Beautiful 10 foot cedar tongue and groove ceilings through-out the cottage. Large windows in every room allow for beautiful rainforest views. Sit outside with a cup of Kona coffee on our beautiful lanai and listen to song birds welcome you here. This house is located 1.5 miles from the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You are a step away from the many wonders it has to offer. View Lava flowing into the sea! A chance in a life time! Hike through the calderas and explore lava tubes and so much more.

Take our Kayaks to Hilo bay and explore coconut island. There is a nice golf course within 5 miles from the cottage. No need for golf clubs, Hale Mauka has a set. The bicycles here are yours to ride through the neighborhood and to the nearby Volcano village. We have two adult bike cruisers and two young children's bikes. Volcano Village is an artist community and there are art galleries to explore. On Sunday, the Farmers Market near the cottage is a fun place to check out. You can pick up fresh grown veggies for your stay. The town of Hilo has a wonderful "Must see Farmers Market" on Saturdays.

You will love cooking in this fully equipped kitchen! The cottage is set up on a whole house water filter system.

There are restaurants in the Village that offer everything from fine dining to cafe's with local fish and chips or a great hamburger. Eagles Lighthouse Cafe offers great sandwiches with homemade breads. In the National Park "Volcano House" offers tables with views of the caldera of Kilauea below. (make a reservation early for that window seating)

Hale Mauka has it all! masks and snorkels, fins and boggie boards to use to see the wonders of life under the sea. Richardson beach in Hilo has a great beach for laying around on the sand and swimming with turtles. The famous Black Sands Beach is only 20 minutes away from Hale Mauka where 9 out of 10 times you will see turtles. You might want to drive to the top of Mauna Kea (4-wheel drive required) to an elevation of almost 14,000 feet or check out Mauna Loa. They both have observatories, what a view! We are centrally located to see it all!!

Come home to soak and relax with a glass of wine in the 100 gallon Japanese style soaking tub while gazing out into your own private Rainforest. This bathroom offers a separate shower also.

Did I mention, A king size Tempur-Pedic mattress that will lull you away for the best sleep ever.

About Diana Varney

In 2004 we retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest, in the town of Volcano. We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other homes from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. When we were building and creating Hale Mauka we focused on every detail. We made sure the deep soaking tub had a huge window for that rainforest view. The bedrooms have large windows to bring in the beauty of the rainforest. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our second home with guest from around the world! We Welcome you to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona, so we are just moments away if you need help with anything.

Diana Varney purchased this house in 2004

Truly like staying at a good friend's lovely home

  • 5 of 5

I love staying in rentals because I enjoy cooking with local ingredients and I hate having to get dressed up to go to breakfast, so we've rented quite a few places over the years and this is the first time I truly felt like I could be staying at a friend's house. Diana and Rob have created a beautiful home away from home with a wonderful sense of place. I think others have said this and I want to reiterate--the photos do not do it justice. It is open and airy and just feels great. I greatly appreciate it when hosts trust me with good cookware :). The tub is like a little slice of heaven--deep and relaxing and you feel like you're in the jungle. Diana was kind enough to call in the morning to make sure a question I'd asked had been answered (it had) and I had to admit we were still lingering on her wonderful porch drinking coffee--even the volcano wasn't quite enough to get us to budge yet. Still, we managed to see so much from this perfect location--we hiked around the caldera during the day and down to the lava flow at sunset. And we found everything we needed for our outings at the house--flashlights, a backpack, even warm sweatshirts. We didn't get to take advantage of the kayaks, but they left really helpful tips on where to go and how to transport the kayaks--so next time. Mahalo, mahalo.

W.O.W.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Hale Mauka for 3 nights in early July with our three school-aged kids and had a wonderful time. It is a solid, SPOTLESS, well-appointed and well-stocked home. Diana has made it very easy and stress-free for guests by providing spices, oil, coffee, cereal, bath wash and shampoo, etc. There is also everything you might need for a drive to the beach. Our time in Volcano was spent entirely in the park, leaving in the morning and coming back after sunset, so we couldn't enjoy the porch or garden as much as we wanted. It is lush and private. We had plenty of room for the five of us to unwind and relax. We would definitely stay here again. Amazing!

Great location. Perfect house!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I loved our 4 night stay at this beautiful house in the rain forest of Volcano Village. The house is extremely well stocked with just about anything you need: spices, cereals, all kinds of cooking gear, toiletries, towels, beach gear, movies, games, even kayaks!

Don't just do a day trip to Volcanoes National Park from Kona. Its definitely worth staying on this side of the island for a few days. We did several hikes in the park, went to where the lava was flowing into the ocean, hiked across the lava fields and got up close and felt the heat of the flowing lava (with a local guide), viewed the glowing crater at night, and checked out many sites to the north and south of Hilo as well.

Big Island is big. Don't waste your time driving around like crazy, which is what you'll do if you stay in Kona the whole time and want to see the sights on the Hilo side.

After a long day of sightseeing, it was great coming back to the house and relaxing on the porch listening to the sounds of the rain forest with a hot tea and then soaking in the giant tub! Hopefully we will return to the Big Island and we will definitely stay here again. Mahalo!

Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

LOVE LOVE LOVE This was our second visit and I hope it will be annually!)

Well designed and everything provided that you may need. Super relaxing, a perfect destination for both adventure ( hiking around volcano park) and chillin with a book and coffee on the incredible porch or huge sunk in bathtub with plate glass of lush green rainforest. This is the perfect getaway of peace and tranquility. Perfect to start or end your vacation here--or for whole thing. Lots to do on this side of the island.
