tower" (by any stretch), but does not hurt to try! 3. "It was a good location to walk into town. We had a car and the parking at the hotel was very expensive at $25 per day." response: Most hotels charge $30-$45 per day and only valet (they expect a tip every time). 4. "There wasn't as good a view of the fireworks as I had anticipated from the description given". reply: Seeing it is a bonus!

Just like home

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for one week during March. 4 adults and 1 child.

Check in/out was easy and instructions were easy to follow. Welcome package was on the kitchen counter. The owner also called afterwards to see if there were any questions/concerns.

The unit is just as the pictures show, but it is starting to show some signs of wear and tear. The view is so beautiful and we were able to see the Friday night fireworks at the Hilton. Location was convenient and parking was available for extra fee. There is a 7-Eleven on the same block and also a couple of different dining options in the building.

We used the kitchen everyday and it has everything that you could possibly need. Wifi was good. The unit also has lawn chairs and beach mats for us to use. The washer/dryer was also very useful as we were able to wash the beach towels right after use.

Overall a very pleasant stay.

Great Layout and views!

  • 4 of 5

Amenities were good. Incredible view of Waikiki. Expensive parking at $25 a day. The hotel itself is outdated, but the unit was nicely decorated. I would stay again.

Owner's Response: Aloha! Thanks for the ****4 STARS!**** Yes, Incredible views! And yes, we welcome you to stay again...please mention that you are a returning guest to get some kind of special offering! This is also the first mention of our unit being "nicely decorated". We want the stay experience to be warm and with "Aloha" in mind....love of Hawaii, love of life and welcoming! So, thank you for noticing. Parking is relatively lower than the market rate in Waikiki at $30-40 per day. Sometimes it's valet which they expect a tip every time they handle your vehicle. So, $25 is not too bad in comparison and self parking and 24 hour in and out privileges too! All the best, Rick and support staff

Fabulous view - Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

Many great things about this property - starting with the view. At the 42nd floor you can easily look out and see a LOT of the ocean - one evening there were fireworks and we had a perfect view out the dining window. The owner left a nice 'present' wrapped on the kitchen counter - extra paper towels, a macadamia treat, shampoo, soap, dishwasher pods, etc. - Thank you! Lots of room in the unit - everything worked fine. The hotel staff on the ground floor were SUPER friendly and helpful - they also have our thanks for showing the best places for groceries, etc. Relatively easy to walk around - we didn't rent a car and walked as far as the Zoo & Aquarium - all high end shops are pretty close as are the Waikiki hotels. Only cab we took was to/from airport and to the Royal Palace in 5 days.

Couple of minor quibbles - no wifi (probably thing most missed in the unit in this day & age); TV acted funky at times but settled down; building is a bit aged - guessing built 30-40 years ago. Please don't take this last comment as a negative - just be aware everything isn't all shiny & brand new. We would stay here again definitely.

Owner's Response: *****5 STARS!***** Thank you! You are so kind! You were very eloquent of your comments where the readership can get a glimpse of what to do and expectations... I enjoyed reading that you actually went out to experience some of the Waikiki resort area where there is so much to do. The Honolulu Zoo and Aquarium is a nice stroll to get there for those who like walking. So much to see as you head that direction passing all those shops and eateries...but also the beach area where they promote you to relax on the bench's along the way. Kapiolani Park which features the Zoo and Aquarium is full with exotic trees and a picturesque view of Diamond Head Crater from a closer perspective compared to viewing from the Penthouse vantage point. I am also glad you went to the Iolani Palace which is the only "Royal Palace" in the US former home of Queen Liliuokalani I also took a tour there which has so much history or our kingdoms past. But anyway, getting back to other comments on building's age. Yes, it was built a while back during the 1970's boom in Waikiki. The Hawaiian Monarch new management team has improved the property in stages. They had a flooring contractor measuring the lobby area so that would be a welcomed improvement. When you arrive in the Penthouse level on the 42nd floor (PH402) it surely is a welcomed shock....it's stunning in appearance and views! We wanted to welcome our guest with some items to appreciate in way of a "gift bag" just to get you started. We are always here to help make your stay a happy experience. So, to our readership...please call us if the TV or Wifi goes hay wire (as a side note; February was extremely windy that caused havoc through the island and actually blew a roof off a house! This is definitely a cause of why some internet and cable service being affected.) .....we will make sure it's working for you (weather permitting)! Thanks again for the "5 Stars Review" Rick and staff

Fantastic views, nice condo in an aging building

  • 4 of 5

The views of Waikiki & Diamond Head from this penthouse condo can't be beat! The unit was decently equipped and we had a comfortable 4 night stay. This is a privately owned unit located above the Hawaiian Monarch hotel. While the condo itself was first class, it's unfortunate that the hotel is starting to show its age (pool, lobby area & elevators).

Owner's Response: Aloha! Thanks for the compliments....I like when you mentioned our unit is "FIRST CLASS"!!! This means a lot to us....... as we try to perform a first class service and first class accommodation. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Hope you can return to Hawaii soon! Rick and staff

Stunning View

  • 5 of 5

This family of 5 loved our stay and so appreciated our view every time we walked in the door. We enjoyed our walk around Honolulu and found everything within a few blocks. We enjoyed opening our windows to feel the soothing trade winds, however we were surprised to find no screens on the windows 40 floors up. The instructions to get into our unit were easy to navigate and we had absolutely no issues. We had plenty of towels and clean sheets to accommodate our stay. My only suggestion would be to replace the pilled queen sheets on the bed as well as the shower curtains in the bathroom. Very minor issues for this amazing property and I would definitely recommend Hawaiian Monarch.

Owner's Response: 5 STARS*****! thank you so much! Yes, it's a stunning unit that offers a picturesque view of emerald ocean, Waikiki super skyline, iconic Diamond Head Crater, Ala Wai waterway and even the forestry on the Koolau mountain range. We are now getting in the "whale watching" season and don't be surprised to see them breach from the Penthouse views! We had a special meeting with our cleaners and inspection person to make sure the quality of sheets and shower curtain meets our high standards! We thrive in "high standards" and offering a quality stay! All the best, Rick, owner and support staff
