The property has been renovated throughout the years and updated in 2018. It will undergo a major kitchen and dining room renovation this summer. Please follow us on Instagram @jacobrabbhouse to follow the progress.

The elegant three-story property and walled garden is beautifully maintained and offers an unbeatable combination of quiet luxury, privacy and safety during your stay in the City of Charleston. All of this and 3 off-street parking spaces for our guests -- an extra not easily found!

The Jacob Rabb House is a one of a kind alternative vacation destination for your next visit or event in Charleston. The elegant property is perfect for family vacations. We offer the Jacob Rabb House for 3 night minimum visits. Special rates for the use of the property for one day or evening events are available. The sky is the limit on your needs, just request and it will be done prior to your arrival.

History: The historic antebellum brick home was built in 1851 by Jacob Rabb, who purchased the lot from the neighboring Methodist Episcopal Church. He constructed the present building, a typical brick single house with a plastered brick gable end and slate roof. Our home is the only survivor of its kind of the Fire of 1861 in Ansonborough, which is evident by the smaller more modest wooden dwellings constructed after the Civil War, such as the freedman's cottages at 14 and 17 Pinckney Street, and the small wooden single houses at 18 and 19 Pinckney Street. It has received several awards for historic preservation, and the Carolopolis Award from the Preservation Society of Charleston. The Jacob Rabb House is protected by a Conservation Easement Donated to Historic Charleston Foundation, 2004.

The charming Ansonborough Neighborhood itself was conceived in 1696 as the first 'suburb' of the original walled City of Charles Town. It came to be known as Ansonborough for the colonial naval officer George Anson, the future First Lord of the Admiralty. It was said that he won the rights to the property in a card game with a wealthy local merchant. What great luck! A stroll through the neighborhood will give you examples of amazing historic architecture, grand columns and piazzas, original wrought iron gates, lovely gardens and courtyards, massive live oaks and one of the few original cobblestone streets left in the City.

The property is located on Pinckney Street at Church Street, just one block off famous Market Street. Our perfect location enables you to enjoy every aspect of Charleston's Historic District. Step right out your front piazza door and this grand City is yours! Walk through the Old City Market on your way to stroll the famous Battery on East Bay Street, or take up a few art galleries and antique shops along King Street before a quiet, lovely dinner at one of Charleston's many fine restaurants. Pack a picnic and head to the Waterfront Park or take a private ride around town in a horse-drawn carriage. Museums, the Aquarium, The Dock Street Theater, famed House and Garden Tours, and even a evening Ghost Tour are all within walking distance of your vacation rental home.

The Property: Upon entering the property via a gated drive into the well-kept garden, you begin to experience the real feel of your visit to Charleston. Take some time to relax a bit in the garden, then ease on up to the piazza, drop into a rocker and take in the sights and sounds of the City. Lets go inside . . .

The first level of the home consists of a light-filled Drawing Room (also called the Morning Room), a formal Dining Room, the well appointed Kitchen, and a Powder Room. Moving upstairs to the second level, you come upon the Family Room. Also on the second level you will find the Master Suite, consisting of a beautiful bedroom and stunning bath with a shower, separate tub, and double sinks. The washer/dryer is also located in the master bath for your convenience, although cleverly hidden from view. With the second floor piazza entrance located just outside your bedroom door, you will be tempted to grab a book and rock away while enjoying the views of the garden and City. Finally, up to the third level you will find two well appointed guest bedrooms and a full bath (shower only) on this level.

We are confident you and your family will find our property to be exactly what you are looking for in a rental property for your next visit to Charleston, South Carolina. The experience in our home will send you home with memories for a lifetime. We look forward to meeting you soon.

Fishing trip weekend

  • 5 of 5

Rabb House was the perfect spot for our weekend. The location was fantastic and the home was nicely appointed. Place was clean and very comfortable. My only recommendation would be a sleeper sofa in the library.

Wonderful historic home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family has been traveling to Charleston for 25 years and this was the nicest place that we have ever stayed. It was a perfect location within short walking distance to the market, water front, Harris Teeter and numerous restaurants. The house was beautifully decorated and we enjoyed sitting on the piazzas (upper and lower) as well as relaxing in the courtyard area. Pam (Property Manager) was very accessible and Mr. Molony (the owner) stopped by briefly just to make sure all was going well. We were a party of 5 adults and two children and enjoyed a very comfortable stay in this wonderful historic home. It felt like coming home!

Great Historic Charleston Home

  • 5 of 5

We went to Charleston for the weekend with our four children and my parents to celebrate a big birthday. The location of the Jacob Rabb house is great. We really liked the private garden, Charleston style porches and the main house. We had dinner catered in one night which really allowed us to thoroughly enjoy the house and historic setting. The owner and manager were very courteous and attentive both before and during our stay. Would definitely recommend this to our friends.

A Wonderful New Year's Interlude at the Jacob Rabb House

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, and our college-aged daughter had a wonderful time at this beautiful home in the heart of Charleston's most interesting district - the week between Christmas and the New Year. The home is beautifully maintained and tastefully appointed -- including two living rooms on the first and second floor -- a well-provisioned kitchen -- a beautiful master suite and bathroom -- and two nicely-sized bedrooms on the third floor. The gated property affords a parking spot within the grounds, which is a real plus and the verandas on the first and second floor afforded us a place to sit outside with guests amidst the trees and greenery and entertain. There is also a nice yard that, in warmer weather, one could entertain on the grounds.

The location of this property is stellar. You are 1-2 blocks from Market and King street with so many historic sites and restaurants and incredible shopping. You are also walking distance to the Maritime Center and Aquarium and ferries to Fort Sumter, etc. We went sailing in December the weather was so nice! You are also very close to the Market street historic marketplace where original crafts are sold - as well as the carriage companies that offer one of the most pleasant experiences we enjoyed. My daughter was able to walk to a spinning class and yoga. We made homemade candles at Candlefish (highly recommend) -- again, walking distance away.

Pamela, the property agent, and Michael, the owner of this property, couldn't have been more accommodating and professional and welcoming to our family. We highly recommend this property to families or a group of friends considering a getaway. It is very special.

If you can stay here, grab it

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful, historic house updated beautifully, generously provisioned, and tastefully furnished for your comfort, convenience, and enjoyment. We have rented many different properties in different parts of the U.S. and Italy and this experience sets a new standard. We were five adults. so each couple and the single had their own bedroom. We walked all over the city from this more or less central location. Loved visiting five other historic houses and Fort Sumter. We really felt like the personal guests of the homeowner, who trusted us with his books and possessions. Pam was great, welcoming and knowledgeable.
