About the property

Perfect Secluded Cabin - Amazing Views of the Smokey Mountains w/ hiking trails

We can't adequately describe how peaceful it is to sit on the deck of our little cabin and listen to the birds and the wind through the trees as you watch the sun set over the Smokey Mountains. With the Nantahala National Forest literally as our back yard, this new log cabin is the perfect secluded nature getaway! After getting one of the best night’s sleep you've ever had in our pillow top bed, you'll have the energy to go Fly Fishing or White Water Rafting on the Nantahala River, or Water Skiing on the glassy water of the highest elevation lake east of the Mississippi (Nantahala Lake is just 1 mile down the road from the cabin). Hikers love the easy access to the Appalachian and Bartram Trails - and the photos you see on this listing are from a secret Swimming Hole and Cliff Diving area off the Bartram Trail. Local activities also include mountain biking, kayaking, hunting, golfing, swimming, sight-seeing, and more. Renters are also welcome to use our canoe to explore Nantahala Lake! We've got some DVD’s at the cabin in case it rains.

The cabin is stocked with everything you'd have at your own kitchen including a propane grill on the deck. The quaint little towns of Andrews and Murphy are just a short drive away if you don’t want to cook your own meals or forgot your favorite fishing lure.

Our renters continually tell us how peaceful and therapeutic it is to stay at our cabin. They mention having great plans to visit touristic attractions and outdoor adventures - but are so lured by the peace and beauty of the surroundings of the cabin that they end up spending most the day kicked back on the deck enjoying the view or sitting at the fire pit fascinated by the stars that illuminate the night sky.

NOTE: While mountain roads are sometimes steep and curvy they are well maintained paved roads and completely accessible. We have gone to great lengths to make the cabin as accessible as possible, but our GRAVEL driveway is EXTREMELY steep. Therefore, we REQUIRE all renters to either have 4 wheel drive or all-wheel drive! If you don’t have such a vehicle we require you to park at the bottom and hike up. This is a typical request for mountain cabins and not an unreasonable expectation, unless you're unwilling to hike our 800 ft. driveway. NOTE:IF YOU CHOOSE TO IGNORE THIS REQUIREMENT YOU WILL PAY FOR THE DAMAGES TO THE DRIVEWAY AND YOUR VEHICLE BECAUSE YOU WILL GET STUCK!

Renting Online: If you're reading this then you're ahead of the game when it comes to online renting. We have tried to make the process as simple as possible. Feel free to call us at any time if you have any questions about the process. If you're ready - just “book online”. Once we have received confirmation of the payment you will receive a detailed set of directions to the cabin which also include the 'key box code' for entry into the cabin.

Final note: This cabin is REMOTE by US standards - so be prepared for no cell service, no TV, no WIFI, and no one bothering you!

About Mike Henrie

As a child I would come to this property on extended family reunions. My mother was raised on the property when there was no running water or electricity. Enchanted by the stories of her childhood, my father he loved visiting her family and hiking the mountain trails with my Uncles. When my Grandfather passed away in the 1989 my family inherited a parcel of the property that had been in our family since the 1830's. I embraced my father's vision of developing and building on our 'family' land in North Carolina and shared that vision with my wife when we first got married. Even as we were finishing our degrees at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah we began saving. In 2003 I joined the Air Force and was stationed at Warner Robins, GA. We practically raised our boys on the weekends hiking up and down the mountains trying to find the right spot for our own cabin. In 2005 my Uncle Frank granted us 4.88 acres of his inheritance and we eventually built the cabin you see here. In 2007 we were transferred to Alaska. After 6 heavenly years there we received orders, and in 2013 made the epic 45 day journey from Alaska to Virginia - via 17 National Parks, to our current duty station at Langley AFB, VA. In January 2017 I purchased my Uncle Frank's remaining parcel which incorporates the shed and field. Our plan is to further develop the property with more cabins.

Perfect Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent 2 nights at Smawlie for our 28th wedding anniversary, and it could not have been more perfect. So peaceful, quiet, and just a beautiful setting. As two very busy adults, this was just what we needed. My number 1 recommendation is to find the swim hole (not easy). But, Mike was kind enough to send us directions. Although extremely cold, we could not resist taking a dip into the crystal clear water pocketed in this truly picturesque setting. For anyone looking for just a peaceful break, excellent hiking and driving trails, or coffee by the fire, this is the place for you. This was our first stay but will not be our last!

