"Volcano Hale Mauka" COME SEE THE LAVA!!

Is your own private (non-smoking) Hawaiian Plantation style rain forest cottage nestled within the giant Ohia and ancient Hapu'u fern trees. Beautiful 10 foot cedar tongue and groove ceilings through-out the cottage. Large windows in every room allow for beautiful rainforest views. Sit outside with a cup of Kona coffee on our beautiful lanai and listen to song birds welcome you here. This house is located 1.5 miles from the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You are a step away from the many wonders it has to offer. View Lava flowing into the sea! A chance in a life time! Hike through the calderas and explore lava tubes and so much more.

Take our Kayaks to Hilo bay and explore coconut island. There is a nice golf course within 5 miles from the cottage. No need for golf clubs, Hale Mauka has a set. The bicycles here are yours to ride through the neighborhood and to the nearby Volcano village. We have two adult bike cruisers and two young children's bikes. Volcano Village is an artist community and there are art galleries to explore. On Sunday, the Farmers Market near the cottage is a fun place to check out. You can pick up fresh grown veggies for your stay. The town of Hilo has a wonderful "Must see Farmers Market" on Saturdays.

You will love cooking in this fully equipped kitchen! The cottage is set up on a whole house water filter system.

There are restaurants in the Village that offer everything from fine dining to cafe's with local fish and chips or a great hamburger. Eagles Lighthouse Cafe offers great sandwiches with homemade breads. In the National Park "Volcano House" offers tables with views of the caldera of Kilauea below. (make a reservation early for that window seating)

Hale Mauka has it all! masks and snorkels, fins and boggie boards to use to see the wonders of life under the sea. Richardson beach in Hilo has a great beach for laying around on the sand and swimming with turtles. The famous Black Sands Beach is only 20 minutes away from Hale Mauka where 9 out of 10 times you will see turtles. You might want to drive to the top of Mauna Kea (4-wheel drive required) to an elevation of almost 14,000 feet or check out Mauna Loa. They both have observatories, what a view! We are centrally located to see it all!!

Come home to soak and relax with a glass of wine in the 100 gallon Japanese style soaking tub while gazing out into your own private Rainforest. This bathroom offers a separate shower also.

Did I mention, A king size Tempur-Pedic mattress that will lull you away for the best sleep ever.

There is so much to do on the Big Island! Your stay here at "Volcano Hale Mauka" has it all for a wonderful adventure on the Big Island.

It's your own private cottage in the rain forest! We give you the privacy you deserve but we are always available to help and answer your questions. Come to Volcano Hale Mauka and ENJOY!! Everything in and at Hale Mauka is top of the line..

About Diana Varney

In 2004 we retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest, in the town of Volcano. We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other homes from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. When we were building and creating Hale Mauka we focused on every detail. We made sure the deep soaking tub had a huge window for that rainforest view. The bedrooms have large windows to bring in the beauty of the rainforest. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our second home with guest from around the world! We Welcome you to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona, so we are just moments away if you need help with anything.

Diana Varney purchased this house in 2004

Excellent Property - Excellent Stay

  • 5 of 5

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We had a fabulous time in Volcano and staying at Hale Mauka. We stayed for 3 nights and used the hale as a base to visit Volcano National Park and the surrounding areas. It was fabulous. Diana was very responsive leading up to our trip, and when we arrived, we found the place spotless and feeling like home. The Varney's had all the amenities you would need, like shampoos and soaps, etc., so we could focus on our vacation and not have to worry about finding these items at a local store. While there, we explored the park, went to the Green Sand Beach (a must if you visit), and also the Black Sand Beach. The house comes "fully stocked" with all the beach items you need - snorkels, masks, etc - but we did not use them (yet it was nice knowing we could!) The highlight of our stay was going to Kalapana where we hiked at dusk the lava fields for over an hour to find flowing lava. Nature at it's best! Absolutely amazing. My 9 year old even managed it. :) Coming back late to a very welcoming home was the perfect ending to an amazing day of exploring. So thank you to the Varney's for letting us stay in your home. We hope to visit again soon! Mahalo!

Beautiful home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent 4 days at Diana's home in Volcano. Our experience couldn't have been better! The home is quiet, clean, beautiful and well stocked. It is nestled in a beautiful forest of tree ferns and flowering trees. Comfortable beds and well furnished. A romantic retreat for our 25th anniversary. Mahalo Diana!

Beautiful house and grounds

  • 5 of 5

We only stayed one night (one of the few houses that allows this), but found the house very well appointed and the grounds very peaceful. Its a short way from "downtown" volcano.

W.O.W.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Hale Mauka for 3 nights in early July with our three school-aged kids and had a wonderful time. It is a solid, SPOTLESS, well-appointed and well-stocked home. Diana has made it very easy and stress-free for guests by providing spices, oil, coffee, cereal, bath wash and shampoo, etc. There is also everything you might need for a drive to the beach. Our time in Volcano was spent entirely in the park, leaving in the morning and coming back after sunset, so we couldn't enjoy the porch or garden as much as we wanted. It is lush and private. We had plenty of room for the five of us to unwind and relax. We would definitely stay here again. Amazing!
