makaha house

  • 4 of 5

stayed at this house with my wifes family and was comfortable. furniture a little dated and old but ok. had issues setting the alarm so make sure you ask agent how to set. in the end didnt bother. the house needs some minor maintence. kitchen was well stocked and a lot of left over cooking items helped in cooking meals so check the cupboards before going to the market, will save on doubleing up on items.

The lani was the best for afternoon drinks watching whales breach and spotting turtles.

It was a bit of a hike to gett anywhere. traffic was bad in peak hour so plan your trip. Is a good spot if you plan not to go anywhere. Had no problem with the homeless. wasnt much choice for resturants in the area so if you like fine dining maybe try the city. All up not a bad house and as always the people with you will make the time special and fun.

What a great house and location!

  • 5 of 5

I have been to this home several times over the past 5 years and love using it. The house is in great shape with comfortable carpet in the bedrooms and beautiful stone floors up and down. The kitchen is modern with a nice refer, wine cooler, dishwasher, oven and built in stove. The kitchen has a great counter with stools or a large sit down dining table. It sleeps 12 and has 4 baths plus an outdoor shower to accomodate all the guests. The lanai (deck) is mesmerizing and, depending on the time of year, you can sit and watch dolphins jump, whales breach, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles or wake to the visit of the Hawaiian Monk Seal sunning itself. It is ideal to sit and play cards, chat, or host a large meal. The enclosed yard is perfect for bocci, crouqet, volleyball, or a slip-n-slide! A hidden gem of a golf course is directly behind the house in the valley about a mile called Makaha Valley Resort Course. Views of the water and mountains on every hole. Ewa Beach has 5 golf courses within 2 miles of each other about 40 minutes away.

You can dip in the ocean in front of the house, but there is a reef. The beach on the other side of the mountain is a huge cresent beach that is easier to swim and you can walk to it. Pokai Bay is up the road and Yokohama Bay is at the end of the road.

Words of Common Sense:

-This is the West Side of Oahu, it is also known as the hot side. There are fans in the house and it catches great breezes, but it can get warm in the summer.

-This is Hawaii. Regardless of how clean you are, it is a tropical climate with tropical pests. It is not uncommon to find an insect, gecko, or lizard indoors from time to time. Don't leave food out.

-The West Side can have currents. Be aware when swimming. There are great lagoons open to the public at Koolina Resort 20 minutes away. Waikiki and Kailua are an hour away.

-Traffic is from 6 to 8 every morning into Honolulu, and 3 to 6 every evening from Honolulu. It is a city, there are commutes.

There are homeless living on the beach, as there are in Waikiki and Honolulu. The beach is public to all so the authorities cannot move them. The City and County has cleaned up all the beach parks along this coast after years of neglect. The home is secure behind a wall with security gate and an alarm on the home.

This truly is your secluded villa to get away and relax. It is especially great that it can accomodate such a large number of people so you can all enjoy Hawaii together!

In need of updating (furniture old and mattresses need replaced) and pest control treatment.

  • 1 of 5

First of all, don't come here during the heat of the summer! We thought we'd be able to tolerate the fact there was no air conditioning but it was unbearable in late June. The furniture in the living room is old and dirty; this is the area that needs the most updating. The cushions on the couch sunk in the middle. The bedroom mattresses are not comfortable and seemed old. The photos of this house on the website are a bit misleading.

Next major concern was that we lost a majority of our food due to the fact there are tiny little critters all over the kitchen. We tried to keep stuff sealed and put away but even crumbs attracted these tiny parasites. It was disgusted and a big turn off for wanting to cook in this house. The bathrooms were also infested with some bugs in all the corners and tubs. Definitely couldn't leave your belongs hanging around or toothbrushes by the sink.

The location of this home is not the greatest. There are homeless people who stay all over the Makaha beach in their make-shift tent or tarp homes several hundred feet away. We caught one man who appeared homeless who was peering into the home's backyard. It was very freaky. The home has a security system but it was hard to use at night with our family of 10 staying in the home. We were warned that if we set it off we'd have to pay the $50 fine.

Although it is only 13 miles from Kapolei, it often took 35-40 minutes to get there from Makaha. The trek to Honolulu or Waikiki took over an hour during traffic time. Pay the extra money if you're traveling to Oahu to see the major sites. The traffic was horrible.

Unless you can go and see this house before renting it or you are very familiar with Makaha, it is highly advised that you don't make this your Hawaii accommodations. This area is highly known for the homeless people and natives who don't care for outsiders. (We got this information after we arrived to the home--- from different folks in Kapolei and Honolulu).

I requested some reviews from the contact person before sending in my deposit. We didn't see the spectacular marine animals that the reviews I received boasted about.

Yes it was a 5 bedroom home. The property was maintained and semi-clean (for the amount of the cleaning fee, you'd think it would have been deep cleaned). Although a couple of concerns were mentioned to the caretaker (refrigerator wasn't very cold and bug problem), she did not take any action to correct these concerns.

The waves are right at your back door!

  • 4 of 5

Our family of twelve ranging from 3 to 74 had an absolutely fabulous time here. The lanai was where we spent a lot of out time along with time in the ocean in our backyard. We saw sea turtles in the morning, build sand castles during the day, went snorkeling, and experienced authentic O'ahu. (not touristy in this neighborhood) A few of us climbed the Toe ( the volcanic lava rock mountain of 251 feet just next to us) We loved the beaches nearby also. Everything is within a hour or so on this island, so we could go explore Honolulu, or the North Shore or the Windward side and come back to our paradise. The people were friendly and helpful.