Regards,

John McKenna

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind words John. Would love to see your photos shared on our Smawlie Log Cabin Facebook page and Instagram. By the way, the water is always going to be child because it's from the bottom of Nantahala Lake, the highest elevation lake East of the Mississippi.

Do not stay here!! 0 STARS!

  • 1 of 5

Was not able to get in because of cleaning crew until almost dark. We went down the driveway beside the correct driveway on accident and was shocked at what we saw. A white SUV turned over on its side with crib mattresses and baby items sitting beside the SUV. Immediately became very freaked out thru our vehicle in reverse and got out of there. Was very sketchy!! Once we realized it was the wrong driveway looked at the driveway we were supposed to go up and decided not to chance tearing up our truck with the steep steep muddy long driveway. There was no one anywhere near this place and no cell service. Not the way we wanted to start our anniversary weekend but after I calmed down from what we saw and the disappointment we decided to go elsewhere and make the most of the weekend.

Owner's Response: In 12 years of renting our property we have only had two renters not follow the directions that we provide. Kim is one of those. She never even made it to the cabin! Her review is completely inaccurate. First of all, it is very clear in the description of the property that there is no cell phone reception in the mountains of North Carolina. That is true of every cabin in this area and is one reason that we send detailed directions and ask that renters follow them to the "T" to get to the property. Personally, I love to disconnect once in a while from the cell phone and internet and relax in the mountains. It is also extremely clear from our description that our driveway is a steep, gravel driveway that requires four-wheel drive or to hike it. It is NOT muddy as claimed by Kim who saw it only in the dark. It is a very well-maintained driveway that has remained that way because hundreds of renter's respect our requirements. As for the property that Kim did describe, it is miles from our cabin in the "backwoods" and belongs to a poor elderly widow who abandoned it a decade ago. Hunters and hillbillies have vandalized it over the years. It's part of the character and history of certain parts of Western NC and is completely harmless. Unless you go for a hike in the wrong direction you'll never even know it's there. We reached out to Kim and invited her to return and actually stay at the cabin at a 50% discount as a gesture of kindness before she left this review, to which she declined. It's disheartening to see a public review of a place Kim never got to see. We share our home with guests because it's a beautiful escape, a relaxing place, and a fantastic way to disconnect for a while and enjoy a well deserved vacation. We will continue to do so, even if some people can't follow directions and then blame others for their mistake.

Great views and privacy.

  • 4 of 5

For a private, peaceful getaway with great mountain views this is the place. Cabin is small but equipped with all the modern amenities. Don't expect TV or cell phone reception but that is why you pick this place. Great to sit under the stars by the fire pit and enjoy your favorite libation.

Hidden little gem...

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful little cabin in a beautiful secluded location! We truly spent a few days disconnected from the rest of the world. Great views abound while eating meals on the deck. The driveway is a bit daunting but very doable in a 4WD. (Don't try it unless you have a 4WD.). It was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary!

Our cozy little log cabin is nestled in the mountains of the Nantahala National Forest at the edge of Nantahala Lake - between Franklin and Andrews North Carolina. We are in an ideal location for hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming. We’re literally 15 minutes off the Appalachian and Bartram Hiking trails, several mountain bike trails, and lots of little stream crossings and waterfalls. If you’re into scenic drives or motorcycling, the area is flooded with world famous drives - including the infamous "Tail of the Dragon", Cherahola Skyway, and the Smokey Mountain Parkway. Hunting season is incredible around this area! Wild Turkey, Deer, and Black Bear are just a few of the choices. If you’d rather be outdoors than anywhere else, then this is the area for you! Other than our other property in Alaska, I can’t think of a more beautiful place. Grill out on the deck! But if you don’t like to cook your own meals or forgot your favorite fishing lure, the town of Andrews is only 10 miles away.

Stay up late - because star gazing the night sky is just phenomenal and finding new constellations never seen under city lights is a regular occurrence.

Enjoy the fire pit! Bring some s'mores and your pocket knife!

Take our canoe out to Rabbit Island and try the Rope Swing. Hike the Bartram Trail to a secret Swimming Hole and Cliff Diving.

Gather some wild Black Berries on the trail behind the cabin.

Take a nap. Enjoy the view. Read a book. Hey - you're on vacation!
