Property description

Relax and get reinvigorated at this enchanting oceanfront eco-cottage with dock and moorage. Excellent crabbing, kayaking, hiking, whale watching (Orcas) and birdwatching. Restaurants, wine store, bakery, etc. nearby. Surrounded by everything a nature lover and adventurer could hope for, the surroundings are resplendent with a vast and lush beauty. Your privacy is assured as the cabin is the only home on this 3.5 acre property which you will have to yourself. But don't imagine it. Come can enjoy it!

Kayaking in the Gulf Islands : KINGFISHER COVE IS IDEALLY LOCATED FOR KAYAKING AND WHALEWATCHING AS WELL AS BIRDWATCHING, SAILING, BOATING AND MORE. During mid March the hummingbirds arrive from Mexico and entertain their worshiping audience with their skydiving talents as they soar in less than seconds to the top of the giant Douglas fir trees and dive even faster down to sea level, another 50 feet below the deck off the main level of the cottage. Faster than you can blink, they are back at the feeder with their beak inserted, drinking the treats we have left for them. Who wants to watch TV when this show is available? Rent a kayak nearby or bring one with you, leave it on the dock and paddle whenever you wish to many locations including out into Boundary Pass, only 20 minutes paddling from the dock, to the location where the Orca are most frequently sighted. Or, take a guided tour with someone who knows the local waters. Canoes are also available for rent nearby or bring one with you from Vancouver, Victoria, or from Sidney.

SKYWATCHING FROM KINGFISHER COVE: The night skies from the decks are amazing -- meteorites showers, brilliant constellations, and very little light contamination. Astronomers have sought us out, specifically for the quality of our night sky.

Crabbing off the Dock! : Catch fresh crab off the dock. Oysters also available nearby or go fishing in the waters just outside the harbour for salmon, etc.

The fish boats also sell fresh fish at Hope Bay on North Pender Island.

There is an excellent farmer's market on Saturdays, so you can add the best of island produce to your menu planning for meals on the deck over the sea.

Oceanfront property in Canada's beautiful Southern Gulf Islands between Vancouver & Victoria, also easily accessed from Seattle. The Gulf Islands are located in the Strait of Georgia, just northwest of Washington's mainland & the San Juan Islands, including Orcas, Stuart, & San Juan Islands. Also very nearby are Sidney and Vancouver Island, the Saanich Peninsula & the other Gulf Islands - Galiano Island, Mayne Island & Saltspring Island. Pender Island is famed for its sailing, fishing, kayaking, whale watching, cycling, mountain biking, bird watching, hiking, swimming, boating, farmer's markets and other rural activities such as horse riding, artist's studios & more. We are ideally located only 10 kilometers from the ferry terminal at Otter Bay. Only 4 kilometers to shops, fitness centers, gift stores, restaurants, bakeries, wine & beer stores & other shopping. Mt. Norman Park entrance is very nearby & our property & the marine park share a boundary.

Other Activities: Whale watching, Birdwatching, Frisbee Golf, Kayaking, Boating, Sky watching, Exploring Artists Studios, Farmer's Market, or just hang out on the property and sky watch. The night sky is amazing with great views of the stars, meteorite showers, etc. Our place was hand selected by astronomers as a superb place when Haly Bop was doing its thing! They returned again as they loved it so much! Our property is frequented by eagles, kingfishers, loons, cormorants, and many other sea and land birds. Time in the hammock is well spent if you like to watch for wildlife and birds. However, Pender Island does not have any bear, nor any skunks or squirrels. We do have lots of deer, mink, seal, otter and more. This property is forested and quite large, and as it borders the National Park Reserve, everything you would expect to find in terms of wildlife and birds, in the park, is also possible on our property.

Golf: North Pender Island, immediately across a little bridge that joins North and South Pender, has an excellent golf course.

Ski: Mount Washington on Vancouver Island or Whistler on the mainland are both a day trip away, so stay at Kingfisher Cove between visits to both ski hills! A winter stay on Pender is wonderful. Build a fire, cozy up with a book, or have a hot bath in the antique soaker tub on the lower deck (outside), or a hot shower in the main bathroom.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1994

Why the Owner Chose Pender Island, BC, Canada:
We looked carefully for 8 years before selecting this Gulf Island property... and we made the right choice, purchasing it in 1994. We liked the sunny exposure of the property and the guarantee that it would always be very private given that it is the last property on the road and it is almost surrounded by parkland. We wanted to preserve the view of the property from the water and not do things like string electrical wires, so we originally had only solar power and wind, and eventually connected to the grid, burying the cables and wires, a major job as it meant a 350 foot driveway had to be spanned. As Pender Island has no landfill, we chose, and continue to prefer, to keep things simple, private and quiet. It is intended to be an escape from electronics and a quiet place to 'be' and/or to reconnect with family or friends. There is no TV and we don't want one. There is a radio, and anyone can connect their laptop to the internet can, by tethering onto their cell phone but we do not have wifi. There are lots of places on Pender with free wifi for those who feel compelled.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
This is a place to relax, rejuvenate and share intimate time with others. The hammocks, the tub, the wildlife, the decks and the dock, the marine park next door, at the amazing night sky, all make for a real retreat, away from the crowds and chaos of city life. Pender Island is also a very neighbourly community. With extremely rare exception, everyone will be welcoming and helpful, and there are many things to do. The hikes are superb, especially to the marine park next door or to the top of Mount Norman where there are majestic views of the other Gulf Islands, the 'big' island (Vancouver Island), the San Juan Islands in the U.S.A. and the mountains of the Olympic Peninsula. Whale watching is great from Gowland Point and Brooks Point at the south end of Pender Island. North and South Pender Island are joined by a small bridge, and under the bridge is a First Nations Midden that is very interesting. The farmer's market operates from early summer to late fall and is a great place to explore the local handicrafts and to purchase fresh vegetables and other goodies. The Nu-to-Yu (a thrift store that has managed to fund things like scholarships for local school children and the volunteer coast guard, etc.) is a great source for recycled gems of all kinds, and it is a very entertaining place to visit as well. The local library is entirely operated by volunteers and has computers and internet access.
