Very remote but worth it!
After a few relaxed days in Caye Caulker, my group of 4 was ready for some jungle time, and we were immersed in it at Howler Hill! We did have some consternation which was my fault, since when I booked this lovely place, I had thought that the very bumpy dirt road that went south from the house continued all the way to the Mayan ruins of Caracol - it does not! I apparently had not looked carefully enough at online maps to realize this, so instead of being delighted that we found a place midway between San Ignacio and Caracol that would save us major driving time to this destination we really wanted to visit, we ended up placing ourselves so far away from it (a 4-5 hour drive each way) that we could not make the trip work. Soooooo.....that was silly, but since we saw Tikal and Xunantunich, we ended up being OK with it and we had a brilliant time in the jungle.
Howler Hill is a beautiful property located in the vast, pristine jungle with incredible views that we soaked in. We saw keel-billed toucans, raptors, and all manner of small birds from the deck, as well as many howlers. And, folks....the howlers here are no joke. They kept it up all night some nights, which can make it difficult to sleep (even with earplugs) if you are a sensitive sleeper. But who cares! You're in the jungle, in a beautiful, modern, comfortable home, which is the best of both worlds!
Guests must bring their own 5-gallon water jugs, be prepared. In fact, bring everything you might need for self-catering.
The house is very sparsely furnished - we wished there were some side or coffee tables in the bedrooms and on the deck, as well as better pots and pans to cook with. No closets or much for bedroom furniture, so there's no very convenient place to stash your stuff.
The house layout is a little odd; the master suite half bath has a foot-pedal toilet like on an airplane, which unfortunately was pretty smelly. And had some scary-big ants. :(
The drive from San Ignacio is a VERY bumpy 30 minutes or more. You need a tough 4 wheel drive vehicle for this.
Property manager Lucy was brilliant in arranging a private tour to Tikal for us - she organized a driver and private guide for far cheaper than the conventional tour bus option, and we had a *great* experience! I heartily recommend this if you are considering a trip to Tikal, which you should absolutely do, in fact, just stop reading this right now and book it.
Overall a great experience! :)
Hello Jennifer and guests
Thank you for your review and happy to hear you enjoyed your stay. Yes, the view is spectacular from the balcony and there are lots of opporttunities to see all kinds of birds native to Central America. I agree, the howler monkeys can be loud but that is part of the experience while in the jungle.
In the email I had sent when you made your booking, it stated information about the 10 miles of bumpy road, where to purchase water, necessary groceries, etc. for your stay. Regarding the kitchen, my previous guests stated the following:.....The house itself is beautiful and well stocked with dishes and cooking supplies.....and I have had 6 adult guests staying with no issues pertaining to kitchen supplies. As for bedroom furniture, there are two credenza like cabinets, each containing 3 drawers lined with cedar to place garments and a movable clothes rack to hang your clothes. Although small, there are round tables beside the beds.
I do apologize for the ants being present in the master bedroom ensuite and will advise my property manager of this. This is very unusual as she is very attentive to these issues and I hope you mentioned this to her.
It is unfortunate that you did not make it to Caracol but do want to mention that a friend of mine and myself did a day tour to Caracol when I was there last month (February, 2019). We not only saw Caracol but also stopped at Rio Frio cave and spent time at Rio-on-Pools swimming. The tour was not rushed, but very relaxed and were back in San Ignacio by 4:30 pm.
Once again, thank you for your booking and safe travels, wherever they may take you.
