Far Tortuga is located mid-island in the small community known as First Bight on the south side of Roatan approximately 20 minutes from the airport and 10-15 minutes from shopping and restaurants in French Harbour. It is a secluded, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, oceanfront home, sleeps 7 in the bedrooms and up to 2 on the sofa bed in the great room.
The house, finished in 1994, features a modern, granite countertop, fully-equipped kitchen with all conveniences: gas cook top, wall oven, disposal, dishwasher, microwave, coffee-grinder and coffee-maker, toaster oven, food processor, blender, etc. The tiled great room, which encompasses the living room, kitchen, and dining area, is large and airy and feels even more spacious because of the stunning vaulted wood cupola ceiling and the massive wood French doors that line the sides of the room facing the ocean. These doors all open to catch the ocean breezes and beckon to visitors to barbeque on the gas grill or just relax and watch the sunset from the over 2000 square feet of decks and gazebos that wrap-around the exterior of the house. The Infinity pool overlooks the ocean and the stone patios and benches surrounding it are perfect for sunbathing. The living room contains an entertainment center complete with DVD player and cable TV (bring your favorite DVDs or rent them on island). We also have an iPod player. Wireless internet is included as well so bring your laptop or other device. We provide two cell phones to use during your stay.
All three bedrooms possess vaulted ceilings, island style louvered windows, ceiling and floor fans, hardwood floors, and the two largest bedrooms open via French doors onto their own ocean view decks. Please note that this property is not air-conditioned. The master bedroom is very privately situated in its own wing and includes a queen bed with a walk-in closet, a huge master bathroom with his and hers vanity sinks and a walk-in shower. The other two bedrooms share a full bath with tub/shower on the opposite side of the house. One room contains a bunk bed and an extra long twin and the other bedroom has a queen bed and another huge walk-in closet. There is a very comfortable sofabed in the living room.
On the lower level of the home there are two separate garages, one of which houses a large washer and dryer for guest use. There is ample space for parking vehicles.
The turquoise waters of the Caribbean are literally steps away from the house across the Ironshore. In addition, there is always easy access through the community dock a short walk away in First Bight. A two person kayak and 2 single kayaks are also available for your pleasure.
Some of the best wall diving on Roatan is right in front of this house and the snorkeling is also excellent. The reef in front of the house drops from a depth of 12 to 70+ feet a short surface swim from the shore. Three named dive sites (Chimneys, Ironshore and First Bight Wall) commonly frequented by dive operators by boat are accessible from the First Bight dock. Beyond the named sites with buoys, the shore consists of a near continuous wall providing endless diving options. Many of our guests comment that the diving in front of the house is on par or even better than the boat diving they do during their vacation. Tanks and weights (plus any other equipment) can be easily obtained from Subway Watersports, a short 15 min drive away. Staying at Far Tortuga gives you access to these sites at a fraction of the cost of boat diving. The house is located equidistance between dive operators on the south and north shores of the island, making a vast array of diving options available.
For less adventurous guests, we suggest lazing in the pool or on the covered porches watching for dolphins or enjoying the many hummingbirds that visit the feeders and hibiscus blooms surrounding the decks. Other wildlife to watch for include: hermit crabs, land crabs, geckos, iguanas, and the lizards known on the island as 'Monkey La-las'. These lizards are quite tame and enjoy offerings of tropical fruit.
On arrival at Roatan Airport Kevin and Claire, our Property Managers, will be on hand to help you with picking up your rental vehicle (which we highly recommend in order for you to make the most of your stay) and then escort you to the house.
First night snacks and first morning breakfast items will be provided along with a bottle of chilled white wine for your enjoyment!
Kevin and Claire will be on hand throughout your stay to provide advice and assistance so that your vacation will be hassle free and will be easy to contact on the cell phone that is available for your use whilst on the island.
Come stay at Far Tortuga - we know that you'll be glad you did!
Keywords: Vacation Home
We bought this property because we were looking for a vacation home with access to diving and snorkeling.
We love the fact that the reef is literally a few steps away from this house. It is so easy to rent tanks and hop in the water.
It's an island...nothing ever goes as planned, things move a little slower...however even in the midst of this, we found comfort in the consistent service of our house managers! The home itself was clean and well appointed, not only did it meet our expectations based on the photos and descriptions, it exceeded them in many ways.
Accessing the house may require a 4 wheel drive vehicle. We had a rental van, which made the trip, however in the future we would rent a truck.
Our vacation was perfect. We were able to dive, snorkel and fish while enjoying the beautiful house. Spent a lot of time in pool. Sleeping was uncomfortable at times because there is no AC but lots of fans are provided which made it better. Definitely rent a car and explore the island, it's beautiful. Kevin, Clair and Desiree were the perfect hosts and could answer all questions and provide any assistance needed (including getting a key after locking ourselves out!). Thank you for a lovely experience.
We spent 14 wonderful days at Far Tortuga. We were met at the airport by Clair, Kevin and Desiree who stayed behind the scenes looking after us throughout our stay. The house was perfect for our family as my brother and his wife, and our family had separate and private sleeping areas but could spend most of our time in the large, spacious living area overlooking the sea. The kitchen was fully equipped and we were able to make fabulous dinners with local seafood and fruits. The area and people around the house are warm and friendly and we always had a sense of safety. Snorkeling is available right outside the house or, for those less inclined to face the open ocean (like me), there is a beautiful calm bay to loll around on on the other side of the house. This is the perfect house for those who want a base from which to explore the island and who want to stay off the tourist/resort route.
We just returned from a 12 day stay at Far Tortuga. We have stayed many places in the Caribbean and this house ranks at the top of our list. Right from the arrival when we were met at the airport by Kevin, Claire and Desiree made us feel welcomed. We rented a 4x4 truck and Claire coordinated everything so that it was waiting upon arrival. Desiree was great showing us the local grocery store and then taking us to the house. The pictures do not this place justice, it is beautiful. It is exactly as stated and has a great vibe to it. Desiree gave great recommendations for dining out and some activities. The kitchen is well stocked with all that you would need. The weather was great and snorkeling is fantastic right out in front and off the dock. It was hard for us to leave the house to explore because it is so relaxing. It is off the beaten path and this makes for quiet stay. Thanks for sharing this house.
I can only mirror all of the comments in previous reviews. House is exactly as advertised and is incredible. The shore diving right in front of the house was on awesome and on par or superior with the boat dives we did. We rented tanks from Subway Watersports and dove in front of the house pretty much every day. Divers, this is the place for you!
Our stay unfortunately fell on two weeks of very wet weather, it rained significantly pretty much every day we were there. The week before we arrived the island received 18 inches of rain in one week. As a result of all the rain, the bugs were unbelievable. Not unique to this house, it was a very common comment at the airport as we were leaving. This level or rain is abnormal as were the level of bugs so don't be deterred. But if it has been wet on the island before your stay, bring repellent!
This house is simply perfect! I am so glad the owners share their little slice of paradise! It is perfectly situated in the middle of the island of Roatan with a grocery store nearby to prepare great meals in the awesome kitchen with views that don’t quit. There are also great restaurants nearby if you don’t feel like cooking. The buoy out front is a dive spot for the island businesses that you get to enjoy at your leisure. We snorkeled twice a day from the dock and were amazed by the beauty. The property is managed by a superb local company, Blue Reef, who are at your disposal for anything you may need. If you are looking for peace and quiet and a vacation you’ll never forget, choose Far Tortuga. Prepare yourself to never want to leave!!
