Beautiful 10 foot cedar tongue and groove ceilings through-out the cottage. Large windows in every room allow for beautiful rainforest views. Sit outside with a cup of Kona coffee on our beautiful lanai and listen to song birds welcome you here. This house is located 1.5 miles from the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You are a step away from the many wonders it has to offer. View Lava flowing into the sea! A chance in a life time! Hike through the calderas and explore lava tubes and so much more.

Take our Kayaks to Hilo bay and explore coconut island. There is a nice golf course within 5 miles from the cottage. No need for golf clubs, Hale Mauka has a set. The bicycles here are yours to ride through the neighborhood and to the nearby Volcano village. We have two adult bike cruisers and two young children's bikes. Volcano Village is an artist community and there are art galleries to explore. On Sunday, the Farmers Market near the cottage is a fun place to check out. You can pick up fresh grown veggies for your stay. The town of Hilo has a wonderful "Must see Farmers Market" on Saturdays.

You will love cooking in this fully equipped kitchen! The cottage is set up on a whole house water filter system.

There are restaurants in the Village that offer everything from fine dining to cafe's with local fish and chips or a great hamburger. Eagles Lighthouse Cafe offers great sandwiches with homemade breads. In the National Park "Volcano House" offers tables with views of the caldera of Kilauea below. (make a reservation early for that window seating)

Hale Mauka has it all! masks and snorkels, fins and boggie boards to use to see the wonders of life under the sea. Richardson beach in Hilo has a great beach for laying around on the sand and swimming with turtles. The famous Black Sands Beach is only 20 minutes away from Hale Mauka where 9 out of 10 times you will see turtles. You might want to drive to the top of Mauna Kea (4-wheel drive required) to an elevation of almost 14,000 feet or check out Mauna Loa. They both have observatories, what a view! We are centrally located to see it all!!

Come home to soak and relax with a glass of wine in the 100 gallon Japanese style soaking tub while gazing out into your own private Rainforest. This bathroom offers a separate shower also.

Did I mention, A king size Tempur-Pedic mattress that will lull you away for the best sleep ever.

Quaint Jungle cottage

  • 5 of 5

This house was fantastic. It was perfect for our family of four while we were touring Volcanos National Park and Hilo Area. It is perfectly clean and has everything you could ever need. These owners clearly know what they are doing! We had zero trouble with booking or any part of our stay. We had such a nice relaxing time we wish we had stayed one extra day just to feel at home in this adorable jungle cottage.

Beautiful home just 2.5 miles from the Park

  • 5 of 5

2 BR, with on-Site washer/dryer. There is 1.5 bath and a roomy kitchen. The feeling is that of a home and not just a place to stay. It is in a cozy clearing away from the street. For those interested there is a deep bath tub that would be great for relaxing and soaking. We would put this on the top of our list for a return to Hawaii VRBO.

Spacious, quaint cottage full of character with all amenities in tropical setting next to volcanoes

  • 5 of 5

Although it rained, and the government shut down the National Park—we couldn’t have asked for a more comfortable stay. Lots of things to do in the area and in the cottage. Our kids loved the games and it was refreshing to get to prepare our own food on the grill instead of more restaurants. Highly recommend!!

Great House in a Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

We spent most of our vacation visiting family on the Kona side of the island, however we always like to spend a couple of nights on the Hilo side. In the past we have stayed on the Hamakua Coast north of Hilo. This was such a better location as Volcano National Park is one of our favorite places to visit. In fact it was perfect. We loved the rainforest and that it was just outside the park. The house was clean, comfortable and supplied with everything you would ever need. We made several visits to the park and also went to the Hilo Farmers Market, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens and Akaka and Rainbow Falls. We would love to return and would highly recommend staying here. Mahalo!

Wonderful place and location

  • 5 of 5

My family really enjoyed the house, beds, and all the little things available throughout (microwave popcorn, sweatshirt to borrow for viewing volcano at night when it gets way colder than you think it will). It was the perfect location -- just a few minutes to the national park. A highlight for me was the Sunday farmers market (about a mile away) from 6:30am-10:00am. Yummy (and cheap!) prepared food and some great produce. We wished we had stayed one night (three instead of two) to get everything we wanted in.

Owner's Response: Ellen, Thank you for staying with us! Being able to visit the park at night is so awesome and we are just around the corner! Next time stay for 3 nights. There is so much to do in and around the Volcano area. We also love the Sunday Farmers Market! They have wonderful homemade foods from around the world. Fresh, Fresh Fresh!! Aloha Diana

Very nice house in great location

  • 5 of 5

Nice plantation style house that has a lot of character. Comfortable, clean home with nice amenities, including fully equipped kitchen with nice dishware and kitchen utensils. Everything you would need is available. Located in a quiet neighborhood and conveniently located less than 10 minutes from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. With its proximity to the park, one of our highlights was a nightly visit to see the lava lake in Halema'uma'u Crater and were able to avoid the crowds by going after 8 pm. It was a slightly different experience each night.

About Diana Varney

In 2004 Rob and I retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest, in the town of Volcano. Our grandchildren love coming to visit, and so will yours! We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other homes from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. When we were building and creating Hale Mauka we focused on every detail. We made sure the deep soaking tub had a huge window for that rainforest view. The bedrooms have large windows to bring in the beauty of the rainforest. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our second home with guest from around the world! We Welcome you to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona, so we are just moments away if you need help with anything.

Diana Varney purchased this house in 2004
